My Latest “Thrift Shop Chic” Outfits

**Don’t forget to enter our organization giveaway {here} through October 21, 2012***

When I was growing up, I would have died rather than shop at a thrift store.  I was lucky enough to have the option not to, growing up in an affluent suburb of Washington, DC, but a lot of people don’t have the luxury of being so snooty.  Both of my parents came from more humble beginnings, and I remember that when my maternal grandmother died, my mother brought home all sorts of “treasures” from her home.  I thought everything was chippy, dirty, and old-looking–was I dumb, or what?  I’ve mended my ways and now realize that older stuff is usually better–it’s higher quality, better made, and maintains its value.  Plus, lots of wonderful memories cling to furniture and household goods that are inherited from older generations.

Now, thrift store clothing runs the gamut.  Some of it is a fabulous deal (fur coats, couture labels, designer bags), and some of it is just junk.  My daughter and I joke about the number of “Grandma sweaters” we find at the thrift store.  Grandma sweaters are the ones that your grandmother gave you for Christmas that are so hideous that you just donate them immediately.  I got quite a few of those growing up! :)  If you’re willing to spend some time sifting through the dross, though, you can find some great deals.  Throw them in the washer and they’re as good as new.

A couple of good friends and I have a running contest to see who can find the best outfits at the thrift store.  Here are my latest entries (take THAT, girls!):

Here I am with our sweet rescue dog, Harley, at the annual golden retriever rescue picnic.  I didn’t realize it until I posted the picture on my personal Facebook page and a friend asked me what style my Vera [Bradley] purse was, but my entire outfit is from the thrift store, minus my boots and sunglasses!  The pink jacket was $10, the brown hoodie underneath was $4, the purse (not a Vera, by the way) was $3, and the jeans were $4.   If it wasn’t for the sunglasses and the boots (budget busters for sure), the hubby would have been pretty proud of me!  Of course, buying the rest of the outfit at Goodwill means that I can splurge on the sunglasses and the boots.  It’s all a matter of balance.

This top is my latest find.  It’s blue and red chains are a pretty obvious Hermes knockoff, but I might be the only person in Nashville to know that!

While I wore it with a pair of dark-wash SFAM jeans here, it would work equally well with a pencil skirt and ballet flats for a dressier occasion.  Silver hoops and a silver chunky chain necklace completed the look.  Check out the reversible cuffs (love that blue and white stripe), but ignore the tiny ballet dancer in the background.  She was getting ready to go to Nutcracker rehearsal (something that we do A LOT!).  Not bad for a $3 shirt, huh?

I guess I’ve changed a lot since my youth, because not only am I admitting that I buy clothes at the thrift store, but I’m broadcasting it to a pretty big audience!  I think that buying good quality used items makes me both a good steward of our household income and our environment.  Why go out and buy something new, possibly of inferior quality or sewn in a sweatshop, for ten to twenty times the price of a good vintage item?  I am blessed in that I can afford to buy new items, I just choose not to do it as often as I used to.  Do any of you have some fabulous scores from the thrift store that you want to share?

Thanks for stopping by!

“F” is for Fall Fashion Inspiration Board

F is for Fall Fashion

Don’t you wish you could shop all day long?  I sure do!  Unfortunately, my busy schedule and empty wallet usually gets in the way of my shopping dreams:).  Luck for me, I have found a creative outlet to help me through the days that I cannot shop.  I am sure by now most of you have heard of Polyvore.  Have you ever used it?  I use it and I love it.  It is a fun online fashion social-commerce website that allows you to create inspiration boards without spending a dime.  It as actually voted Time Magazine‘s list of 50 best websites of 2011.

I thought it would be fun to share some fall fashion inspiration this week.    It is just another side of me; my fashion “likes” and my shopping “must haves”.  I will admit that most of these posts fall into the category of day dreaming but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do :)   Come dream and drool over some fall “must haves” this 2012 season!

Happy Shopping!

Turning 37 in Style {Party Menu}

Fashionista Party!!

A couple weeks ago I turned 37 and hosted a fashion birthday party to celebrate in style. You can check out all the fun party details HERE if you missed the first post.  It was so much fun to shop with all my girlfriends inside my own home.   We drank, we ate, we shopped, and just celebrated all the things that women love.

