Baby Nursery Reveal!

baby nursery reveal flag

Baby boy K will be here in the next couple of weeks.   My family and I are trying to be patient but now that his nursery is complete and I am simply ready to meet our baby boy.   I find his room incredibly peaceful and I am drawn to it’s simplicity.

Baby Nursery

The white crib, drapes and bedding are angelic and pure.  They are the Vivian Drape from Ikea.  Two 56 X94 drapes come in each $10.00 pack.  I used them on the windows but I also used them to create the crib skirt since it was cheaper than buying fabric and sewing my own crib skirt.  I simply tucked them under the mattress so I can re-purpose the drapes once he is grown.

The turquoise and grey flags were designed by Amy.  She had the guests at my baby shower write well wishes on the back of each flag.  I think they add a pop of much-needed color and provide a sentimental touch to his room.   The star mirror came from a second hand store and I love that it has both gold and silver.  The light is from Home Depot and was under $75.00.

Map Baby Nursery

Don’t just love those vintage map letters?  That was a gift from my in-laws and really make the room extra special.  I added a ruffled table cloth to an existing round table.  The lamp was spray painted blue for an added pop of color.   The rocking chair has been with me since the beginning! I have rocked, fed, and read to my wonderful boys in that comfy chair so changing the fabric was just difficult for me to fathom.  I have loved that chair 8 years ago and continue to love it today.  I think the blues and greens in the map letters forgive the added shades of sage and cream.

Night stand Nursery

This dresser came from a local antique store.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep it original but I have to say that I love the wood and the brass handles.  I simply works for this room and adds that vintage feel.  The photo display was challenging for me.  I like how it turned out but I really stressed out over the layout.  Check out the gazelle head– it is my favorite piece on this wall.

Getting Ready for Baby- Nursery Sneak Peek

Terry Maternity

As most of you know, Baby Boy K is going to be here very soon. Over the past few months I decided to take a bit of a blogging break to prepare for his arrival. The time off has been bittersweet, but it was really good for my soul and my growing baby boy.  I have just over a month before this little guy arrives, and I have been working on a bunch of sewing projects as well as planning out his nursery.  Christy and Amy have been providing a ton of inspiration and lots of support over the past few months, and I am feeling very blessed and grateful for their friendship.

Here is a sneak peek of some of the items that I have been collecting over the past few months that will be displayed our baby boy’s nursery. I cannot wait to share the final nursery reveal and hear what you all think.

Vintage Map Suitcase filled with a beautiful plaid blanket (thank you Amy) , toy money (Thank You Grammy) and his sonogram photo.

Vintage Map Suitcase filled with a beautiful plaid blanket (thank you Amy) , toy money (Thank You Grammy) and his sonogram photo.

As you can see I have a vintage map theme in mind for the nursery.  I found this amazing wooden soda crate from an antique store here in Warrenton.  I fell in love and just had to have it.  It was reasonably priced and the perfect storage solution for toys and books.  Speaking of books, that Better Homes and Gardens book is a special gift from Christy.  It has vintage stories and offers an awesome pop of color for this neutral nursery.
The maps are just USGS topographical maps that you can purchase at any outdoor hiking store or even online.  I am lucky enough to be married to a cartographer (aka a “map maker”) so I didn’t have to go very far to get these.  I love the shades of green and blue that these maps bring into the nursery.  The darker “vintage” styled map is actually wrapping paper from Paper Source.  They have an amazing collection of wrapping paper which costs $3.95 per sheet.  I particular love this piece because of the vintage tea-stained finish.   I also found the ABC sheet of wrapping paper and thought it was really cute.  It is reminiscent of vintage school art and I plan to have that framed as well.  Check out all the cool and inexpensive wrapping paper products that the Paper Source has to offer.

This is my favorite find for the baby's room. It was not as cheap as I would have hoped but I know I will cherish this piece for years to come. It is solid wood and the antlers (you have to wait) are amazing.

