The best part of waking up…

Can you hear that jingle in your head? “The best part of waking up is Folgers in your cup!” Does anything say ‘coffee’ more then that? Its classic! We are so happy to partner with Folgers today to talk about how much we love our coffee and announce their campaign for a new jingle {hang on for information about that}.

Anyway, as I {we} write about quite a bit here, I {we} love to entertain and especially have houseguests. While having weekend guests gives us the excuse to fix a nice meal and have a glass or two of wine and catch up with our friends over dinner, with overnight guests the next morning is also such a nice relaxing time.

In our former home we’d wake up and sit on the front porch with our friends or family, drinking coffee and catching up before starting our adventures. Even in winter we just brought out the blankets and of course, tons of hot coffee. In our new house we have a pretty, private backyard and we’ve been really enjoying how peaceful it is in the mornings.

I put together this little breakfast for some guests the other day, it was the perfect time to relax and reconnect over a simple breakfast and coffee. We sat outside, enjoyed a nice spring day and listened to some uplifting music and it day started off perfectly. It really was the best part of waking up!

These yummy, easy mini-frittatas were from Terry. She served them recently at her son’s baptism and they were so good, I immediately made them again. We’ll be back with the recipe soon. They are perfect for breakfast with fresh fruit and some blueberry muffins, and coffee of course!

So now that we’re all thinking about coffee and I have the Folgers jingle running through your head, I can tell you that Folgers is sponsoring a contest to find a new spin on the famous jingle. Spring Lucketts Recap

This post was written yesterday before news of Oklahoma came in, our thoughts, hearts and prayers go out to all who were impacted by the storms yesterday.

I know it’s not really that much fun to read about a place you probably won’t ever visit, so for those of you who live far from the Virginia, I going to try to keep this post from being too much of a tourist t-shirt regarding Terry’s and my adventures at Lucketts this weekend. However, its such an experience to go, I’d be remiss not to share the highlights of the day.

Terry and I (and her 7 week old son!} donned our rain gear and headed out early Sunday morning to what has become the very well-known Lucketts Spring Sale. Due to obligations we couldn’t attend on Saturday, but figured even if it was picked over on the second day it would still be fun to see what was there. We got there just as the gates opened, well worth it as it got much more crowded toward noon.

There were a few things that struck me about the day. I didn’t buy very much. The sale is simply overwhelming–and of course that is meant in the very best way. Terry and I also decided later it was because we are conditioned to look for things as “befores” and since we enjoy the whole making over process, we aren’t likely to buy a piece once it has become an “after”. That isn’t too say there wasn’t so much temptation, the sale was filled with amazing, beautiful “afters” and enough inspiration to keep us busy with blog projects for a very long time!

My major takeaway from our outing is that it was amazing to see what we try to capture here on our blog come to fruition. We don’t believe you have to spend a lot of money, or buy something that is already perfect. If you love it, or see how you can make it so you will love it, it can be a perfect part of your home. There were so many unique, beautiful and inspirational objects for sale at Lucketts–objects that were reclaimed, remade, discovered and so “not” perfect but still so perfectly beautiful.

As DIY/Home bloggers and for those of you who read these types of blogs regularly things like chalk paint, chevron, patina, wire baskets, burlap, grain sacks, boxwood, iron chandeliers, galvanized metal, mason jars, milk crates, chippy paint, chalkboards {etc!} are part of our decor world. Lucketts is like all those wonderful things mixed together…jammed in tents and stacked up, beautiful items all jumbled together, one pretty and interesting thing after another. It struck me that the sale is representative of a significant shift in the thinking of how we love our homes, by filling them with things we can repurpose, personalize, make meaningful, and enjoy.

It was just a fantastic day. We were thrilled to have a few minutes to chat {we discussed those observations above} with Marian, AKA, Miss Mustard Seed and she is everything you have heard about, read about or envision. She is just as down to earth, friendly and sweet as you can imagine. Yes, her popular booth was pretty picked over by Sunday but it was still a treat to meet her in person.

