New Years’ Organizing Giveaway

THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED!

We ran a giveaway a few months ago with almost exactly the same items (shelf paper and chalkboard labels), and it was so popular with everyone that we knew it would be great to have a re-run in January, the month when everyone is organizing and tweaking their decor.  So, here’s what we have for you this week:

Two packages of turquoise-blue chevron shelf paper (four rolls, total), and twenty chalkboard vinyl labels.  Tell me you can’t think of a thousand ways to use these!  These are the same exact chalkboard labels that I used to organize the shoe boxes in my closet:

Of course, you don’t have to organize your shoes with them.  Maybe you need to label toy bins in the playroom, or organize batteries and lightbulbs in the closet.  You might want to use them on flour, sugar, and other dry goods in the pantry, or to label your laundry supplies.  I could go on and on!  You’ll soon realize that you could use hundreds. :)

The chevron shelf paper is like this gray pattern that I used in my dining room on the panels of my buffet (but obviously, it’s turquoise):

Amy used the same pattern, along with a turquoise quatrefoil, in her pantry:

And then she used a gorgeous black quatrefoil in her butler’s pantry:

Amy S., who just happens to be a good friend of mine, used the rolls that she won in the last giveaway to line the back of a gorgeous antique cabinet, and it looks awesome.  One of our readers, Nicole B., told me on Facebook that she used some to cover her KitchenAid mixer.  That is probably the most creative idea I’ve heard yet, but I’ve also used a different roll (brown zebra, if you must know) to cover a drum lampshade, a round wooden tin, and the door panels on my daughter’s armoire, because I’m reworking her room once again.  The fabric under the giveaway goodies is her new duvet comforter, by the way.

So, of course you want to know how to enter.  You can enter up to five times, depending on how “connected” you are/want to be.  Here’s what you do:

1.  Sign up for email updates, like us on Facebook, or follow us on Twitter or Pinterest.  All of that is on the right sidebar and gets you one entry.  Leave me a comment below telling me you follow/like us.

2.  Share the giveaway link on Facebook, 1 entry (leave one comment)

3. Mention the giveaway in your blog, 1 entry (leave one comment).

4.  Pin the giveaway on Pinterest, 1 entry (leave one comment).

5.  Tweet about the giveaway, 1 entry (leave one comment).

So, you can leave up to five comments below.  Make sense?  Let me know if not!

The giveaway runs now through Tuesday, January 15th at 12pm CST.  We’ll announce the winner via email and on the blog on Wednesday, January 16th.  Good luck!  Can’t wait to hear what y’all do with these goodies!

Kids’ Artwork Organization {Organizing Life}

Recently our good friend/reader Leslie posted a request on our facebook wall~

i seriously need help with all the paper coming home from the twins’ school! ideas for storing/displaying/keeping all the art etc??? we are renting and in a small space, need clever ideas…the paper is taking over…

I can relate, can’t you? Leslie has the most adorable kindergarten boy/girl twins and I can just imagine all the beautiful work they bring home. However, its twice as much paper for her to deal with!

Before I share the way I deal with my kids’ art and school papers, I wanted to share some ideas I found that also might help Leslie {0r anyone else} overwhelmed with all that paper.

This inexpensive IKEA curtain system could hold artwork and is a great use of an empty wall.

{source}

At the end of the year I would put all these sheets in a large notebook but in the meantime, a paper towel holder and some clear sheet protectors are all you need for this solution. Since I know firsthand that most preschool and kindergarten artwork often varies in size/shape/thickness, this may not work for those with younger children, but it’s still a neat idea.

{source}

This idea might not be very practical in a rental home, but there is a wealth of ideas here, like tacking sheet metal to the wall to create a magnetic surface for artwork, etc. Ikea sells smaller versions of metal boards which would work perfectly.

OK, here is the art/paper solution I have come up with, I can relate to Leslie’s issue as two of my children still bring home work on a regular basis. My oldest is mostly done with the “art” stage, but I will show you in a minute where I keep his school papers for the long-term.

