Dining Room Makeover {BM Revere Pewter Paint}

It’s been 5 years in the making but every room on the main level of my house is finally painted- YAHOO!!!  This is such a huge victory for me as I really hate painting.  Well, that may not be entirely true as what I really hate is the prepping and taping.  I know there are million gadgets out there that tell you that you don’t need to tape if you buy their products.  Unfortunately that just doesn’t apply to me and my “get it done” personality.  I am a born ‘rusher’,  I start a project and I want it done as soon as I begin.  This is not the best personality to have when it comes to DIY home improvement projects and that is why I must tape prior to painting:)

I hate taping but it is a necessity for my “get-it-done” personality!

My dining room is prepped and ready for some color!

Another reason it has taken me so long to paint my house is because I am afraid to commit.  I have a huge fear over picking the wrong paint color.  I am so thankful for my girlfriends as they have an amazing eye for color and help point me in the right direction.   This time around, I painted outside of my beige comfort zone and tried a cooler shade of grey.  Revere Pewter is an amazing Benjamin Moore color with a tiny hit of beige so it was the perfect compromise for me.  It ties perfectly into the rest of my home and as you can see below, it works well with the Grant Beige painted in my formal living room which is right next door.

Adding some color to my dinning room inspired me to move some things around.  Remember that mirror I had hanging above my buffet?  I have since painted that with chalk paint and shifted it over to another wall.  My husband and I placed an open white shelf where the mirror used to hang.  I am sure this looks very familiar as Amy and Christy both have this exact shelf hanging in their home,  I guess I felt left out and had to have one for myself!  Doesn’t it look so much better?

Here is the mirror before the chalk board makeover- sorry for the Halloween flash back!

My new and improved chalk board!!!

New paint and open shelving really changes the look of my dinning room.

I actually stenciled this jar because I wanted to create a fall “Thankful” apothecary container this past November. I tried to write down reasons to be thankful daily and I would place them inside this jar. I have kept it out because I love the burnt red color of the leaves and I feel that I still have a ton to be thankful for this Christmas. It is a terrific reminder to remain thankful during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

Lastly, here are a few shots of my holiday dinning room tablescape:

Bunched up burlap fabric creates a rustic table runner

My dollar store snowflake plates add a pop of red to my dinning room table

I love adding greenery to a table

This belonged to my beloved grandmother (aka: Nanie). She passed away last year at 103 years old. I love having bits and pieces of her memory scattered around my home especially at Christmas. This is one of my favorite holiday memories as Nanie would light the candles and it would magically spin around.

Happy Holidays!

My Black and White Halloween Tablescape

October is finally here!  My boys and I have been decorating the house all week as we all get very excited for Halloween.  My children really want to make the house as spooky as possible for Hallows Eve this year.  My oldest son Gavin has been placing spider webs around the perimeter of my house and my youngest son, Lincoln, is enamored with my Frankenstein nutcracker.  Needless to say, they are having a blast!  My focus has been the dinning room.  I wanted to create a spooky tablescape without spending a lot.   I also wanted to utilize some of my existing decor like my black and white chargers and my  polka dot table runner.  My goal was simply to add to what was already in place and incorporate some spooky fall elements.  I think I captured the essence of the holiday.  What do you think?

Happy Halloween!

Check out those burlap flags I made. I love that burlap is taking off and my local fabric store is now carrying printed burlap. Aren’t those keys adorable?

This photo will become its own post as I created that cool Halloween bottle and matching glasses. This was a fun and easy craft project and it would be the perfect hostess gift if you have any fall parties to attend.

A Winter Fondue Party

New Year’s Eve is always one of my favorite holidays and we celebrated in style this year! Christy and her family made the long trek to join us to ring in 2012, and I am kind of stealing her thunder as it was her idea (and her efforts) that brought us the delicious idea to have fondue for our celebration.

So if “fondue” brings up visions of low slung sofas and women in caftans lounging near a pot of bubbling cheese you might just be correct! Or, the quintessential After-Ski treat?

Image via Apartment Therapy

Of course, we jazzed it up a bit by donning some sequins and heels and spending the last hours of 2011 gathered around my dining room table sipping martinis and simmering some delicious beef tenderloin and ahi tuna.

There is Christy (with our friend Robyn) getting ready to power fondue!

This is a great idea for any winter gathering. Its actually very easy to prepare as the cooking is all done at the party by the guests so with a little shopping and a little chopping you are ready to go.