I am back to share the menu that I choose for this party because it was quick and easy, perfect for any celebration.

Inspiration for my own"Make Your Own Mimosa Bar from Every Scrap Countz

I had found this photo (above) on Pinterest a while back and it inspired me to have my own “Make Your Own Mimosa Bar”.  Who doesn’t like champagne and doesn’t it just go hand and hand with shopping and celebrating???   It is easy to stock (just buy your favorite champagne) and some pure fruit juice or puree.  I offered four different kinds of “add-ins”.

Mimosa Bar Flavors
  • Mimosa (Champagne and Orange Juice)
  • Bellini (Champagne and Peach Puree)
  • Razzle Dazzle (I made up this name but it is simply Champagne and Raspberry Puree)
  • Strawberry Fizz (Another made up name but simply Champagne and Strawberry Puree)

Make your own Mimosa Bar

To go with the champagne, I served a few of my favorite easy to make appetizers.

 Goat Cheese and Scallion Crostini

Amy introduced me to this easy entertaining appetizer and it seems to be a staple at each and every party we host (alone or together!).  It is so fresh, fragrant, colorful and the EASIEST APPETIZER EVER! Seriously, it has FOUR ingredients and takes less then FIVE minutes to make, but your guests will never know.

Ingredients

  • One loaf of french bread, sliced
  • One bunch scallions (green onions)
  • One package of goat cheese, softened
  • olive oil

Directions

  1. Turn on your broiler so your oven is ready
  2. Puree the scallions (white and green parts) in a food processor, adding olive oil until it resembles a sauce (don’t over mix, you just want it to be spreadable)
  3. Spread the scallions/olive oil on french bread, then spread a nice chunk of goat cheese on top.
  4. Broil 2 to 3 minutes until golden, serve immediately & enjoy!!

Caprese Skewers

Caprese Skewers

Here is another simple hors d’ oeuvre that uses three very fresh ingredients and is always a popular choice.  It take a tiny bit of time to skewer each one together but once you are done, they look and taste wonderful.

Ingredients

  • Fresh mozzarella (the small round balls)
  • Fresh basil
  • Grape tomatoes
  • Balsamic glaze (optional)
  • Salt & pepper
  • Toothpicks or kabob skewers

Directions

  1. Slice grape tomatoes in half
  2. Create an assembly line of skewers, cheese, basil and tomatoes
  3. Skewer a mozzarella ball, a basil leaf and 1/2 a tomato onto each skewer (flat side down)
  4. Serve on a pretty white platter or in a fancy glass
  5. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar or glaze (glaze can be purchased at most stores in the vinegar aisle and is thicker and sweeter than most balsamic vinegars)
  6. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste

We also enjoyed cupcakes, however there isn’t a recipe as they came from Wegman’s and they were delicious! After all, what’s a birthday party without {a little} cake?

I hope your next birthday celebration is at tasty as mine was!!

Thanks for stopping by,

Turning Thirty-Something Fashionista Birthday Party!

Ohh….What a (fun) night!

Terry & I (Christy was recovering in Tennessee from her Disney trip and Better Homes & Gardens Photoshoot–but we really missed her!) spent last week preparing for a very SPECIAL event…

Terry’s Birthday Party!

It’s safe to say that we both get a little carried away getting ready for parties. She is an event planner by trade, and I did event design as part of my graphic design business, so we tend to go a little over the top when we dream up an event.  {Don’t believe it? See more of our events HERE and HERE!}

But in reality, it’s not just because it’s fun for us, but also because we really want our guests to feel special and have an amazing time. So often as busy women and moms, we rarely have a chance to do many of the things that uplift us.  Terry, with her typical generous spirit, designed her birthday party with a focus on her guests’ enjoyment and pampering.

Terry had invited a clothing line, a jewelry line and a make-up line to her home, all for her guests to spend a night trying on– you guessed it– clothes, jewelry and make-up. A girl’s dream come true! And she made amazing food (of course) as well as delicious drinks.

The theme of the night was “Fashionista,” though for fun I had to mix in a little vintage Barbie on the paper products. It just seemed to go well, and I knew Terry would laugh. {Who doesn’t have a special place for memories of Barbie?}

The front door gave a hint of the fun inside.

The entryway held goodie bags for all the guests, as well as shopping bags for decoration.