So all in all, it was a fantastic day at Lucketts. I do hope many of you have the opportunity to go and I loved seeing the success that so many of the vendors are experiencing as this “vintage” industry grows and thrives.

And, in case you were wondering, these weren’t for sale but they do help you carry your heavy items to your car…and isn’t that just fabulous? They thought of everything.

Makeovers & Margaritas Girls’ Night

I was thinking back the other day about this really fun party I hosted several years ago. It was pre-11 Magnolia Lane so I shared it on my event design blog but never here. Since I had some pictures from it and thought I would run a quick recap for nostalgia’s sake if nothing else.

And since we featured Margaritas {my husband’s very famous margaritas…stay tuned for recipe!} I thought the timing was perfect timing with Cinco De Mayo just around the corner.

I have been to many, many “direct sales” home parties–you know, like Mary Kay, Thirty-One, Pampered Chef–and even hosted a few. Since I sometimes (but really not always, I promise) like to make things a little fancier then my guests would expect, I decided to jazz things up a bit when I hosted this Arbonne make-up party for my girlfriends.

We had so much fun playing with the make-up…check out this awesome display. By the end of the night we were all smoky-eyed and red-lipped beauties!

At the time, part of my business were the paper products–the labels etc. so I featured them prominently at this party. I own up to having had a habit of making my events a bit of a personal showcase for my design business

I made little drink stirrers along with some take home favors for the guests.

And, you may even recognize the letters on the “You Are Beautiful” banner from my Vintage Sign Tutorial last week {click to see how I repurposed them}.

This night was so much fun, I may have to do it again. Last year I hosted a Girls’ Night Out for Thirty-One Gifts along the same line, maybe I need to get another Girls’ Night in the plan again soon!?!

On to the FUN part! My husband’s Margaritas are simply the best drinks around {well along with his Martini’s {they are also HERE}}. I persuaded him to share his recipe–its very simple, no pre-packaged mix and these are so fresh and tasty. Having been a bartender, he describes things in “counts” for how long he pours–and warning: He is HEAVY HANDED!–so just change the portions/ratios according to how many you are making.

4 counts good, gold Tequila {vary by how strong you want the drink}

4 counts sour mix {we use Poe’s—do NOT use “sweet &” sour mix!}

2 counts good Triple Sec

3 counts Rose’s Lime Juice

Tons of fresh squeezed Lime juice.

We do the cold glasses rimmed with salt, because of course he’s a “professional” {in his former life LOL} but serve however you like.

Spring Front Porch in Greens and Burlap

At some point, I should publish a list of all my front porch posts, because there are quite a few. I LOVE to change things up on the porch for different holidays and seasons. After taking down my Valentine’s wreath after that holiday, it was time to decorate a porch in a way that would take me through until spring. Since we’re putting the house on the rental market in just a couple of weeks, I wanted things to look clean, crisp, and welcoming. Here’s what I came up with:

Last spring, I also used a combination of bright green and burlap; and you can read about that HERE. The green cushions I used last year were Goodwill purchases and did not survive the summer (too much sun fade), so that’s why you don’t see them again. This year, the green comes from florist’s moss, in the “B” on my door, and in the moss sphere in the urn. The “B” was SO easy to make–the tutorial is HERE–I just posted it last week. Amy posted the tutorial on the moss ball HERE and it was a little trickier because of the shape, but not by much.

The white urn was a Goodwill find, although the tag on the bottom says it was originally from Kirkland’s. I’ve been toying with spray painting it black. Any thoughts?

The house number porch pillows are an easy project–I just slipcovered existing pillows using the tutorial I posted HERE. The polka dot cushion is from one of my favorite Ebay stores–I buy all my outdoor pillows there, and the old window is from the Nashville flea market. The chandelier is from a yard sale.