I hope to have a photo wall mixing white, silver and gold frames.  I have not purchased all the frames yet but I did find this frame at a sweet baby store.  I love the “coming soon” window.  Sonograms are just so special.  Hard to imagine that back when my mom had me they didn’t do them.  It is such a treasure have to this photo.

This mirror was a steal and I love the star shape as well as the silver and gold. It is perfectly set above the crib.

I had to include his closet that is filled with baby clothes generously donated by my dear friends. This baby is so lucky to have a closet filled with gently used clothes.

I do hope to spruce up the baby’s closet, but I had to share this photo of sweet newborn sized clothing.  I am so thankful for all my friends and family that have passed down clothes and supplies.  This baby is so very lucky, as am I!

I just love this PINK baby sleeping sign that Christy sent me.   Even a mom of three boys deserves a bit of pink!  What a great gift for any mom!

Carnival-Striped Side Table for My Big (Little) Girl’s Room

My 8-almost-9-year-old’s room is getting another facelift–not a huge redo, just a little tweaking.  When we moved to Nashville last summer, she told me she was done with the pink and green bedroom she had in our old house (below):

Sigh.  I loved that room!  But, I understood that she was ready to be done with pink.  She chose a pale aqua for the walls and we paired it with white and celery green.  It was nice and peaceful, but that’s not really what she had in mind.  I talked it over with her and we decided that bold punch of color would help jazz the room up a bit.  After much deliberation (red? peach?) she actually decided on watermelon pink.  Yes.  PINK.  Again.  Granted, a brighter shade than she’d had before, but still, pink.  I had a quick giggle and got to work.

When I grabbed this little table at a yard sale for $3, it was brown and kind of homely.  The first time I painted it, it wound up with a pink top (Krylon’s Ballet Slipper, I think) and white legs, and an awesome pom pom fringe trim.

Sometimes this little table was used as a nightstand, and sometimes it went at the foot of the bed, depending on the time of year.  When we moved to Nashville, it lost its pom pom fringe and gained a celery green top:

In case you’re wondering, I loved both of those previous iterations, but hey, you’ve got to roll with the changes!  It’s her room, after all, and for $3 I can’t exactly complain that it’s an expensive antique.

When we decided to add pops of watermelon pink throughout the room, I thought about painting an awning stripe on the table top.  I simply measured the width of the top (21″) and divided by 3″ as I thought that would be a good width for the stripes.  I decided to use three different colors:  aqua, pink, and green.   After measuring and taping off my stripes with blue painter’s tape, I got to work.  Here’s the result:

The paint colors were kind of random.  I didn’t paint the green at all as it was already there–that was Krylon’s Celery Green spray paint.  The blue was from the wall paint we used in her room (I think it’s Behr’s Ionic Sky) and the pink is actually from one of those little acrylic paint bottles that costs $1 at the craft store.  If you wanted to use spray paint, Krylon’s Watermelon is a close match.  I used that color to spray the big “A” over the table–that used to be celery green.

Once I added some knick knacks to the table, the look was done.  I moved the multi-colored fabric strip shade to her nightstand as it competed too much with the table.  You’ll see it soon enough when I reveal her updated room.

I just noticed that her cord cover is missing…it must have gone with the other lamp.  Oh, well, that’s how we roll–there’s always SOMETHING that needs fixing up!

I’ve loved all the “lives” of this little table and don’t doubt she’ll get another makeover or two before my girl grows up and moves out.  The moral of the story is:  don’t be afraid to change things around every so often.  Paint is cheap!

Stay tuned for more–the room will be done (again) soon.   Thanks for stopping by!

Festive Fourth of July Picnic

We went to my friend Andrea’s house for a wonderful Memorial Day picnic, and I wanted to share the photos with you before the Fourth of July, because the red, white, and blue theme is perfect for every patriotic event!

I loved the burlap that she used to cover her dining room table, and the “America” banner on the front added a pop of color.

We didn’t have ALL the food on the table at this point, and some of it was in the kitchen, but we decided to keep the food inside to minimize flies.  I used an idea I saw on Pinterest to put the fruit salad in a covered jar–that way if you are serving food outside, the flies still can’t get in!