The girls enjoyed trying on clothes…

…and jewels and make-up.

To quench the guests’ thirst, there was a “Make Your Own” Champagne/Cider Bar. There was champagne and sparkling cider with a choice of mix-ins, including fruit purees of strawberry, raspberry or peach, as well as orange juice for mimosas.

And since every birthday needs cake, pink cupcakes graced with Barbie’s silhouette held center stage.

I framed some vintage Barbie fashion prints from a calendar, and these will soon have a new home in my daughter’s room–a nice party souvenir.

It was such a nice evening. One other note, we know parties like this can be costly. Terry shared that she was so touched that several of her friends gave her party “necessities” as their birthday gift; for instance, one friend brought the champagne, another the cupcakes. It made her life easier, and took some of the burden off her.  Isn’t that a wonderful idea?

Her friend Sarah even made her the cute “Fashionista” banner.

Here are the happy birthday girls.  Terry shared her birthday celebration with her college friend, Gretchen, as her birthday is the day after! How fun is that?

Terry will be back with a post on all the delicious food she made next week, so make sure to come back again!

“Spring” Forward Inspiration Board

It’s that time of year again… time to spring forward and time to give up that extra hour of glorious sleep.  Losing that extra hour is such a difficult transition for me and especially for my children.   I am trying not to fret as there is so much to look forward to in the upcoming months.

I just wanted to share some “Spring” forward inspiration to get you through the time change this weekend.

Gone Glamping

Autum in all it’s glory!!

I can already smell Fall?  S’mores toasting, apple pies baking and pumpkin ravioli sauteing. I cannot wait to see the leaves change and the harvest moon brightly shinning above.  Fall is by far, my favorite time of year.

My hubby and I have always been into hiking, fishing and camping- we are definitely into the great outdoors.  With the addition of two boys, our family makes any excuse to spend a weekend exploring the woods.  I spent most of my time as a child exploring the woods and and searching for little natural treasures around my home in the beautiful Hudson Valley.  It is a joy to watch my children as they now marvel in all that nature has to offer.  Camping and hiking have been a great way for my family to bond, relax and enjoy a “back-to-basics” style of  living.

As much as I love to “rough it”, I am also a true Gemini, and need glaming things up once in a while.   Being the only girl in my house I sometimes feel the need to “get girly” so camping isn’t always the perfect get-a-way.  However,  I found the perfect solution for the ying and yang sides of my brain: “Glamping”!!

Glamorous Camping ofter the great outdoors in a very luxurious setting.  I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!   It is truly a romantic, relaxing and a luxurious way to spend time outdoors and with people you love.  I think this would be a perfect anniversary weekend away don’t you? ** Hint Hint Honey, I hope you’re readying my blog this week!!**

Here is a look at my perfect Glamping Anniversary Weekend!!!

Fall fashion perfect for a glamourous camping weekend!

Oscar Party Inspiration Board

For those of you who know me have come to accept and understand my love for celebrity gossip.   I am not sure if it is the fairy tale, the glitz or the glamor that pulls me in, but I love it!  I am avid reader of Popsugar.com and check in for my daily dose of mindless celebrity entertainment.  I am not saying that I am proud of this addiction (yes, sadly I cannot live without it) but the Hollywood buzz is to hard for me to resist.

With the Oscar’s are right around the corner my head is spinning with all the excitement. I can’t help to think about all the event planning and prepping that is going into Hollywood’s biggest night.  I imagine Wolfgang Puck and his culinary team are tirelessly chopping, mincing, grating and blanching in preparation of feeding Hollywood’s most notorious stars. I would love to be in his kitchen on Oscar night just to watch him work (and of course to eat one of his famous chocolate “Oscar” confections).

I know all of the nominees are going to extremes to ensure they look perfect on awards night.  They are primping, pampering, botoxing, cleansing, and and of course dieting to fit into whatever luxurious gown (or tux) they have decided upon.   The dresses and jewels definitely fit into the “fairy tale” side of Hollywood for me.

I don’t think I have enough time (or space) to get into the nominee’s or the films.  I definitely have my favorites (Black Swan and True Grit) but I cannot wait to see who the academy selects and who gets to take home OSCAR~~

I will see you all next week to discuss the best and worst dressed… until then, Ciao!

PS- thanks to those who inspire me….
