Vinyl House Number Giveaway (because you asked for it!)

Good morning!  A few weeks ago, I took an unscientific poll on Facebook:  would you like me to do a giveaway of vinyl house numbers, similar to what I have on my front door?  The answer was pretty overwhelming, and of course it was YES!

Giveaway--vinyl house numbers from 11 Magnolia Lane

Mine have been on my door for almost two years and look great still.  If you change your mind, warming the vinyl with a hair dryer before slowly peeling it off works really well.  I’ll probably have to take mine off to paint the front door (when it warms up!), but then I’ll put another set on–I get so many compliments on them!

They look good at Thanksgiving:

And at Christmas:

Christmas front porch at 11 Magnolia Lane

In the autumn:

Fall front door at 11 Magnolia LaneReally any time of the year!

The porch decor may change with the seasons, but the numbers stay the same!

Here are the details of the giveaway:  it will run until Monday, March 11th, at noon central time.  If you win, I’ll make you a set of custom house numbers in white or black, similar to the style on my door (don’t stress me out by asking for fancy scrolly cursive or stuff like that–mkay?  I’m strictly an amateur here!).  I’ll have you measure to make sure they’re just the right size for your door.  I might ask you to email us a picture when you put them up, so we can see how cute they are!

You can enter up to four times, by leaving up to four comments below.  Leave a comment if  you:

  • are an email subscriber (or sign up to be one–see the box at the right)
  • follow us on Facebook (box on right or below)
  • follow us on Pinterest or Twitter (box on right or below)
  • share the giveaway by pinning it, tweeting it, or sharing it on Facebook or your blog

That’s it–easy!  Good luck to all of you, and thanks for stopping by!

Reader Feature: Deborah’s Black & White Laundry Room Redo

Today I thought I’d do something a little bit different and show you some photos that one of our readers sent me through Facebook.  Deborah G. and her family just moved into their home in July, so she has been doing a great job of getting settled and decorated.  She sent me pictures of several of her rooms, and they’re all wonderful, but today I really want to focus on her black and white laundry room (maybe I’ll show y’all the other ones in a separate post, or on Facebook).

Black and white laundry room

Deborah mentioned when she sent me the pictures that she has used several of my rooms for inspiration, and had fun hunting down similar pieces to the ones I used.  I told her that my mother always said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and after all, isn’t that why we show our rooms to the world on this blog–so you can pick and choose which ideas work in your home?!  Here’s the link to my laundry room if you want to compare.

Black and white laundry room

I love that she used black and white–my favorite color combo–and I think it really gives the room a great vintage look.  Check out the fabric covering the white wire shelving–that’s a table runner she found at Hobby Lobby.  I also love how she added the black infinity-style shelves below, to give herself extra shelf space for cleaning rags and laundry supplies.  The “lost socks” that are clothespinned on the shelf are a great idea–I never know what to do with mine while they’re searching for their mates!

Even the puppy has her own basket of toys in a corner on the floor, and a cozy bed.  Since my cat eats and sleeps in our laundry room, this makes perfect sense to me, but her pets have a lot more room than mine does!

Deborah is fortunate to have extra shelving in the corner, and she has done a great job of organizing the area with more black and white.  See the ribbon she wove through the white wire shelving?  What a great way to make contractor-grade shelving look custom!

Laundry room storage at 11 Magnolia LaneI think I can see a decoupaged light switch cover on the edge of the photo–that’s a quick and easy way to customize a room, too.  Here’s the post that tells you how to do it.

I think this cool black tree on the wall must be vinyl, but I forgot to ask.  Deborah, if it’s something different, please leave us a comment below to let us know!

Black vinyl tree in laundry room

I think the room has come together beautifully, and I’m guessing that it makes laundry *almost* a pleasure to do!  Deborah, thank you for letting me share your room with everyone!

Thanks for stopping by~

Easy Halloween Chalkboard using Martha Stewart Craft Paints and Stencils

Last month I received the most amazing surprise on my doorstep!  It was from Martha Stewart Crafts and it was filled with the most inspiring paints, stencils, tools and ideas.

Opening this box felt like Christmas morning!  Thanks, Martha!