First, I built a large chalkboard in the hallway off our kitchen. I recently added some inexpensive black hooks along the bottom molding. Each child gets ONE hook for their current favorite piece of art, or “A” spelling test.

Here is the funny thing, did you notice? My way-to-saavy-for-her-age three-year old, removed her brother’s work and added in another piece of her artwork! So, I should say, “ideally” each child gets one special piece on display at a time, how sneaky she is!

Outside of this display, all their artwork {that I decide to keep :) } goes into this super easy storage solution.

I started making these art folders years ago when my first son was young. The idea came from a neighbor who taught art classes in her home. At the end of the year, she gave each student a “portfolio” made from folded posterboard. It was inexpensive, easy to make, easy to store and holds a ton– even the thicker “paper plate” type artwork fits in fine.

Because they are so thin, they are easy to store. I tuck mine under my kitchen desk, right where I clean out backpacks.

At the end of the year, I give each folder a quick clean out. I have learned that saving every single piece of “fall” artwork may seem important in October, but once the folder is full, it’s easier to let some of the less, ahhh…creative? artwork go.

What’s left after the ‘art purge’ goes into my insanely simple storage system…each kid has one box for all the things I deem important enough to keep. Someday I plan to pass their boxes down to them–like at college graduation when we dump all their stuff on them and my husband and I escape to a tiny beach house somewhere…right? :)

In these bins you find all sorts of things in addition to their artwork, report cards, baby blankets, etc…I hope they will be glad I kept all this someday.

To make the Art Portfolios:

Use regular inexpensive posterboard, full-size.

In our house, each kid has a “color” for things, it helps eliminate fighting over who gets what, and their poster board is color-coded as such.

Anyway, fold the posterboard exactly in half.

I cut a few inches off each side, I have a large paper cutter but you can use scissors and a ruler, or just leave them as is. Then tape along the inside right on the edge. Again, I have an incredibly useful tape gun from my former wedding invitation business, but you can use double-sided tape, glue or even just staple them.

Once the sides are stuck together, just add a label on the front for each child.

Here is the printable version of the labels I made, you can download the PDF HERE, and add in your child’s name either on your computer or just write it in.

click to download labels

I print my labels on white cardstock, then for these I added a solid color cardstock behind each label so it would stand out.

Their art just slides in, nice and neat.

That’s my solution. How about you all? What other ideas for Leslie do you have? Please share!

Pantry (Re) Organization

Happy New Year, everyone!  First of all, let me apologize for my lengthy absence from blogging (especially to Amy and Terry, who covered for me while I was on hiatus).  And, while you read the title and know that this post is going to be about how I reorganized my pantry, let me show you one of the reasons I haven’t been online much.

Gratuitous Picture of Our Darling New Family Member!

Yes, we have a new puppy, delivered on Christmas Eve!  Our golden retriever, Madison, died last Christmas (the night of the 25th, to be exact), and our house just hasn’t been the same without a dog.  I thought of a million reasons NOT to get a dog right now–at the top of the list is the fact that we’ll be moving this summer, and, oh yeah, our hundred-year-old hardwood floors.  But despite all of that, it just seemed that the timing was right.

So, forgive my digression, but I just had to explain what I’ve been doing instead of blogging (i.e., following Bodie around to make sure he’s not peeing or chewing where he’s not supposed to when he’s out of his crate).

Now, on to the pantry.  Don’t we all feel the urge to organize come January?  I think it’s because we spend time in almost every room of our houses, taking Christmas ornaments and decorations down and putting things back in order.  Although, usually after a month of Christmas preparations and celebrations, things aren’t really back in order, are they?  Plus, as I try to integrate all our lovely presents into our home, I realize how much junk stuff that we have.

Since we’re moving this summer, I’ll be going through virtually everything we own over the next few months, deciding whether it’s worth taking along or not.  That’s one benefit of being married to someone in the military–the frequent moves give you ample opportunity to pare down and streamline.