I also planted some white violas in my two black urns–it’s still cold out, but it’s warm enough for them! I added sphagnum moss and tiny grapevine balls for visual interest.

The black wicker chairs are from a yard sale. I scored both of them for $5. They just got a new coat of black spray paint (I respray them pretty much every year) and they’re good to go for another season.

The plant stand is from Hobby Lobby, a few years ago. My little old wicker table finally died this winter, so I spray painted this guy black and put him out there to take its place. I need a little table to hold my coffee or wine (depending on the time of day while I watch the kids playing out front.

In the end, probably what made the biggest difference was that we trimmed all the bushes in the front and spread new black mulch. Well, my husband trimmed the bushes and spread new black mulch. I was busy doing something else (maybe hiding in my closet?).

Anyone need to rent a house in Nashville with a sweet front porch and a whole lot of chandeliers inside? Just give me a yell!

DIY Moss Letters–Bring a Burst of Spring to your Front Door!

I don’t know about you, but I have an almost pathological obsession with taking down my holiday decor. Today is February 15th, and the few red and pink Valentine’s Day items in my house go away TODAY! Yes, I have a hard time leaving my Christmas decorations up until New Year’s, but I force myself.

Since I’m taking down my decoupaged hugs and kisses XO wreath today (read about that HERE for next year), I needed something to replace it on my front door. And since it’s mid-February, for those of us here in Tennessee, it’s almost Spring. So, what better color than green for the front door?

Pottery Barn sells their moss letters for $79 a pop. Of course, theirs are LIVE moss, but even so, that’s a little steep for me. I completed this project for about $17, and that’s including the cost of a glue gun and hot glue sticks, which I already had on hand.

Here’s what I bought at Hobby Lobby:

The big wood letters are $12.99 at Hobby Lobby; I bought mine on a 50% off week. It’s 18″ high. The sheets of moss are $7.99, and I used my 40% off coupon. I also bought a roll of burlap ribbon there for $2.50, since I had just cut up the last of my old grain sack from the flea market.

Amy talks about covering a sphere with moss HERE, and I just followed her directions, which are basically cut the moss to fit, glue it to the form, and cut slits to make it lay flat. I copy all of her ideas eventually, anyway. Did y’all know we were college roommates? Sometimes I think we’re twins separated at birth because our taste is pretty much identical, but I digress…back to the moss! I think the moss is very easy to work with–it’s so forgiving since it doesn’t show the seams when you glue in a small scrap to fill in a spot. However, mark my words, it makes an absolutely gigantic mess! Be prepared to vacuum your counter, your floor, and yourself when you’re done! I only had half a package of moss when I started this project, and I ran out part way through. I hate when that happens!

Um, yes, I covered a sphere with moss and stuck it in an urn. Amy told me to! And doesn’t it look great?!

After an emergency stop at Hobby Lobby, where the manager knows me by name (it’s like when Norm used to walk into Cheers, if you’re old enough to remember that), I plugged in the glue gun again and finished up the project. Here’s what I wound up with:

Here are a couple of tips:

Run the moss around the edges of the letter. Mine covered all the unfinished wood. I guess to save a little on moss/glue/work, you could also spray paint your edges dark green, but I think this looks better.
Save all the tiny pieces you have left over from trimming the moss; you can glue that on your letter in any gaps you see and no one will be able to tell. Or, use it on the next project.
I used the burlap ribbon to dress things up a bit; however, the letter is actually hanging on a metal wreath hanger. The burlap hides it, though. I formed a bow through trial and error (there is NO method to my madness when it comes to bow-making) and secured it with florist wire). As an aside, I really, really like the burlap ribbon I bought at HobLob!