I love the way Andrea stacked up old soda crates to hold condiments and salt and pepper.  I have a bunch in my son’s room to hold his Legos; maybe I should borrow them for my next picnic?

The eagle, the straw hat, the copy of the Declaration of Independence…I love all the details!

Even the chandelier gets decorated for the holiday, with red, white and blue paper stars and lanterns.

Andrea took a simple boxwood wreath and jazzed it up with the Declaration of Independence and some flags.

And take a look at what she did over the wreath, with the eagle and the old flag draped around it…

Dessert–the best part!  Hot Tamales, Twizzlers, Three Musketeers, and Crunch bars in apothecary jars create a red, white, and blue display.  Paper flags dress up easy cupcakes made from a box.

Beautiful vintage ephemera on the hall entry table…

The bar was open for the grownups, and the kids enjoyed a bottomless cooler of ice cold Cokes (in glass bottles) on the bunting-draped porch.  Coke in glass bottles is my kids’ favorite junk food treat.  Not surprisingly, this was about the time my children asked me if they could live with Andrea! :)

Even the flowers in the backyard were decorated for the holiday…

While the grown-ups played a cutthroat cornhole tournament, the kids threw water balloons (red, white, and blue, of course) at each other to cool off.  As night fell, Andrea pulled out a bucket of glow necklaces and whip-its to keep them occupied for awhile longer, while we all sat around and enjoyed some adult conversation.  It was a perfect day!

As we celebrate our nation’s birthday, I am so thankful for the freedom that we enjoy, and for the brave men and women (like my husband and all of the guys at this picnic!) who fight to protect it.  Happy Independence Day!

Thanks for stopping by!

Easter Mantel Decor

Easter is right around the corner and everyone in my house is very excited. My 3-year old daughter asks me every day “Is the Easter Bunny is coming TODAY?! “

Easter is among my favorite holidays. I love the pastel decor, the celebration of resurrection and new life and the fresh, easter dresses (!) and the happy, “spring” feeling that comes at this time of year.

I don’t usually do much to my mantel, and having a new house it took a bit of thought to decide how to decorate my new (very white) mantel/fireplace. My house was painted all white (as you have seen in my kitchen HERE and my daughter’s room HERE) so I decorate with neutrals and texture to make it more interesting. Light blue is my favorite color,  so going that route was kind of an easy choice.

I made the EASTER sign out of a wooden plaque from Michael’s and traced some letters, then painted them. My daughter and I painted some kraft paper eggs light blue together, and Christy sent me the light blue cut-out of a bunny which I backed with scrapbook paper and framed.

This little green guy came from Pier One. Don’t they have the best Easter decorations every year?

I hope its feeling very spring-like where you are, I am SO happy it is starting to warm up here.

Here is a link to our Spring Giveaway for a cute monogrammed Burlap Tote!

And, did you see our new header? Yes, that’s us Magnolia Lane girls! Its a preview from our recent photo session with Jessica Oatman, we can’t wait to reveal our whole new look very soon.

Master Bathroom Reveal–Finally!

I kicked it into gear right around Christmas and got to work on the master bathroom–because of course I didn’t have anything better to do but paint (ie bake, wrap presents, decorate the house, write Christmas cards…).  I just couldn’t live with the green another minute, though!  I have since painted the master bedroom and sitting area the same color, but they’re still being decorated and aren’t ready for public consumption yet.  In the meantime, welcome to our new and improved master bathroom!

I actually took the above picture while standing in the bathtub.  As is true of most bathrooms, it’s laid out in a way that makes one panoramic shot virtually impossible.  I tried to get some good angles to show you what we’ve done.

The below shot is taken from the hallway where you enter the bathroom.  The WC is off to the left in a separate room, but I figured you really didn’t need to see that, and the shower stall and soaking tub are to the right.  The double vanity is to the left, obviously.

