Holiday Hot Cocoa Station

A couple of weekends ago I spent a few hours selling hot cocoa at the local Illumination Parade to benefit my children’s school.

Another volunteer and I working the cocoa stand to benefit our elementary school.

We are always trying to raise a little extra money to support our children, the amazing teachers and staff who work there.  It was truly and incredible experience as so many people came out to support our town and march in the parade.  Thousands of people lined the streets of old town Warrenton as local businesses, schools, clubs, bands and veterans walked or “floated” by.  I am not sure anyone expected such a huge turn especially in our small town but it created an unforgettable night filled with community spirit.

We sold three different flavors of hot chocolate that night and it inspired me to set up my very own “Hot Cocoa Station” in my house.  It allows my holiday visitors to help themselves and indulge in a cup of cocoa.  It’s an adorable holiday touch sitting on my dining room buffet.  My kids love it too!

Check out those vintage mason jars,  they were my grandmother’s and she filled these jars each and every summer with the bounty from her garden.  She was such an inspiration to me and now I get to think of her every time I walk into my dining room.  Cocoa anyone?

These vintage mason jars came from my Grandmother who canned everything leftover from her garden.

Here are some of the hot cocoa toppings we sold at our cocoa stand the other night at the parade.  The peppermint cocoa was the most popular as the candy cane melts in the hot cocoa and really gives it a minty taste- YUM!

Peppermint Cocoa:

  • Regular hot cocoa
  • Whipped Cream Topping
  • Red Sprinkles
  • Candy Cane

Teddy Bear Cocoa

  • Regular Hot Cocoa
  • Whipped Cream Topping
  • Teddy Gram Teddy Bear Gram Crackers
  • Cinnamon and Sugar Sprinkles

Dark Chocolate Cocoa

  • Regular Hot Cocoa
  • Whipped Topping
  • Chocolate Sauce drizzle
  • Chocolate Jimmies
  • A Square of Dark Chocolate on Top
Enjoy!

2012 A Season of Giving

While this series has been on our hearts and minds for the last few weeks, with all the excitement with kicking off holiday decorating, Christy’s magazine feature and my daughter’s birthday party December 1st snuck up on us.

We started this series last year, {read HERE} the concept being that each of the three of us –and we were thrilled some of our readers participated as well– made a commitment to give back and brighten someone’s day with a small kindness each day during the holiday season.

Terry originated this series for us. Her giving ‘quest’ last year led her from just small daily acts of kindness to discovering a local needy family desperate for household goods and christmas gifts for their children. Her effort resulted in her collecting donations, purchasing gifts and delivering to them to Social Services for 75 children in foster care who otherwise wouldn’t have received anything.

Now, that is the SPIRIT of the SEASON isn’t it?!?

Terry is already on the ball this year {despite being pregnant!}. She has already filled her truck with donations from kind friends, family and her church members for the children in her local Social Services foster program. She was thrilled to share with me two generous people had donated bikes this year! How awesome is that?

So, we officially started this on December 1st.  I spent that morning at church making gifts with the children. It was so heartwarming to hear their excited chatter as they made each gift, telling each other that this one is for “my mom” or “my friend”.  It really made me SO excited about starting our “Acts of Giving” initiative again this year.

So…here we go! This year we’ll be posting our efforts on Facebook so make sure you “like” us if you are interested in keeping up {and of course, keep tabs on all sorts of other juicy Magnolia Lane details we share there}. We would LOVE to hear your Random Acts of Kindness, so let us know if you are joining in by commenting away!

And, if we might request a first act of kindness… please make your first effort to share this quest. After all, can you imagine how much good could be done if the thousands {millions?} of blog readers joined with us this month?

Hope your holidays are off to a wonderful start!

{PS don’t forget to enter our giveaway while you are here for a $50 HOMEGOODS/TJ MAXX gift certificate. It’s our small way of thanking you all for your continued readership and support!}

Causes Close to Our Hearts, Galactosemia Foundation

I guess it is my turn to share my story and the cause so close to my heart.   I want to thank Amy for leading the charge and Christy for sharing her amazing story and cause.   I wish I could say that the words are freely flowing right now, but this is really difficult for me.  I think any time you have to open up about something personal and raw, it just makes your heart swell a bit.  My heart is overflowing this morning but I am grateful for this opportunity to share our story.

Our story begins 7 years ago with the birth of our first son.  He entered this world with his eyes wide open and I will never forget that moment.  In return he has opened our eyes to so much more in this world than I could have ever imagined. I am so grateful for his sweet soul, strong personality and for his courageous heart.

My Sweet Son, Gavin!

Gavin appeared normal as he had 10 fingers, 10 toes and did everything a newborn baby should do.  Thom and I were first-time parents and just enjoying the overwhelming experiences that come along with a new baby.  Once released from the hospital we headed home, where my mom was there to greet us.   It was a warm April day, and I remember sitting outside and marveling over our new baby boy.  It was a perfect moment!