Christy hauled her 2 fondue pots all the way from Tennessee for our evening’s adventure. It is definitely worth it to have the electric fondue pots (which I will be searching garage sales for from now on) instead of a candle or sterno-fueled pot. This would also be a great event for a Valentine’s party or just as an excuse for a winter gathering–which I always find are much needed with the long dark days and snow school holidays that come with February!

Anyway…we had 2 pots cooking for 6 adults. Christy prepared a cheese fondue to start, with some french bread and some lightly steamed broccoli. {Note: we tried both a ready-made cheese fondue (from Trader Joe’s) and this recipe and if time permits, this recipe (below) was far superior.}

Cheese Fondue: (from All Recipes)

  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 1/2 pound shredded Swiss cheese
  • 1/2 pound shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 (1 pound) loaf French bread, cut into 1 inch cubes

Simmer wine in fondue pot. Add Swiss cheese, Gruyere cheese, 1/4 pound at a time. Stir after each addition of cheese until melted. Stir in flour. When all the cheese has melted, stir in salt and nutmeg. Serve with cut-up French bread.

For the “main” course we boiled some peanut oil (though you can use other kinds of oil or even broth to make it healthier) and dipped beef tenderloin, sirloin and some fresh tuna from the seafood market here and topped it all with a variety of sauces. We had wasabi, soy, terayaki along with sesame seeds to dip the cooked meat in available. Because the meat is cooked at a very high temperature (disclaimer: be careful!) very quickly it’s not as unhealthy as you might think being cooked in oil–and, anyway it was a special occasion right? :)  One bonus is that each guest could cook what meat they liked, to their liking.

The bonus (and best part in my opinion) was the dessert course. Using this recipe, Christy prepared bite-sized pieces of store-bought pound cake, bananas (the hands down the favorite), and marshmallows and added a side of walnuts to sprinkle on the warm chocolate-coated items for a decadent ending. Delicious!

Here is the recipe:

Chocolate Bar Fondue (from All Recipes)

  • 32 ounces milk chocolate, grated
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon instant coffee powder
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon white sugar
  • 1/3 cup hot water

In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the chocolate with the heavy cream. Mix in the instant coffee, vanilla extract, sugar, and hot water. Continue to heat, stirring frequently, until the mixture is smooth.

My contribution was my tablescape–because it was New Year’s Eve, I wanted something sparkly (OK, I always want some sparkle, I admit…) so I hit on the idea of using some extra white Christmas tree lights on top of a mirror, but hid them under some fluffy white tulle. While it looked a little “wedding” like, it mixed well with candlelight scattered on the table and made for a nice ambiance for our little celebration.

It was a great way to ring in the New Year, something fun and different and relatively easy. It could just as easy be a casual event (don’t forget your caftan!) or a dressier celebration like we had.

Have you fondue’d recently? Do you have a good recipe? Let us know in the comments if so.

A Natural Thanksgiving Tablescape–Pine Cones, Berries, and Dried Flowers

We’re hosting Thanksgiving here in Nashville this year, so I needed to come up with a quick (and informal) table before the family arrives.  My goal was to use what I have rather than buying new.  With the exception of the champagne-colored chargers (a cross between gold and silver, and therefore more versatile, IMO), I succeeded.

My best helper was in charge of making the place cards.

I didn’t use my formal china this year–just my everyday white!  I did use the good silver, the “everyday” crystal, depression glass for bread plates, salt cellars (my kids love those tiny spoons), and apothecary style spice jars for individual vases.  My decorations are all natural–pine cones, osage apples, spanish moss, berries, d’Anjou pears, and dried hydrangeas.  I gathered most of them out back, although I will admit that I carry my favorite huge pine cones around with me when we move (the movers were convinced I was crazy!).  I apologize for the pictures–we’ve had nothing but rain the last few days and there’s NO natural light to speak of.

Dried hydrangea centerpiece with scattered pinecones.

I used canvas painter’s dropcloths as tablecloths for the table and the buffet, and tied the sides up with jute twine.  My table’s extended to 12′ right now and I realized that I can’t find my super-long tablecloth–but this worked great with the color scheme, anyway.

The buffet will be a resting place for food on Turkey Day, but for now it’s holding random items.

FYI, the “B” pumpkin was on sale for 80% off at Hobby Lobby this past week, making it $5.  Score!  The “Thankful” subway art can be printed at Over the Big Moon here, and there’s a darling banner that you can print out, too (mine’s hanging above the buffet).

We’re going to enjoy a piano concert during our dessert.

More hedge apples (osage apples) from my backyard–I am obsessed!