I just couldn’t wait to dive in.  Limiting myself to one project was nearly impossible, especially when the theme for this project was Halloween.   This is what I came up with– I hope you love my Halloween Inspired Chalkboard using only Martha Stewart Crafts!

This was my first project using  Martha Stewart Crafts Chalkboard Paint in the fabulous shade of grey.  I wanted to create a spooky entryway and I loved the idea of writing a Halloween message for all my fall guests to see.    I also loved the idea of a grey chalkboard rather than the typical black.  I already had two thrift store art frames in my basement that I wanted to re-purpose, so I was off to a quick start.

These frames were pretty old, so I did have to cover them with black spray paint prior to adding the chalk paint.  I used spray paint designed for trucks (called Bed Liner).  I think that stuff is amazing. You don’t have to sand or worry about imperfections as the thick adhesive coating covers every little scratch, ding and chip.  I love that it has a hint of sparkle and adds a ton of texture to the frame.  It was the perfect fix to this imperfect frame.

Adding the Martha Stewart Crafts Chalk Paint was simple.  This particular frame had plastic, rather than glass, and it was a bit dusty from being the basement.  I simply cleaned the plastic with a glass cleaner.  Once dry, I evenly applied the chalk paint with one of the brushes Martha Stewart Crafts provided.  It took 3 coats, but I love the result and the color.

Once painted, I was ready to add a spooky verse or poem.  I have the WORST handwriting, so I knew I could not do this part of the project freehand.  I was grateful to find some transfer paper in the wonderful box of Martha goodies.    I already had a Halloween sign, and I personally love the font styling so I felt it would be perfect to copy onto my new chalkboard.  My kids also love this sign as it tells you to “smell my feet.”

What little boy would not giggle over that kind of talk?

Transfer Paper allows you to copy images and fonts perfectly from one sign onto another.

I have never used transfer paper before and I am sad to say I have wasted countless hours erasing, re-writing and erasing.  Martha Stewart Crafts Transfer Paper is amazing!!  It made this part of the project so quick, easy and stress free.  I didn’t have to worry about my atrocious hand writing as I could simply copy and paste.

You can see how the transfer paper left faint markings on the board, now all I have to do is go back and fill it in with chalk.

I love the wording on the frame, but it only took up a small portion and didn’t look like I wanted it to.  I  needed to come up with a plan “B” and fast.  Back to the box of goodies Martha sent me.  What would fill up the frame without taking away from the wording?  Check out this great rick-rack/chevron stencil I found:

Here is the final product.  I embellished the board with a handmade burlap flag banner and some creepy spiders, and I LOVE the end result.

I have to point out those bat stenciled goblets and gold pumpkins at the bottom of my photo.  I told you that I would not be able to stop at one project:).  I absolutely loved working with the Martha Stewart Crafts and the Sticker Stencils were no exception.

Sticker Stencils by Martha Stewart Crafts makes stenciling EASY!!

The sticker stencils are AMAZING~

These goblets and bottle took me less than 30 minutes to create and it cost me less than $6.00.   Each glass cost $1.00 at my local dollar store.  That cool bottle was store bought sparkling lemonade that I found at HomeGoods for approximately $2.00.  I served the lemonade at my fabulous 30-Something Fashionista Party (check it out here) and saved the bottle because of that super cool top.  I think the goblets and bottle combined would make a fantastic hostess gift set.  Maybe include a cool Halloween inspired cocktail recipe like my Spooky Orange Creamsicle Cocktail.

{Click HERE for printable recipe}

Lastly, I painted some small pumpkins using Martha Stewart Crafts Gilding Paint in silver and gold.  I have to say, that stuff is powerful and gives you a lot of bang for your buck.  I barely used anything and covered 6 small pumpkins.  I also love the metallic colors which will carry over to my fall dining room tablescape this Thanksgiving.

Look for these on my Thanksgiving tablescape!

I hope you enjoyed seeing all the wonderful things that Martha Stewart Crafts made possible for me this Halloween.  Please note that I received these products via The Blueprint Social (www.theblueprintsocial.com) for this post, however, the opinions are 100% my own, please find my post disclosure HERE  I sure enjoyed this campaign and want to thank Plaid, Blueprint Social and Martha Stewart Crafts for this opportunity.