I decided not to paint the cabinets, which is odd for me since I love white cabinets.  However, my paint color (Pebble Beach by Benjamin Moore) is a very light blue-gray, and it goes really well with the brown cabinets.  I also opted to keep the existing lighting fixtures, which are an antiqued bronze/gold color, and found this chandelier on Craigslist to keep the theme going:

Just a note on chandeliers–I personally think they add a ton to a home’s resale value, but they’re pretty expensive when you buy them new (even at Lowe’s and Home Depot!).  I comb Craigslist on a regular basis and have found some real steals.  From my screened porch chandelier that I spent $20 on (here) and spray painted white, to the Ballard Designs Grande Claire that I found for my dining room and paid $100 for, to this beauty (from the same guy I bought the Grande Claire from), you can really make your home more beautiful, even if you’re on a budget.  While I hang my own chandeliers, I know that some of you  might not be comfortable working with electricity.  It’s actually pretty simple once you know what to do.  I would recommend that you hire an electrician to change your first light fixture for you, and make sure that he explains each step to you.  Take pictures if you need to!  There are also great online tutorials.  I am at the point now where I can rewire the chandelier to fix non-functioning arms, and also lengthen the electrical cord and chain when I need more length than the previous owner did.  In this case, the chandelier was way too big to hang in the exact place where my flush-mounted light was, because the door to the WC would have bumped into it.  Instead of moving the box, which is a pain and probably something I’m not qualified to do :) , I just lengthened the cord and chain and swagged the chandelier over to the bathtub.  I’m sure it would make for a nice, luxurious soak with a chandy overhead, but of course I haven’t done that yet!

Large chandeliers look better with a ceiling medallion in place, and this one came along with the light fixture.  I painted it Pebble Beach and screwed it in place, although some of them are light enough that the canopy of the chandelier holds them up.

While we didn’t do much more than paint and add the chandelier in here to change things around, our one major project was to add shelves on the wall behind the sinks.  We used an Ikea Billy bookcase as our starting point, and just added trim and molding to make it look like a built in.  Kate at Centsational Girl has a great tutorial on how to do it here.  We had to modify things a bit, because there’s a heating register under our Billy, but we took it slow and just figured it out as we went.  Thank goodness for spackle and caulk!  What was wasted space is now much more functional, and beautiful.

My one remaining goal for this room is to pull down the huge mirror that the builder put in and instead install two separate mirrors over each sink, but there are other things in the house that are going to have to happen first.  I can live with it in the meantime.  I’m also considering changing out the cabinet and drawer knobs for crystal ones, but I’ll wait until I find just the right ones.

I had fun styling the room.  Most of it is either flea market, thrift store, or just old stuff that was my mom’s.  I added a shelf over the bathtub to display some of my old glass bottles and some bath accessories.  The B monogram in the silver frame is actually vinyl, applied directly to the wall, with the empty frame hung over it.  I borrowed that great idea from my very creative friend, Andrea.

I love my old gravy boat that’s losing its silverplate.  I found it at a thrift store and put it to work holding bath salts.

Here are a few other shots showing you how I used old silver and crystal pieces to dress up boring bathroom items:

I’ll leave you with a shot of Amy’s Christmas present to me:  words to live by, from Coco Chanel:

Back from Hibernation

Hi all, I am back from my winter hibernation. After some much needed R & R, the warmer weather has definitely gotten me motivate to begin some spring cleaning, yard work and of course decorating.  I promise to share all my fresh spring projects here at 11 Magnolia Lane.

As you know I started working on my boys bathroom last month and I am thrilled to share….it is finally complete (well almost:)
I still need to frost their medicine cabinet mirror and possibly hang a new light fixture.   I couldn’t wait a day longer so I wanted to share my “almost complete” boys nautical bathroom.

These adorable metal stars came from my sister-in-law Holly.  They were the perfect accent for that navy blue wall.

The boy’s grandfather is a ferry boat captain in Hilton Head, S.C.  It really makes their room extra special and very nautical.

I love this basket from Home Goods!!

I trimmed out the mirror with white molding- it made a huge difference.  You can see the before shot on my Nautical Valance post.

Happy sailing!
