Office Space

A few months ago one of those exciting emails popped into our email shortly after I shared this post on my chair makeover(s). An editor from a magazine was asking for more pictures of my office and could she maybe submit it for possible inclusion in a specialty shelter publication?

I was stunned! Of course, I staged {and cleaned up!} the space and sent her some photographs. We did several iterations with color “pops” but sadly, the powers that be decided not to include this room.

I can’t admit to even being surprised. I don’t even have a rug in here yet so I kind of didn’t really ever think it would get picked. I can honestly say in this case, it was fun to be “nominated”. There are so many projects I would like to do for this space, I just can’t feel upset that at this stage it wasn’t selected.

I love working in this space. I have a gorgeous lake view out the window and a space where my daughter does her little art projects right next to my desk.

In addition to the workspace in here, we added this IKEA chair as another reading spot for our kids and they have a TV in here where they can watch or play video games away from the rest of the house. With kid at different ages, separation is often essential to my sanity!

Almost everything in here came from IKEA.  I put this room together several years ago when I started my wedding invitation design business {now closed}. I wanted something similar to the Pottery Barn “project” desk so I made up my own with three Expedits and 2 long black desk tops. I have tons of storage for all the paper I use/used with my graphic design business.

The armoire where I store gift wrap and other craft supplies is tucked behind the doors, out of the way.

So even though you won’t see this room when you are flipping through a magazine in the grocery store check-out line, I still love working here each day.

Tracey’s Home Tour {part two}

We are back, as promised, with more of our friend Tracey’s pretty home. If you missed part one, click HERE to see her recent kitchen renovation.

She has such great style we took some pictures in some of her other rooms while we were there photographing the kitchen. We thought we needed to share a few more of her inspiring rooms.

This is her Living Room. She actually recovered her former gray couch with a white Ikea slipcover, and no, her original couch wasn’t from Ikea…with just some minor modification to the hidden parts of the slipcover, she made it work perfectly with her existing furniture.

She has decorated much of her room from finds at Target (like the chair) or Homegoods (the barrel sidetable shown above).

Love the pop of pink from the flowers mixing with the metallic green pillow, and here is a peak at their cute canine, Dash.

She recently (after we were there)  got this great ottoman from where else? Target! She emailed us a picture so we could see the update, and here it is.

Here is the view into her Dining Room from the attached Living Room…

This was your standard, brass, builder light fixture. She sprayed it black, added shades and a sparkly cord cover. Huge difference!

She has a talent for mixing the same color scheme throughout her rooms, there are pops of the green from the kitchen color scheme in her gray, white and black dining room. She has great styling and pretty vignettes throughout her entire home.

Moving across the home to their home office, I LOVE this gray and orange space. I have to say, reading back I thought to myself I would never expected to say that I am a fan of that color scheme, but it really works. She worked with a passed-down loveseat and integrated the orange/peach tones with dark gray walls, classic white shelving and colorful artwork.

I wonder if she has anymore rooms for us to show!? Maybe she will have us back again :)

Thanks Tracey for allowing us into your home and to share it here at Magnolia Lane.

Home Office and Learning Center Progress

A few months ago, the ladies here at 11 Magnolia Lane shared our home goals for 2012.  One of my goals was to turn a portion of our basement into an office for me and an educational center for my children.    I am thrilled to say, our office has been designed and installed so now it is time to decorate.

I have to admit, decorating doesn’t always come easily to me, I often call Amy and Christy in for validation.  What would I do without them?

So here are some photos of the old office and as you can see, it was a blank canvas.

Basement prior to installation

Here is the new and improved basement office.  I am really excited to have my own desk and space, and just look at all the additional storage I have as well!

My children are just as excited and are begging me to buy them chairs so they can do their homework at their new desks.  I guess I has better get on it before they lose motivation to do their school work.  IKEA, here we come!!

As you can see, there is a lot of open shelving that I need to fill and keep organized.  I also have some corner bookshelves that are exposed so I will need to find baskets and/or bins to help maintain an orderly look.

I have been pulling some inspiration from the web and these are a few examples of what I like.

Of course I found an office with red accents… if you know me at all, you know I love RED!!!

Here is another great office from Houzz.  I love the cork board and the black and white organizational baskets.  Moving forward in 2012, I am committed to streamlining the decor in my home.  Now that we have ebony floors on our main level, I feel that black and white is the direction I am moving toward.   It is simply a timeless color combination and it allows you to add pops of color throughout your home.  The example below has blue accents, which I really liked.

Here is a chair that I have been pining over for months.  It is called the Zuo Modern Premiere Leather Office chair and costs well over $550.00.  That is way out of our budget, especially since I am looking for 3 chairs that match.

Here’s the chair…isn’t it beautiful!?

I cannot wait to decorate and share the final office reveal.  Amy and I are heading to Ikea this week where I plan to pick up tons of organizational supplies to help me design and organize my new basement work space.
