The Empty Nest {A wonderful new shop}

Terry and I were so excited when we heard that our ‘blog’ friend Janet from The Empty Nest was opening a store on Main Street in Warrenton, VA. We couldn’t wait to see all her beautifully painted furniture and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in action.

I was in the same area last week {working on my Mother’s Work/Craft Room} and so we made a shopping event out of visiting the store during her opening and finally got to meet Janet in person. {If you don’t know her blog, please visit her HERE.}

Terry & I with Janet at the opening of her new store, The Empty Nest

She is as uplifting and radiant as you would expect from reading The Empty Nest and her new store is filled with all sorts of beautifully redone furniture and other wonderful goodies.

She is a stockist for Annie Sloan and regularly gives workshops {I am planning another trip so I can make sure to attend the next workshop} and is a wealth of knowledge about furniture and paint.

Each piece of furniture is unique, but all are beautiful.

She also sells some fabulous finds from other small businesses like these delicious candles. I was so overwhelmed deciding among all the delicious smells, I somehow didn’t buy one, but will be loading up on my next visit.

Even her checkout table was gorgeous. I think I will steal her fabric treatment style for my Mom’s sewing table.

And, a wine rack to hold paper rolls–wrapping paper? Art paper? She has creative ideas everywhere you look.

Its exciting to see and hear about all the new creatively inspired businesses coming to Old Town Warrenton.  Make sure you stop by and visit Janet and the Empty Nest at 92 Main Street, Old Town Warrenton, Virginia.

{Warrenton is located approximately 40 minutes outside Washington DC, read more HERE and HERE}

Good luck Janet! We’ll definitely be stopping in again soon.

Turning Thirty-Something Fashionista Birthday Party!

Ohh….What a (fun) night!

 Terry & I (Christy was recovering in Tennessee from her Disney trip and Better Homes & Gardens Photoshoot–but we really missed her!) spent last week preparing for a very SPECIAL event…

Terry’s Birthday Party!

It’s safe to say that we both get a little carried away getting ready for parties. She is an event planner by trade, and I did event design as part of my graphic design business, so we tend to go a little over the top when we dream up an event.  {Don’t believe it? See more of our events HERE and HERE!}

But in reality, it’s not just because it’s fun for us, but also because we really want our guests to feel special and have an amazing time. So often as busy women and moms, we rarely have a chance to do many of the things that uplift us.  Terry, with her typical generous spirit, designed her birthday party with a focus on her guests’ enjoyment and pampering.

Terry had invited a clothing line, a jewelry line and a make-up line to her home, all for her guests to spend a night trying on– you guessed it– clothes, jewelry and make-up. A girl’s dream come true! And she made amazing food (of course) as well as delicious drinks.

The theme of the night was “Fashionista,” though for fun I had to mix in a little vintage Barbie on the paper products. It just seemed to go well, and I knew Terry would laugh. {Who doesn’t have a special place for memories of Barbie?}

The front door gave a hint of the fun inside.

The entryway held goodie bags for all the guests, as well as shopping bags for decoration.

The girls enjoyed trying on clothes…

…and jewels and make-up.

To quench the guests’ thirst, there was a “Make Your Own” Champagne/Cider Bar. There was champagne and sparkling cider with a choice of mix-ins, including fruit purees of strawberry, raspberry or peach, as well as orange juice for mimosas.

And since every birthday needs cake, pink cupcakes graced with Barbie’s silhouette held center stage.

I framed some vintage Barbie fashion prints from a calendar, and these will soon have a new home in my daughter’s room–a nice party souvenir.

 It was such a nice evening. One other note, we know parties like this can be costly. Terry shared that she was so touched that several of her friends gave her party “necessities” as their birthday gift; for instance, one friend brought the champagne, another the cupcakes. It made her life easier, and took some of the burden off her.  Isn’t that a wonderful idea?

Her friend Sarah even made her the cute “Fashionista” banner.

 Here are the happy birthday girls.  Terry shared her birthday celebration with her college friend, Gretchen, as her birthday is the day after! How fun is that?

Terry will be back with a post on all the delicious food she made next week, so make sure to come back again!

Pretending to be Supermodels…

Have you noticed our new look? Thanks to some amazing photography of the three of us by Jessica Oatman, we have a new Blog header and have freshened up our “About Us” page.

We had such a great time working with Jessica. She really listened to our ideas, and spent time talking about what we hoped for and looking at the inspiration shots we had gathered. OK, actually Terry was the Creative Director on our end, Christy and I just stood where we were told, and smiled through the cold!

Our goal was to get some fun shots that captured our personalities, that would feel fresh and would work within the space limitations of our blog pages.

Our inspiration for a large part of our shoot was the Mad Men era, in fact Christy and Terry both were able to wear vintage dresses (Christy from her mother and Terry from her Grandmother). These were the most fun shots to do.

We also took some dressed up shots as all three of us love any reason to get all ‘glammed up’.

Finally, we did a whole mess of outside casual shots and individual headshots.

And we did all this in a 2 hour window—including wardrobe/hair/jewelry changes. Unfortunately, the hotel where we stayed and held the shoot at was not very accommodating of extending our check-out time, and so we had to rush through much of the pictures to wrap up and race out of there by noon. Jessica was super-efficient and had some great suggestions for what have become some of our favorite pictures.

And, did we mention it was freezing with rain threatening that day? I don’t know how supermodels do it!

Thanks Jessica, we look forward to working with you again! You can read more about Jessica (her story is incredible) on her Blog here.

Thanks for stopping by~

I {heart} IKEA…

Last week Terry and I got ourselves a babysitter and went off on a field trip to IKEA. I was in search of new family room curtains (you can read about my Ballard failure HERE) and some more storage to make my soon-to-be “for sale” house less cluttered. Terry is creating a fabulous kid/art/storage/learning center in her basement (maybe that was still a secret?) Anyway…its going to be AMAZING, but I will let her tell you more on that soon.

We had a great time. IKEA can be so very overwhelming, so we didn’t linger too long in the areas that didn’t have what we were trying to focus on. This is, to me, the only way to deal with the place –when you suffer from Design ADD like I do– unless you want to never accomplish anything and feel overwhelmed at the end of the day. Of course when this happens I am also strangely inspired by all the cheap creative design ideas that run around in my head upon leaving the place!

Here are some of the quick snaps I took of what I was impressed with this trip. (sorry for I-phone photos in the strange IKEA lighting)

I LOVE this new white furniture…I really would like this glassed in Armoire in my daughter’s room. Its really an adaptable piece that will work as she grows, and I think it was only around $300? And it has a matching dresser too.

And this bookcase wall could work anywhere, what great storage. And I have always loved these chaise lounges…my bedroom really needs one, I think…

In the kitchen section, I loved both of these …the gray subway tile was so fresh paired with their white cabinets. I could also see this in a yellow/white/gray kitchen, which is so popular right now.

And…for those that don’t like the idea (or work involved) of painting older cabinets, new IKEA cabinets are a great option. These black cabinets were really nice looking, and they would work great in an office space too. (like my black and beige office space, maybe?)

I did find curtains, they have a great selection…I will be back with a post on my family room update, we are two weeks and counting on listing the house for sale. I have a TON to do!

More info on these products can be found here:
