Terry’s Baby Shower

For those of you who follow us regularly, you know that one of us is expecting a baby boy very soon! And if you are new, that would be Terry!

photo-41

After weeks of prepping and coordinating– after all planning a party for someone who plans parties for a living is a challenging thing to do–we hosted her Baby Tea last weekend. I had the best time coordinating this event with several other of her dear friends, though I think I probably enjoyed the event just as much as the guest of honor.

{All pictures were graciously supplied by the talented LuMa photography}

We knew we wanted this shower to be as much about Terry as her baby. This is her third boy, and much as she would love to be welcoming a little girl, since she will now remain the family “Queen Bee” we chose that as the theme of the shower.

The event was held at a local Tea Room. I can’t say enough wonderful things about our experience with Tea Time, the were so accommodating, the food was perfect and they put up with our blogger/Type A craziness which included completely changing their usual pink decor to yellow and black for the event! {If you are in the Washington DC/Northern Virginia area, I highly recommend them for a ladies or girls event!}.

So, here are some of the many pretty images from the event.

It was a wonderful way to celebrate both Terry and her new little one. The day ended with one of my co-hostesses reading the sweetest poems about baby boys.  I will be back with a follow-up post on some of the items you see we used for party decor and more details. And before we know it, I am sure Terry will have some exciting baby news to share!

And special thanks to Baby Lifestyles Magazine for featuring this shower!

Summer Girls Night Out

A few weeks ago I hosted a Kick-Off Summer Girl’s Night Out Party. I wanted to get my new neighbors and friends together before summer got in full swing. It was a great night, and even more fun because Terry came down to help me pull it off and put her signature stylish touch on everything.

We started the night with drinks on the porch. I am so happy to say the weather cooperated and I finally got to host an event on my porch!

To start with, we offered the girls Peach Sangria served from a makeshift Bar on the porch. I will be back with the recipe soon as it was a HUGE hit! Everyone seemed to enjoy being outside as the sun set, and I thought one of the particularly fun parts was watching the guests who came from across the lake roll up to the party on their Beach Cruiser bikes. It’s the perfect form of transportation here at the beach!

Inside we had all the food, mostly some dips and my favorite cupcakes. I had my friend Janet, who sells Thirty-one bags have the bags on display, after all everyone can use a new summer bag, right?

{The goodie bags were from HERE }.

The menu was light, some of my favorite easy appetizers and some desserts, including Trader Joe’s macaroons and the delicious cupcakes from HERE.

It was a fun night and great to spend time with new friends and neighbors before we all set off the whirlwind of vacations, camps and activities summer brings.

Thanks for stopping by~

Turning Thirty-Something Fashionista Birthday Party!

Ohh….What a (fun) night!

 Terry & I (Christy was recovering in Tennessee from her Disney trip and Better Homes & Gardens Photoshoot–but we really missed her!) spent last week preparing for a very SPECIAL event…

Terry’s Birthday Party!

It’s safe to say that we both get a little carried away getting ready for parties. She is an event planner by trade, and I did event design as part of my graphic design business, so we tend to go a little over the top when we dream up an event.  {Don’t believe it? See more of our events HERE and HERE!}

But in reality, it’s not just because it’s fun for us, but also because we really want our guests to feel special and have an amazing time. So often as busy women and moms, we rarely have a chance to do many of the things that uplift us.  Terry, with her typical generous spirit, designed her birthday party with a focus on her guests’ enjoyment and pampering.

Terry had invited a clothing line, a jewelry line and a make-up line to her home, all for her guests to spend a night trying on– you guessed it– clothes, jewelry and make-up. A girl’s dream come true! And she made amazing food (of course) as well as delicious drinks.

The theme of the night was “Fashionista,” though for fun I had to mix in a little vintage Barbie on the paper products. It just seemed to go well, and I knew Terry would laugh. {Who doesn’t have a special place for memories of Barbie?}

The front door gave a hint of the fun inside.

The entryway held goodie bags for all the guests, as well as shopping bags for decoration.

The girls enjoyed trying on clothes…

…and jewels and make-up.

To quench the guests’ thirst, there was a “Make Your Own” Champagne/Cider Bar. There was champagne and sparkling cider with a choice of mix-ins, including fruit purees of strawberry, raspberry or peach, as well as orange juice for mimosas.

And since every birthday needs cake, pink cupcakes graced with Barbie’s silhouette held center stage.

I framed some vintage Barbie fashion prints from a calendar, and these will soon have a new home in my daughter’s room–a nice party souvenir.

 It was such a nice evening. One other note, we know parties like this can be costly. Terry shared that she was so touched that several of her friends gave her party “necessities” as their birthday gift; for instance, one friend brought the champagne, another the cupcakes. It made her life easier, and took some of the burden off her.  Isn’t that a wonderful idea?

Her friend Sarah even made her the cute “Fashionista” banner.

 Here are the happy birthday girls.  Terry shared her birthday celebration with her college friend, Gretchen, as her birthday is the day after! How fun is that?

Terry will be back with a post on all the delicious food she made next week, so make sure to come back again!

I wanted to share some inspiration as the 87th running of the world famous Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase race is this coming weekend here in Virginia.   It is also the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby and quite possibly the unveiling of the next triple crown winner.  Although I will not be attending either of these grand social events,  I wanted to pay homage with an inspiration board.

And…their…off!

Thanks to the following for all these wonderfully inspiring images:

The PoloHouse, Oh So Beautiful Paper, Collage of Life, Piker Road Pillow Co, Cmykmag, Southern Weddings

I will be back tomorrow to reveal my Kid’s Learning Center in our basement and announce the winners of the Simone Made It party package!

My Son’s 7th Birthday Camping Party & Giveaway

My oldest son turned seven last week.  I ache all over just typing the number– seven.  How did he get so big so fast?  He also has his first loose tooth, well actually teeth, as if turning seven wasn’t enough!

My son is totally into Star Wars, what seven-year old boy isn’t these days? Since we had a Star Wars party last year, we wanted to head in a different direction for this year.  We thought a camping party would be fun as we just built a rustic fire pit in our backyard.  We came up with a party plan that he loved and one that I felt I could still be creative in designing so here it is…. s’mores, roasted hot dogs, tents and a movie under the stars… What more could you ask for?  Also, can you guess what movie we watched?  Yup, Star Wars!!!

Camping Party Invite with Roasting Marshmallow

Here is the invitation…. don’t you just LOVE it!?!  I added the stick, marshmallow and ribbon to the top to make it a bit more “me.”   I cannot take full credit for the design as I ordered a party pack of printables from Simone Made It off her Etsy Store.  She is an amazing graphic designer, all her printables are super cute and so reasonably priced.    You just pick your design and she will send you a PDF file with a ton of printables to make your party special.  All you have to do is edit the wording to fit your needs and print them out.  Her Camping Party Package came with two invitation styles, thank you notes, cupcake toppers, water bottle wrappers, chocolate bar wrappers and so much more.

Also, Simone Made It has generously offered to give away TWO Party Printable Packages of your choice to TWO lucky 11 Magnolia Lane winners.   If you have a party on the horizon, you don’t want to miss out on this giveaway! Just leave us a comment on the bottom of this post telling us what party you could use the package for. For a 2nd Entry, become a follower by Linky tools and leave us a comment telling us so. And a 3rd entry, “like” 11 Magnolia Lane on Facebook and come back and tell us so. {This giveaway will run through May 3rd at 8pm EST}   {Edit: this giveaway is now closed, thanks to all who entered}

As most of our readers know, I am an event planner by trade, so planning a kids’ party can spiral a bit out of control, especially if it is for my own child :) .   Unfortunately, the only thing I don’t have control over is the weather and the rain gods were not on my side this past Saturday.  Needless to say, we didn’t roast s’mores over our rustic fire pit, we didn’t camp outdoors, and we didn’t watch a movie under the stars.  I didn’t get the photoshoot I wanted for the blog and to be honest, I don’t feel that I took enough quality pictures.  The party just didn’t go as planned and honestly, let’s face it… that happens.    I had to move everything indoors which wasn’t my vision but I assure you, the kids did not care one bit.  I am grateful I had the help of my husband and his parents to get me through the day and in the end, what really makes it the “perfect” party?  Is it the props?  The food? The 48 homemade cupcakes?  What really makes the perfect party?  I am still working on that answer and hopefully will have it figured out by the end of this post.  While we wait, here are some photo’s from my not so perfect “outdoor” party:)

Dessert Buffet Table

Dessert Buffet Table

 Since we couldn’t roast s’mores I decided to make some s’more pops.  I simply froze the marshmallows and then dipped them in dark chocolate and some graham cracker crumbs.  They were a huge hit and they were really easy to make.  I printed out “Go take a Hike” from one of Simone Made It printables and tied it all together with some brown twine.

“Go Take a Hike” Marshmallow Pops

 The cupcakes were a big job, I ended up having to make 48 as we had a lot of adults join in the fun.  I decided to make two styles, both made from scratch from this recipe I found from Food.com. They were decadent and so worth the time.  With the help of my mother-in-law, we frosted two different style cupcakes.  One was a chocolate s’more cupcakes adorned with mini marshmallows and the other was a very cute campfire cupcake with pretzel sticks and red and yellow flames.

To tie it all together and to bring the outdoors in, I asked my hubby and my father-in-law to cut some logs so that we could create rustic wood cake stands.  Aren’t they adorable?

 Here is another party favor I created by mixing Golden Grahams cereal, mini marshmallows and chocolate chips… I called it “Trail Mix” but my kids actually ate it like cereal the next day.  I cannot say that was a healthy breakfast but they sure enjoyed it:)

“Take Home S’more Fun”: S’more inspired trail mix party favor

 Lastly, my favorite prop for my son’s party was created by my father-in-law, aka, Papa Tom.  He is a woodworker and makes the most amazing furniture, bookshelves, kids’ race tracks and photo frames  a girl could ask for.  I have lots of Papa Tom creations to share with you over the next few weeks but now I have to get back to the party.  I found some adorable tents online and asked if he could design something for me.  I really wanted it to be simple, yet effective so the kids could sit under the tents while watching the movie outside.  Needless to say, he went above and beyond my expectations and this is what we ended up with… THREE amazing tents for the kids to enjoy and “camp” under.  Here is one that I placed near the dessert table.

Custom made tent by Papa Tom

 I have to say it was an amazing  party even if the rain kept us indoors for most of the event.  I had 20+ kids in my basement playing flash light tag, screaming their heads off, wrestling like super heroes and simply having a blast.   I guess that is the answer to my “perfect” party question.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, it can rain cats and dogs, you can buy your cupcakes from a store because in the end, that is not what they remember.    My son will remember playing flash light tag with his best friends David and Drew.  He will remember having his favorite girl, Hannah Banana, sleep over and eat extra special chocolate chip and marshmallow “trail mix” cereal for breakfast the next day.   He will remember that he had so much fun,and most importantly he will remember feeling special.   In the end, that is what made his 7th birthday “perfect”!! He had fun, he was happy, he was silly, smiled wide showing all his little loose baby teeth, and he laughed the entire time.  Rain or shine, indoors or out,  he was happy and that is what made his not so perfect party “perfect” for me.

Good Luck!

Now…we have another very exciting announcement (or two).  We are starting a new series by our favorite event guru, Terry, who is also a first-class culinary queen (and track star/tri-athlete can I mention?). Since January 1, Terry has been planning and organizing healthy menus for a “test” group of clients.

Starting February 1st, she will launch her month-long healthy eating plan here for our Magnolia Lane readers. It includes meal plans, recipes, shopping lists and healthy tips.  She is on her way to visit me this weekend (yay!), and we have a very full weekend of cooking, planning, photographing and even videoing for this series.  I can’t wait– I have seen the menus and they look SO delicious! This is a great chance to kick your New Year’s Resolutions into high gear by eating better and saving time and money. What could be better?

Finally, we have lots of other great stuff coming up. While our focus here often leads to our homes as so much of our lives are “in” them, Magnolia Lane as a blog actually began as a showcase for the events Terry & I worked on together (prior to my move to a different area). And, as we wanted to showcase Christy’s talent in her beautiful homes, the Blog bloomed into our collaboration of our various ideas and projects.

This spring, while of course we will continue along our same themes, we also hope to focus at times on simple and stress-free entertaining. We would love to feature (or have guests post) about your events in addition to those we are having. See this post HERE for more information or email us at 11magnolialane@gmail.com if you have a party or event you want to show-off.

I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend! Terry & I will be here in the kitchen working hard on our new series, so check back mid-week for more information.

And, a big thank you to Ramsign for allowing us to host their giveaway. Don’t forget to enter!

XO,

Black, White and Lime Baby Shower

Hi everyone!

I am so happy to be back especially after this past weekend of party planning.  My dear friend Trinity is pregnant with her first baby and I had the honor of throwing her a baby shower.  The weather was hot, sunny and a bit humid but the party really turned out great.  I had a 24 lovely women join us for a luncheon featuring delicious food, motherly words of advice and of course lots of adorable baby gifts.

My Back Yard, putting on the final touches before guests arrive

Under the Tent, the gorgeous flowers came from Wollam Gardens by Like Water for Tulips

The Invite with adorable lime green stroller

Trinity is such a stylish gal that I wanted her party to be a bit more sleek and modern, just like her.  She is also not finding out the sex of the baby (boy, boy, boy) so I had to choose an ambiguous color palette.  Amy, my Magnolia Lane partner-in-crime, created this amazing invite and our theme of lime, black and white took off.

Trinity looking fab in her Custom off the shoulder Lime Green Dress

We tried to add a few adorable details to make this shower more “baby”. First, Amy created cute tags for the lime green Jones Soda’s which read BABY Jones, how is that for adorable and creative?  I also pulled my son’s hand made white cradle out of storage and used that as our gift “table”.