For more great projects please visit Martha Stewart Crafts on FACEBOOK, TWITTER AND PINTEREST.

Amy will be back tonight to announce the winner of the Organizing Giveaway!

My Pink & Silver Closet Reveal–Organized Bliss!

Last weekend was our 17th wedding anniversary.  I got married as an infant, I promise you!  We went out to a trendy restaurant in East Nashville to celebrate (so you know we were out of place with all the young hipsters :) ), and then on Sunday, I decided to celebrate by painting my closet!  My husband just rolls his eyes–he knows that’s as fun for me as playing a round of golf is for him.

We are fortunate to have his-and-hers walk-in closets in our room; this is the first time we haven’t had to share a closet.  It probably works out well for my husband, because even though his is a tiny bit smaller, he doesn’t have to worry about all my stuff crowding him out! When we first moved in, I was having a hard time making the closet work.  Finally, I realized the fault was my own–I had too many clothes!  I did a huge purge and took bagfuls to Goodwill.  There were so many things that were nice but I just never got around to wearing.  Why not bless someone else with it?  And then there’s room for MORE!  Never mind, I didn’t really mean that–well, sort of. If you promise not to hold it against me, I will let you look at the disorganized “before”:

I know, it burns, doesn’t it?! Everything worked so much better once I got rid of some things.  I love all those gorgeous closets on Pinterest–the ones with accessory islands, chaise lounges, refrigerators, swimming pools, etc.–but that’s not real life for most of us.  And I am perfectly content with my life, and my closet! I LOVE harlequin diamonds, and decided that I wanted to go with a pink and silver wall treatment to honor my love of all things girly and blingy (if that’s a word).  I’m going to do a separate post on how to paint harlequin diamonds, if you’ve never done it before.  It’s a bit tricky and time-consuming, but SO worth it in the end result.

My paint color was “Princess” from Valspar (from Lowe’s).  There was a $5 rebate on paint that weekend and while I intended to buy a can of pink paint from their “Oops” section, they only had quarts and I figured I’d need a gallon since I planned to paint the ceiling, too.  I used Martha Stewart’s glaze (from Home Depot) in Mercury, and while I’ll cover the process in more detail when I write the “diamonds post”, I used 1 part paint to 2 parts glaze to give a silvery sheen to the harlequin diamonds.  The last part of the painting process was to use a silver upholstery tack to embellish the diamonds.  I snagged those at Hobby Lobby. I painted the ceiling pink, too, to disguise a pop-up entrance to the attic, although I didn’t put any diamonds on the ceiling.  Here’s how the diamonds looked when I was finished (they’re very subtle):

After I reinstalled the shelving (yes, I had to take it out to paint), I moved on to the fun part, installing the chandelier.  I bought the Kristaller chandelier for $40 the last time I was at Ikea, and that’s what I hung in here.  Perfect! As I’ve mentioned before, I despise white wire shelving.  I ripped it out in my laundry room and my pantry, but since we know we’re moving in a few months, I just didn’t feel I could justify the expense of doing the same thing in my closet.  So I didn’t have to stare at SO much white wire, I used a couple of black lamp/chandelier cord covers to disguise the front of the shelves.  The little velcro closures made them fit like a charm.  Check them out in the “after” pictures…

While I’ve had my shoes stored in plastic Sterilite bins for years, I upgraded my labeling system with chalkboard labels.  I’ll write a separate post about them next since they were so easy but made such a big difference.  I’ve also set a strict limit for myself–I can only have as many shoes as will fit on the top shelf.  And in the shoe organizer (below).  That’s it.  REALLY.

I had so much extra space that I got to hang a gorgeous quatrefoil monogram in pink and gray from one of my favorite sites for free printables, For Chic Sake.  Thanks so much, girls!

They have several different color choices, by the way.  Here’s a close-up:

I also printed out their hanger tags {here}.  My daughter might get more use out of them, but they sure are fun!

I brought in my black and white mannequin to show off some jewelry.

A set of hooks that I snagged at the thrift store holds necklaces, or tote bags.

Another little shelf (also from the thrift store) holds scarves and pins.

By the way, I spray-painted the light switch plate metallic silver…I thought it would be a fun touch.

The big wicker trunk was my mom’s.  It holds my purses and tote bags; I just can’t make them look good when they’re out in the open!

The hat box on the floor holds–you guessed it–hats.  Go figure!

Here are a few last shots of the “After”.  I hope you love it as much as I do.  Oh, and keep reading at the bottom, because I’m going to let you in on a secret!

OK, in case you were wondering, not ALL of my clothes are black, white, and sequined.  However, wouldn’t it be easier if they all were?!  While I had fun staging the closet for the pictures, that’s not real life.  Here’s what it really looks like:

I might spray paint those natural-colored baskets silver.  What do you think?

Thanks for keeping it real with me, and thanks for stopping by!

Changing Up My Dining Room Chargers

Gold chargers ready for their makeover!!

Do you have a space in your home that you are avoiding due to a decorating dilemma?  Maybe you’re even feeling overwhelmed with the idea of trying to change it up?  I feel that way with my dining room.   When we moved here 5 years ago I had so much red decor.  Red drapes, red sofas, cherry floors, red pots …. red everything!!  As time has passed and we had a major flood that caused us to need a lot of repairs, I am moving on from my love of red in a very different direction.

My red and gold dining room in need of a mini makeover!

After flooding my entire main level and changing out our cherry hardwood floors to an ebony beech, I have been trying to change up my decor one room at a time.  I am drawn to the simplicity of classic black and white but have had a difficult time moving past all my existing decor. How do I change up my style without spending a fortune?

Some much needed inspiration as I change up my decorating style!! TheEntertainingHouse.com

I have been trying to come up with creative and inexpensive ways to change up my current style without getting overwhelmed.  One tip I can offer is to take it one small project or one room at a time.   Amy helped me jump-start this process in my dining room as she generously handed down some beautiful black and white houndstooth drapes she no longer needed.  They were actually hung in the model home for my neighborhood at one point so they were the perfect fit and a much better color selection than what I had originally chosen.   They were also FREE (thank you Amy!)

Gold chargers made the dining room look and feel a bit too formal but check out those houndstooth drapes!!

Another problem I have in my dining room is that I have gold accent overload.  I love gold and I think you can add bits and pieces of gold to every room but too much of anything is never a good thing.  I had gold chargers, gold mirrors, gold flatware (which I still love) and gold platters.  I needed to update the gold to something a bit more casual and hopefully brighten up the space at the same time.

Loving the black and white!

With new black and white drapes hanging, I decided to change up my gold chargers.  I already had the white spray paint so that was an easy and very inexpensive way to solve my red and gold decorating dilemma.

Vinyl # decals courtesy of Christy!!

Christy graciously offered to cut out some vinyl numbers for me with her awesome Silhouette cutter.  How lucky I am to have two very generous and creative women in my life!  Not only are they providing two key elements for my dining room up-date, they inspire me daily with all their decorating know-how.  I am excited to see my dining room transform, even if it is one piece at a time, and I am looking forward to entertaining in my new casual, yet classic, black and white dining room.

My dining room mini makeover is looking better and brighter in black & white

Happy Decorating!

Christy’s Powder Room Redo–Just Add Beadboard!

Drumroll, please, because this is my first room redo in a long time (since the kitchen photoshoot, I think)!  Let me first inform y’all that this is only Part 1 since the room isn’t quite done (are they ever?) but it’s good enough to show it off a little bit.

Our downstairs powder room was always too dark for me.  While the previous owners had done a pretty faux finish on the walls (gold tones over chocolate brown), the dark paint color combined with the limited light sucked all the light out of the room.  I like white, and light colors, so I knew the bathroom would need a redo at some point.

Here’s what the room originally looked like:

The gold leaf mirror was heavy and obviously very expensive, so I wanted to save that.  It was also my intention to leave the faucet, sink, and toilet intact, and maybe just change out the light fixture.

I HAD to use my flash in here even though that doesn’t give us a very pretty result, but the room was too dark to shoot otherwise.

Hubby headed out of town for six weeks for work, and as usually happens when he goes away, I decided this was the perfect time to start the project.  The kids could happily eat cereal and frozen pizza for dinner for a few days, right?

I started by giving the ceiling and the top half of the walls a coat of flat white paint (I just used the Ultra Pure White by Behr at Home Depot).  I was pleasantly surprised that it only took two coats to cover that brown, and I didn’t have to sand the walls as the texture of the faux finish was smooth.

I will tell you that even with just the top half of the walls painted, the transformation was immediate.  The light was fantastic, even though there’s only one vanity light over the sink and no overhead light).  I knew I’d made the right decision!

Our last house, in North Carolina, had white beadboard in the bathroom, and I loved the cottage-y feel of it.  I also like the fact that it was taller than the standard 32″ and 36″ installations.  I decided to cut my bead board to 48″ high.  I bought the long packages (they’re 96″ tall) and cut them in half on my miter saw.  I still don’t have a table saw…soon!

Installing the beadboard was actually pretty easy.  I did use construction adhesive on the back of the panels and my brad nailer to secure the panels in place once I’d positioned them on the wall.  I’ve always been a little scared of my nail gun (correction: scared of my air compressor and the LOUD noises it makes!) and this project forced me to learn to use it by myself since Chris wasn’t around to help me.   The brad nailer made the job about a million times easier.

Because my house is neither trim NOR square, as I discovered when building shelves in my pantry (read about that HERE), the panels were a little wonky at the corners.  I did the best I could, and figured caulk and paint would help as I finished the project.  I had some screen trim left from my pantry shelves and put a piece of that in two of the corners to cover up some small gaps.  I was right, when I was done caulking and painting it was impossible to tell.

I wasn’t sure how I’d manage to install the beadboard around the toilet and the sink.  I lucked out with the toilet as my water pipes come up from the floor (in some of our houses they come through the wall) so I didn’t have to remove the toilet or the tank; however, I did have to remove the pedestal sink to put the beadboard behind it.  THAT was fun–not!  Plumbing work always involves standing on your head while screwing or unscrewing connections with the perilous possibility of dropping porcelain and having to buy a new one.  But, I persevered and got that sucker off the wall.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but getting it back into place was going to be more work than removing it! :)

Here we are with no sink!

“Measure twice, cut once” takes on new meaning when you’re measuring for pipe openings.  This was also a chance to use that hole-cutter-attachment thingy for my drill that I’d always wondered about.  How nice and easy it made the job!  Oh, and you can see the two holes in the wall where the toggle bolts for the sink attach…I had to buy new ones as the old ones fell into the wall when I removed the sink.  I wouldn’t have thought of that ahead of time!

Since the bead board was 48″ high, I also had to cut openings for the light switch and outlet.  I think a jig saw would have been the appropriate tool here, but I don’t have one, so I used a utility knife to saw away at the back of the beadboard and make the openings.  Don’t forget to use outlet spacers whenever you’re adding something like bead board or board and batten to a wall; that way your switches and outlets won’t look sunken into the wall.

Finally, I had to trim the top of the beadboard.  I used pine finger joint board and cove molding to create the top trim and glued and nailed them into place.  The finger joint pieces are sold in 1″ x 2″ x 8′ sections and then I cut them with my miter saw.  The cove molding went underneath to create a smooth transition between the finger joint board and the bead board.  The cove molding was the only thing that wasn’t pre-primed, but two coats of paint still covered everything.  Oh, and I did not remove my baseboards.  The bottom of the bead board sat right on top of my baseboards and I just piped in a line of caulk for a smooth transition.

The last step in the process (before decorating–yeah!) was to give all the beadboard and trim two coats of Ultra Pure White in semi-gloss finish.  Bead board is a little tricky to paint, but I found that a 3″ wide brush worked best with a 1-1/2″ angled brush for corners.

I spray painted the big heavy mirror black and then realized that hanging it would be tricky with the finger joint board projecting out from the wall.  I solved that problem by using a couple of wood scraps and drywall anchors to allow me to hang the mirror away from the wall.  Here’s the picture from the side of the mirror–maybe it will make more sense than my description.

And here’s the now-black mirror, from the front:

I did take down the old 3-bulb light fixture and replaced it with a chrome fixture to keep things consistent.  Since I bought the new one off Craigslist and sold the old one on Craigslist (both for $30), I was pretty pleased with myself.