One area that’s been crying out for attention is my pantry.  I love our kitchen, and it’s the biggest one I’ve ever had, but the pantry is a bit lacking.  The reason is that the owners knocked out walls and combined three rooms to make the kitchen, and so there’s tons of cabinet space, but no walk-in closet-style pantry that newly constructed homes have.  I find that it’s hard to find places for my infrequently-used appliances, like my food processor and bread machine, and I don’t want it all out on my counter.   I’ve solved the problem in part by keeping most of my grocery stockpile downstairs in the cellar and minimizing what stays in the kitchen.  My kids may complain when they have to walk outside in the winter to go into the cellar to retrieve an ingredient for dinner, but it could be worse–they could be walking to school in the snow, uphill, both ways, like we did!

This is the home we have been lucky enough to enjoy these last few years. (Click HERE for the whole tour).

And here is one that shows some of the kitchen:

The kitchen

So, here’s the before picture of the pantry.  I feel a little bit embarrassed about showing this to you, but don’t we all have trouble spots in our homes?  My bread machine was in use on the counter, so that’s why there’s open space on the left side–usually things are falling out when I open the doors!

First, I pulled everything out.  I know that some people can take several days to do a project like this, but I am not one of those people.  Having all that junk stuff out on my counters and floor is incentive to get things done!

I decided to jazz the pantry up a bit by adding 1/2″ wide ribbon to the front of the shelves.  It was on sale at Hobby Lobby, and I just glue-gunned it on so that I can pull it off easily if and when I’m tired of it.

I also ordered chalkboard Contact paper online (click HERE
to order it from Amazon through our affiliate program–this is where I got mine).  It nearly killed me to have to wait for it to be delivered, and it took forever.  I’m an immediate-gratification kind of girl!  I put chalkboard contact paper inside the cupboard doors so that I could write menus, grocery lists, or just let the kids doodle.  I didn’t want to use chalkboard paint because I wanted to be able to remove everything when the times comes without a lot of fuss.  This worked out perfectly, and I had enough left over to put chalkboard labels on my big jars of flour and sugar on the counter and on the smaller jars I bought for the pantry.

I did take a page from some of the awesome pantry reorganizations I’ve seen online (like Shelley’s from House of Smiths–you must look at it–here), and decanted whatever I could into mason jars, baskets, glass bottles, and canisters.  The baskets are from TJ Maxx–I already had them–and most of the glass decanters are from Wal-Mart and Marshall’s (any excuse to go to TJ Maxx and Marshall’s–plus they’re usually less than the big-box stores).

After organizing but before doing the doors.

Note the obligatory row of San Pellegrino bottles that everyone has to have in their re-organized pantry, I guess because they’re so darned pretty.  I actually drink mine–love S. Pellegrino!

I had to take a close-up of my chip rack.  Like my wall chalkboard calendar, it is an object of humor (derision? envy?) from my friends, but I love it.  Fortunately, this pantry has adjustable shelves, so I was able to remove a shelf to make room for my chip rack.  I will confess that I have a second (larger) one down in the cellar, and I use whichever one fits best in whichever house we’re living in.  I think I bought them both on Ebay for $20 (with shipping).  I’ve seen them at garage sales and flea markets before, but remember, I’m all about immediate gratification, so I had to just buy the sizes that I needed when I saw them!

Is this OCD or what?!

Here’s the finished product–hope you like it!  Oh, I forgot to mention the black and white polka dot paper.  That’s just scrapbook paper that I adhered using repositionable Photo Mount, so we can pull it down when we move.  The cabinets are all white with black granite countertops, so it might work for the next residents.

I hope you like it!

This pantry was featured on HouseLogic.com and the writer, Lisa Kaplan Gordon, did a tremendous job with the write-up and includes some details that I didn’t think to mention in the above post.  So feel free to click through and read about it HERE if you’re interested in more on my pantry!

P.S.  We’ve moved to a new house since, and I redid that pantry, too.  It’s MUCH bigger, but I had just as much fun.  Click {here} to read all about it!  Also, Amy’s gorgeous pantry redo is {here}.

Thanks for stopping by!