That’s it–easy! I’m probably going to put this letter on the front door and take the moss sphere and the urn out there, too. I already have a big wooden “B” on the old window hanging on my porch, and that would be redundant, so that’s going to go on the screened porch for awhile, and I’m going to hang a grapevine wreath in its place. Tricks to Ensure Your Guests Feel Welcome This Holiday Season

I am hosting Christmas at my home this year. My husband’s family will be traveling in from Syracuse, NY, and from Hilton Head, SC, to celebrate the season with us here in Virginia. I am so grateful they are willing to travel, as my husband and I simply will not. That probably sounds quite selfish, but we decided that while our children are young we want them to experience Christmas morning at home. I feel we are creating some amazing memories similar to the ones I grew up with, and that is just something I am not willing to compromise on.

With that said, I do realize it is a huge sacrifice for our family and friends to travel during the holiday season, and I really want to make them feel welcome. In order to ensure that our guests feel comfortable in my home over the holidays, I try to be sure they have everything they need during their stay. Here are some helpful hints and creative ways to welcome your guests this holiday season.

Bathrooms:

Fresh towels are a must. I try to have at least two towels per person, especially for our female guests. I use two towels daily, so extra towels are just something I wouldn’t want my guests to go without.

I personally love the Better Homes and Gardens Thick and Plush Towels from Walmart (yes, I did say Walmart!). They come in about 10 different colors, they are super inexpensive, and you can easily monogram them to give your bathroom a more custom look. Doesn’t the monogram make all the difference?

I love the pure white with the pale green monogram and stripe.

The white on white is pure luxury but the single letter makes it really down to earth and simple.

I hope to have His and Her guest robes hanging in my guest bathroom someday. Wouldn’t that be such a nice hotel touch?

Pottery Barn robes would be such a lovely touch when welcoming your guests.

I always have Q-tips, cotton balls, soap, a new toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner on hand. It is a busy time of year, so guests might forget to pack something.

I re-purposed grandmother’s mason jars to hold cotton balls and q-tips.

Bedrooms:

Fresh Sheets and lots of pillows are a must in my guest room. There is nothing like crawling into a comfy warm bed after a full day of traveling.

I also try to ensure I have photos displayed around the bedroom that reflect their family. It is like bringing a piece of their home into my home. For example, here is an amazing photo of my niece Chloe from her senior picture photo shoot. I have placed that in the bedroom where her parents are going to sleep this holiday. Isn’t she beautiful!?!

Kitchen:

I try to ensure that all dietary needs are met. As most of you know, I have a son who has a rare metabolic disorder, so when we travel we have to pack so much food to ensure he can eat along the way! I would hate for my guests to feel that they have to do the same, so I try to stock my fridge to ensure I have something for everyone. My niece is lactose intolerant so I will have soy and almond milk available for her. My nephew is peanut free so most of my baked goods will be peanut free. This is not always realistic, but I try my best to make sure everyone feels at home.

Lastly, I always set up a coffee station so my guests can brew a cup as soon as they wake up. I hate waiting for my much-needed cup of Joe in the AM! For this reason, I love the Keurig Brewing System. No one has to wait for a hot cup of coffee, cocoa or tea in the morning. You can simply brew the perfect cup of coffee whenever your heart desires.

Dining Room Makeover {BM Revere Pewter Paint}

It’s been 5 years in the making but every room on the main level of my house is finally painted- YAHOO!!! This is such a huge victory for me as I really hate painting. Well, that may not be entirely true as what I really hate is the prepping and taping. I know there are million gadgets out there that tell you that you don’t need to tape if you buy their products. Unfortunately that just doesn’t apply to me and my “get it done” personality. I am a born ‘rusher’, I start a project and I want it done as soon as I begin. This is not the best personality to have when it comes to DIY home improvement projects and that is why I must tape prior to painting:)

I hate taping but it is a necessity for my “get-it-done” personality!

My dining room is prepped and ready for some color!

Another reason it has taken me so long to paint my house is because I am afraid to commit. I have a huge fear over picking the wrong paint color. I am so thankful for my girlfriends as they have an amazing eye for color and help point me in the right direction. This time around, I painted outside of my beige comfort zone and tried a cooler shade of grey. Revere Pewter is an amazing Benjamin Moore color with a tiny hit of beige so it was the perfect compromise for me. It ties perfectly into the rest of my home and as you can see below, it works well with the Grant Beige painted in my formal living room which is right next door.