As is true with all of my DIY projects, it took longer than I thought it would, but I’m so glad I did it!  The last step is going to be to do something on the top half of the wall, but I’m not sure yet if I want to wallpaper (black and white toile, anyone?) or maybe paint a black and white awning stripe or harlequin diamond pattern.  Let me know if you have any input!

Here are a few “after” shots, always my favorite part!

I bought the step stool at a garage sale years ago for $1 and decoupaged toile paper onto the top and trimmed it with ribbon.

The brown telephone stand is also from a yard sale (recurring theme?) and holds my back issues of Romantic Homes magazine and a variety of powder room essentials.

Why not use a hotel ware ice bucket to store that extra roll of tp?!

I hope you like how it turned out.  Now, stay tuned for Part 2!

Thanks for stopping by.

Spring on the Porch

Just popping in to share some pictures of my front porch updated for Spring…now almost summer!

We have been looking forward to warm weather to be able to use this space as living space. Our home sits on the edge of a sand quarry turned fresh-water lake, so we love our view. We have waited all winter long to be able to really enjoy it.

I ordered new cushions from HERE (Susan kindly did a giveaway with us last fall) and I spent the winter trying to decide which colors and patterns I should get. I love how the green and black look against our house, and the quality of the cushions is great.

We hung the ferns up recently and I am hopeful they will survive the winds here on the coast. So far, so good.

Now, I think its time to plan a party to enjoy this space!

Thanks for stopping by~

A Space of my Own

I have been hard at work polishing up several areas of my home, including my Office (or as some would say, my “Mom Cave”). We converted this space from a playroom (this would be a great before and after, you wouldn’t believe it! I will have to dig for a picture) into my home office two years ago as I have a graphic design business specializing in wedding and event invitations. I was SO happy when it was finally done, as I said this is the only space in the house that is ALL MINE! MINE! MINE!

The majority of my working, crafting and blogging is done here. I honestly spend most of my time in here. Almost everything is from IKEA. I really liked the similar craft desk from Pottery Barn, but didn’t have the budget for it so I made my own from IKEA with 3 Expedit shelves and 2 IKEA table tops–it was probably less then $250 when it was all said and done. I have a TON of work space on the top which comes in handy when I am cutting, taping and assembling invitations. I also have a ton of storage for all my papers and supplies below.

The armoire behind the desk came into our marriage with my husband (he used it to store his clothes in his closet-less city bachelor apartment), and I couldn’t wait to make it pretty with some new white paint. Its now my gift wrap (and business packaging) storage. My favorite part is the chalkboard door where I can keep a running list of what I need to work on so I don’t get too sidetracked reading blogs! (which happens all too regularly!)

I am in the process of redoing a chair for the space…right now I have a very large (very comfortable) chair from our living room but its not exactly the right scale, is it? I will post on my new desk chair as soon as I finish pulling out the 5000 staples from the old upholstery–it might be awhile. {I do know its going to have leopard fabric though, as I truly believe every room needs at least one touch of an animal print, and it works with the beige and black color scheme}

And, don’t you love the houndstooth curtains? (Sorry, I don’t have a great picture I just realized) but anyway, my girlfriend Tracey got them from a model home, and they were so wide we were able to cut them in half and each get a pair out of them. Nice friend!

I use these little buckets and towel bar (from the kitchen section in IKEA) to keep all sorts of things that pile up on the desk at arm’s reach.

As a Designer, I am BIG on words and letters…these letters are my favorite part of the room. I just some sprayed Hobby Lobby letters and I covered a cheap bulletin board with fabric for an inspiration board. I think the “word” makes the room a lot more interesting.

I am still tweaking this space, but its come a long way in a few weeks. I went ahead and shared it today to join Delightful Order’s Craft Room link up. I find DaNita’s organizational skills to be awe inspiring! Here is “my space” again…

Model Home Inspiration

Yesterday Terry and I (along with our friend Trinity) stopped off at a Model Home in our area. Its been awhile since I had been in one, but this one was an amazing source of decorating ideas. We were “oohing” and “ahhing” and had our I-phone cameras snapping away throughout our visit.