The head of the table–see the gobble, gobble on the place card?!

Sorry about the glare from the chandy in this last picture…one day when I share the dining room I’ll have to show you the hideous fixture that was up there before I scored this Ballard Designs Grande Claire off Craigslist for $100.

All it needs now is the turkey!

We are so very thankful to God for all of His tremendous blessings.  Have a very Happy Thanksgiving with your families!

Thanksgiving Table & Give Thanks Printable

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and usually by now I would be selecting recipes and making shopping lists but this year, I am getting off easy. No, I am not going elsewhere just having a smaller celebration then usual, and keeping it simple. But, Christy has a big celebration going in Tennessee this year so I can’t wait to see what she does.

Since I am not doing the whole “do” this year, I thought I would re-post my table from last year. You can read that post HERE. Our blog was young then so most reader’s probably haven’t seen it. {Chris Neese from Celebration’s at Home actually featured my tablescape on her Facebook page on Thanksgiving, so nice of her!} And, I added a few more pictures to the mix here for those who have seen it.

I made the place cards and the “give thanks” cards to decorate the placesettings by printing on craft paper and then writing over it with a colored sharpie. I am attaching the “Give Thanks” cards as a printable at the end if you would like to make them for yourself.

Hydrangeas from my garden, I love that color they get in the fall.

Look familiar? This candleabra is always in use at one of my parties, somehow or another!

A printable sign I made, printed on Ivory cardstock then backed with brown paper and framed.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here are the “Give Thanks” cards table cards I added to the center of each placesetting. Simply print them out and use them as is, or if you use a darker paper you can write over the “Thanks” in the color you prefer.  You could also have guests write on these what they are thankful for, or make a “Thankful” Tree out of them…the ideas are endless!

Enjoy your holiday, and be sure to click to enter our giveaway for a set of green & red polkadot holiday pillows.  Aren’t they are awesome?  (GIVEAWAY CLOSED)

Oh What a Night! {Dinner Party time!}

The table, ready for dinner...

Wow…if you were wondering, the Dinner Party I had on Saturday was a great time! I am so glad I did it. I plan to do a follow-up post on just the food as I think my menu worked out perfectly and so I will share it in case anyone wants to replicate parts or all of it.

(View my post on planning the party and download a free printable HERE and view more on my tablescape HERE)

We all had a great time, and it was a ton of fun. I think we finally got up from the table at midnight! So obviously we can claim we “sat around for hours and talked and laughed over our wineglasses” (Just like those “Thirty-Somethings”!).  The best part was that we all agreed to make it a regular thing–and have already picked our hosts for next month. We may have to come in from our new home in another city but that would be worth it.

Anyway, its easy to get stressed out when entertaining, even good friends, so I did a few things that made my night so much easier and more fun for me. I had all my ingredients for dinner out and ready to go.

Getting Ready for Barefoot Contessa's Shrimp Scampi

The recipe at hand

During the Party everything was close at hand so I could quickly cook up the main course

We set up a self-service Bar, though my husband took care of most of the custom drink mixing (its kind of his “thing”).

A bar was available (with a picture of some of the guests above) and a drink menu on the side

And, most importantly! (ha ha) …I was able to relax for a few minutes before the guests arrived and have a taste of the special raspberry martini’s my husband concocted for the evening. They were delicious! (and I promise I will post the recipe with the food recipes)

Don't I look relaxed?

It did get a tiny bit hectic cooking–which took all of about 5 minutes–and only because I had to figure out how to serve everyone enough and not run out and get the food on the table while it was still hot. Luckily for me Terry’s husband took some food shots for me just as it hit the table. (Wasn’t that nice of him?)

Guests "Laughing and Talking" over Wine Glasses

All in all, it was a very fun night. In retrospect, I did the party (with guests contributing salad and a vegetable side and some wine) for less $ then a night at a fancy restaurant (with a babysitter) would have cost my husband and I. And, I enjoyed getting ready and definitely had a great time the night of.  The only drawback of the evening…

Thanksgiving Table

Its Thanksgiving (already!?!). The day before Thanksgiving is always my decorating/table setting day (with some cleaning and last minute grocery shopping thrown in!). I actually cherish the time when I can dig out my silver and even though it’s always in desperate need of a polish, I feel proud I actually use it every once in awhile.

Small Cards Saying "Give Thanks"

I just finished my table and now must run off and start thinking about the actual meal, but here is how it came out this year. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday. I hope its filled with food, family and friends!

XO,
