How to Remove Vinyl from Walls and Doors

IMG_2515Remember for awhile there, when everyone was putting big, long sayings on their walls?  Bible verses and cute phrases like “Always Kiss Me Goodnight,” and “Happily Ever After?”  I had one on my kids’ bathroom wall reminding them to Brush, Rinse, Flush, Floss, and a few other things–now THAT was useful!  Anyway, I think there’s still a place for vinyl in the home, and trust me, I use lots of it still (there’s an enormous three-initial monogram on the wall above my bed, for example), but if you’re wanting to take your vinyl down in some areas to keep your decor cutting-edge :) , then you may be wondering if it’s really as removable as we were promised that it is!

I’ve been waiting for warm enough weather to paint our front door.  Our house is on the rental market, as most of you guys know, and an immaculate front entry is key to curb appeal.  First step, though, was to remove my cute vinyl house numbers from the door:

Sadly, vinyl is removable, but not reusable, so don’t think you’re going to be able to move it somewhere else or put it back up later.

Using a hair dryer set to medium heat, warm the edge of the vinyl until a plastic spatula or putty knife can lift up the edge.  If you don’t have a putty knife, maybe a credit card, or even a razor blade?  Be careful that you don’t scratch the wall with the razor blade, though!

Use a hair dryer to warm the vinyl

Working SLOWLY, peel the vinyl away.  If it starts to resist, just shoot it with the hair dryer!  Be patient and remember that it’s better to go slowly than to have to spackle a wall!

I was favorably impressed with how my door looked when the vinyl was off.  You can barely see the outline of the numbers on the right side of the door, but after I wiped it down, I realized that was dirt and/or pollen, and not adhesive residue.  I had planned to lightly sand any glue away before I painted, but it wasn’t necessary.

Door after vinyl is removed.

I forgot to snap a picture of the door after I painted and before I reapplied the vinyl, but it looked perfect.  I could easily have left the door vinyl-free, and no trace would have remained.  But, since I loved those door numbers, I cut a new set and reapplied them.  Just a side note; the font is different.  I bought the original set before I got my vinyl cutter and while I like the original font better, this one is just fine for now!

The bottom line is that the vinyl held up perfectly for almost two years, and then was easily removed without leaving a trace behind.   And while removal was slow and steady, it was also easy.  Two thumbs up!

Vinyl House Number Giveaway (because you asked for it!)

Good morning!  A few weeks ago, I took an unscientific poll on Facebook:  would you like me to do a giveaway of vinyl house numbers, similar to what I have on my front door?  The answer was pretty overwhelming, and of course it was YES!

Giveaway--vinyl house numbers from 11 Magnolia Lane

Mine have been on my door for almost two years and look great still.  If you change your mind, warming the vinyl with a hair dryer before slowly peeling it off works really well.  I’ll probably have to take mine off to paint the front door (when it warms up!), but then I’ll put another set on–I get so many compliments on them!

They look good at Thanksgiving:

And at Christmas:

In the autumn:

Fall front door at 11 Magnolia LaneReally any time of the year!

The porch decor may change with the seasons, but the numbers stay the same!

Here are the details of the giveaway:  it will run until Monday, March 11th, at noon central time.  If you win, I’ll make you a set of custom house numbers in white or black, similar to the style on my door (don’t stress me out by asking for fancy scrolly cursive or stuff like that–mkay?  I’m strictly an amateur here!).  I’ll have you measure to make sure they’re just the right size for your door.  I might ask you to email us a picture when you put them up, so we can see how cute they are!

You can enter up to four times, by leaving up to four comments below.  Leave a comment if  you:

  • are an email subscriber (or sign up to be one–see the box at the right)
  • follow us on Facebook (box on right or below)
  • follow us on Pinterest or Twitter (box on right or below)
  • share the giveaway by pinning it, tweeting it, or sharing it on Facebook or your blog

That’s it–easy!  Good luck to all of you, and thanks for stopping by!

Changing Up My Dining Room Chargers

Gold chargers ready for their makeover!!

Do you have a space in your home that you are avoiding due to a decorating dilemma?  Maybe you’re even feeling overwhelmed with the idea of trying to change it up?  I feel that way with my dining room.   When we moved here 5 years ago I had so much red decor.  Red drapes, red sofas, cherry floors, red pots …. red everything!!  As time has passed and we had a major flood that caused us to need a lot of repairs, I am moving on from my love of red in a very different direction.

My red and gold dining room in need of a mini makeover!

After flooding my entire main level and changing out our cherry hardwood floors to an ebony beech, I have been trying to change up my decor one room at a time.  I am drawn to the simplicity of classic black and white but have had a difficult time moving past all my existing decor. How do I change up my style without spending a fortune?

Some much needed inspiration as I change up my decorating style!! TheEntertainingHouse.com

I have been trying to come up with creative and inexpensive ways to change up my current style without getting overwhelmed.  One tip I can offer is to take it one small project or one room at a time.   Amy helped me jump-start this process in my dining room as she generously handed down some beautiful black and white houndstooth drapes she no longer needed.  They were actually hung in the model home for my neighborhood at one point so they were the perfect fit and a much better color selection than what I had originally chosen.   They were also FREE (thank you Amy!)

Gold chargers made the dining room look and feel a bit too formal but check out those houndstooth drapes!!

Another problem I have in my dining room is that I have gold accent overload.  I love gold and I think you can add bits and pieces of gold to every room but too much of anything is never a good thing.  I had gold chargers, gold mirrors, gold flatware (which I still love) and gold platters.  I needed to update the gold to something a bit more casual and hopefully brighten up the space at the same time.

Loving the black and white!

With new black and white drapes hanging, I decided to change up my gold chargers.  I already had the white spray paint so that was an easy and very inexpensive way to solve my red and gold decorating dilemma.

Vinyl # decals courtesy of Christy!!

Christy graciously offered to cut out some vinyl numbers for me with her awesome Silhouette cutter.  How lucky I am to have two very generous and creative women in my life!  Not only are they providing two key elements for my dining room up-date, they inspire me daily with all their decorating know-how.  I am excited to see my dining room transform, even if it is one piece at a time, and I am looking forward to entertaining in my new casual, yet classic, black and white dining room.

My dining room mini makeover is looking better and brighter in black & white

Happy Decorating!

Thrift Store Letter Organizer and Mildred & Mable’s Giveaway Winner!

Hey guys–sorry for the delay in posting the winner of the Mildred & Mable’s giveaway–Chris and I spent the weekend creating faux built in bookshelves in the master bathroom from an Ikea Billy bookcase (reveal coming soon, but of course I screwed up the coping on the crown molding and have to buy another piece before it’s all done and I can show the “after”).

Drumroll, please….Amy at A New Old House (comment #1), you are the winner of the Tokyo Milk hand cream and gorgeous ruby red ring!  I sent you an email, so please reply with your address and I’ll ship that out to you ASAP.  Can’t wait to hear what you think of it.  And many thanks, once again, to Andrea at Mildred & Mable’s in Clarksville, TN, for providing the awesome goodies.  We have another giveaway coming soon (enamel house numbers) so stay tuned!

And, because I don’t want to leave you without a little eye candy, here’s the cutest little letter organizer (or bill organizer, although that’s not as fun) that I found at Goodwill for $1.49.  I added black vinyl numbers using my new Silhouette Cameo and I love how it turned out.  It’s going to go in my master bedroom sitting area–I’m planning to carve out a tiny desk area.

Thanks for stopping by!