Terry is going to have to follow-up with a “part two” post, she has some pictures I didn’t take especially of some very pretty (and easy to copy) window treatments which are pictured below. Model homes usually have a color scheme throughout and the Designers have a “theme family” (ages, number of kids etc.) in mind. This home was rich in vibrant reds, beige and black–jazzed up with some fun animals prints. I am more of a “light color” person (really, my whole house could be white, white, white if I didn’t have messy children) but I still found many design ideas I loved.

Here is some inspiration ideas from the home I thought I would share.

Game Table In the Basement (Cute Chairs!)

A cool room for a guest or teenage girl (love the wall treatment)

I could (may have to...) make this mirror

Love this pillow, two great things--animal print WITH a ruffle

Can you see the adorable ruffle on this curtain in Red?

Loving the black vanity and Gorgeous wallpaper!

(See the girls also admiring this pretty room?) And…this is the window treatment that we checked out EXACTLY how they did it (stay tuned for part 2!)

More on this window treatment to follow...

Had to get a close up of this wallpaper...love it.

A simple bulletin board idea...

And here is Terry, who happens to be stylishly sporting the same colors as the Model Home!

And then, off we went for our girl’s lunch after our detour through this inspiring home. Hmm…this could EASILY become a habit! All in the name of Blogging, right?

Snow Day #3–Reorganizing the Kitchen (Still)

We’re in North Carolina, and we were hit on Monday (and Tuesday) with snow and then a bit of ice to top it off.  Now, I’m from Maryland, and while that’s not exactly the frozen tundra, I do remember that it took more than this for them to close school all week.  ‘Cause that’s what we’re looking at so far.  The kids are home today, and they’ve already called a 2-hour delayed opening tomorrow.  So they’ll have a full day Friday, and then a three-day weekend.

Here we are, all snowed in. The house is looming up in front of you because my 7-year-old took the picture from her lower perspective, but I thought she did a pretty good job anyway!

Now, I really like my children, and I even homeschool my son (and probably my daughter next year, because I’m a glutton for punishment!), but this has been a long week!  I’ve taught them how to play Rummikub, we’ve read several books, we’ve been sledding, we’ve been walked by the puppy walked the puppy, and we’ve watched Barbie: A Fashion Fairytale at least three times (my son wants you to know that he was in NO WAY involved in the watching of the Barbie movie, not even once).  I’ve also reorganized the computer armoire, where I keep my homeschooling supplies and books; the armoire in the kids’ loft, which mostly contains arts and crafts supplies and games; and the cabinet under the stairs, which sounds very Harry Potter but really just holds all of my cleaning supplies.  I even became desperate enough to consider cleaning out the Tupperware cabinet in my kitchen, but I’ll wait until cocktail hour for that!

One thing that I needed to organize was my glass-fronted cabinet in my kitchen.  The dishes that we use every single day are in here, and sometimes it gets a little cluttered, so what better time to tackle it?  Since most of my dishes are white, with a little black and pale green thrown in, that’s what I went with.  Here’s the little reveal (I say little because this is just one small space, so it’s not a big reveal).  Oh, and I’m still getting the hang of wordpress, and likely will be for the next few decades, so if you want to see the picture close-up, just click on it.

Green, white, and black--my favorites!

I found this set of canisters at TJ Maxx a few years ago.  They have held flour, sugar, and coffee beans in the past, but I switched to larger glass canisters for my baking supplies (I needed a wider mouth for scooping), so right now they’re purely decorative, and filled with faux limes.

These cool “B” knobs are from Hobby Lobby.  I bought them on sale and they were only about $1.50 apiece.  I am a firm believer in the “you can never have enough monograms” rule of decorating, so you will see lots of B’s throughout my house!

I had to include a close up of this awesome bacon platter that my sister-in-law, Jill, made me for Christmas.  Doesn’t everyone need a bacon plate?  She’s really talented at painting pottery, and I’m always happy to be the recipient of her artistic genius.

OK, this is a bit of an ADHD moment, because this is NOT my cabinet, it’s the top of my refrigerator.  But I had to show you the B plate that Jill made me for last Christmas.  Should she start a business, or what?

…And here’s the gratuitous puppy (and girl) picture of the day.  This is the reason that my entire kitchen can’t be photographed–too much puppy paraphernalia!

Thanks for stopping by, and let me know what you’re organizing on your snow days!