Adding some color to my dinning room inspired me to move some things around. Remember that mirror I had hanging above my buffet? I have since painted that with chalk paint and shifted it over to another wall. My husband and I placed an open white shelf where the mirror used to hang. I am sure this looks very familiar as Amy and Christy both have this exact shelf hanging in their home, I guess I felt left out and had to have one for myself! Doesn’t it look so much better?

New paint and open shelving really changes the look of my dinning room.

I actually stenciled this jar because I wanted to create a fall “Thankful” apothecary container this past November. I tried to write down reasons to be thankful daily and I would place them inside this jar. I have kept it out because I love the burnt red color of the leaves and I feel that I still have a ton to be thankful for this Christmas. It is a terrific reminder to remain thankful during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

This belonged to my beloved grandmother (aka: Nanie). She passed away last year at 103 years old. I love having bits and pieces of her memory scattered around my home especially at Christmas. This is one of my favorite holiday memories as Nanie would light the candles and it would magically spin around.

DIY Ruffled Burlap/Ticking Tree Skirt

One of my most treasured wedding gifts was from my Grandmother. She made my new husband and I our very first holiday decorations. It was such a clever gift since we were young and just starting out. We really didn’t have holiday decor, certainly nothing that matched. But, as the years have passed and our family has grown I have been wanting to update my holiday decor.

This year I decided to try making my own tree skirt using an old round tablecloth. I loved the red and white plaid table cloth as it was so I decided not to have ruffles go all the way up. I did want some ruffles and loved the idea of burlap since many of my ornaments are rustic. I then decided to add the ticking as the striping contrast pulls it all together.

Christmas Shelves

I have to be honest, it doesn’t feel exactly right to write about holiday decor and other lighter topics yet. My heart still just hurts from the events of Friday, I expect it will for awhile.

I was reminded in church yesterday that Jesus was born into a dark, dark world. The spirit of the holiday is to find Joy in Him despite the darkness, and not let evil overwhelm the celebration of the miracle that is truly Christmas.

We were already attempting a simpler Christmas even before the recent events in Connecticut. We’ll be traveling for the holiday, and this year I already felt that I needed to focus more on our family and less on striving for perfection in the decorations, the food, the perfectly wrapped gifts, etc. I also wanted to take time to enjoy it and be less overwhelmed then I admittedly have been in years prior when I owned a custom Christmas Card business and it was CRAZY at this time of year. I actually cut things like Christmas cards off my “To-Do” list, I am thinking in this era of Facebook and being a blogger most friends hear enough from me! It’s been easier then I thought to actually do less, and I am finding I am enjoying doing the small things more this season.

I have decorated a few “statement” parts of the house rather then trying for perfection everywhere. The first thing I did was decorate the open shelving in my kitchen, we built them in January so this was my first chance to inflict some holiday spirit on them!

The advantage of having a white kitchen is I can swap out my seasonal decor. The pops of red in honor of this time of year definitely stand out in the otherwise mostly plain white room.

On the lower desk area {which I don’t really use as a desk for whatever reason} I added the hot chocolate fixings per Terry’s inspiration HERE. The kids had a great time making their “To Go” hot drinks Saturday night before we surprised them with a trek to see the Holiday Light festival at our local oceanfront.

Note: we apparently picked the busiest night of the year and after an hour and a half of waiting in line in our car the kids voted on a Christmas movie at home in favor of returning on a less busy night, Oh well!

So, no fancy holiday mantels or Christmas trees here this year, my kids decorated both spaces and I am just leaving them just as they are {OK, maybe I have tweaked an ornament here or there }. In the meantime, its been just a blessing to be home, be with family and know that the best part of the season is still to come.