I was one of those stubborn new moms that had to do everything myself.  I would–of course–breastfeed my baby (NO bottle feeding or pacifiers allowed!), I would change every diaper, and I would power through those tired moments like a champ.  Well, on Day 4 everything hit me and I needed to crash.  Thank goodness my mom was there, as she forced me to lie down and get some rest.  (Moms know best even when you don’t want to listen!)  It was the first day I had been able to sleep, that amazing hard sleep that your body just falls into.  Unfortunately it was short-lived as within an hour, we received a phone call from an amazing doctor at the University of Virginia (UVA) Medical Center.

That doctor who called is the Program Director for the Division of Pediatric Genetics at UVA Medical Center, and he is also considered Gavin’s Guardian Angel.  He was unable to contact anyone under our current health care so he had to call me at home.  Waking up to this phone call was scary, surreal and confusing.  He told me that my son tested positive for Galactosemia and we needed to take him to the hospital immediately.  He urged us not to do any research on the internet as it could be overwhelming but informed me that I needed to stop breastfeeding my son.  As you can imagine my world slowly began to crumble.  What is Galactosemia?  I had never heard of it before and why would he urge me to stop breastfeeding my baby–the best thing you can give your child?

As we began packing everything up,  I told my mom to go on my computer and look it up as I needed to know what we were in for.  Our sweet baby boy had tested positive for a very rare metabolic disorder where his body could not break down milk sugar.  For the past four days I had been poisoning my newborn son with my breast milk.  His body was slowly shutting down.

When we arrived to the hospital, they immediately put him under the bili-light; his liver was swollen and he was jaundiced.  His labs were off the chart and he had turned orange by this point.  He was lethargic, wasn’t eating, and slept most of the day.   Things were very stressful and we prayed that everything would be okay.  The hospital was amazing and as the days passed, our son began to respond to a soy-based diet.  He was out of the woods and Gavin was released to come home.

Seeing your child sick and helpless in the hospital is overwhelming and life-changing.  You see how fragile life can be and how one decision can change your life as well as your child’s life.  I had no idea that Thom and I could be carriers for this rare disorder.  No one else in our family had ever had this happen and the chances of meeting another person with this disorder is low.  Galactosemia affects only 1 in 60,000 babies born every year.

Galactosemia is rare, it is under-researched and there are complications that are just so difficult to explain and understand.  How can milk sugar affect reproduction and vision?    Unfortunately, it does affect many different organs and causes one’s body to function differently than someone without galactosemia.

Our story is a happy one as our son is doing great.  He eats a restricted diet (dairy-free), his liver is functioning normally, and his galactose levels are finally down to a reasonable range (it only took 6 years since having breast milk to get his levels down to an acceptable range!).  There are unfortunately many complications with Galactosemia that can happen over time, including: enlarged liver, kidney failure, cataracts, brain damage, and speech and learning delays.  Gavin has been free and clear of the major complications for some time now, and we pray he continues down that path.   He does struggle in school, but we are truly blessed to have amazing resources, a strong support system and terrific teachers.  Gavin is thriving!  He is learning, growing and looks and acts like a normal 7 year old boy as you can see below:).

Gavin supporting Rare Disease Day 2011 and Galactosemia Research!

Gavin has a very sweet and sensitive personality with a pure and loving heart.  He works very hard and really gives life his all. He has opened my eyes on a daily basis to God’s grace and he is such a blessing to me and our family.  Our cause is the Galactosemia Foundation and their mission is:

  • To educate, support and provide advocacy for those affected by Galactosemia.
  • To network with professionals to inspire the treatment and advanced research of Galactosemia.

Thank you for visiting us on this very special day.  Sharing our causes has been an emotional dream come true!

Best of 2011 at Magnolia Lane

We hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! Didn’t it go fast?

This is a great week across “Blogland”, as “Best Of” parties start popping up all over the place. As I read through some other favorite blogs, I started thinking of what I (we) might post here as the “Best of 2011″ from Magnolia Lane.  I decided to run with this one by myself instead of collaborating for ideas from my co-blogging girls –I hope they will forgive me!

As our first full year of blogging wraps up, I wanted to take the chance to sing the praises of two of the most creative and inspiring women I know–Christy & Terry, of course!

Starting with Christy…I am going to talk about what she accomplished in her new kitchen, but I can’t NOT mention quickly her amazing, adorable AND inspiring PANTRY which has practically gone viral on Pinterest.

Isnt’ it cute? She sadly had to move from our Magnolia Lane “model” home this summer, but in her usual unstoppable fashion jumped right in transforming this kitchen…

into a new and Christy-improved version.

Then this fall she took it to the next level, which we showed you all yesterday here

Now, I moved 3 months ago and still have boxes in places I shouldn’t mention, but in a summer’s time she knocked the cabinet painting out and still managed to entertain my gang for a week’s visit. And, if this isn’t enough, she re-vamped it even further this fall with a painted backsplash, new wall color, diy curtains and more. Its such a gorgeous room, and as you can tell, grass doesn’t grow under her feet! And, in case you missed just how amazing she is–she also homeschools, volunteers, is an supportive military wife and of course a dear friend.

I am not sure what Terry would pick for her best post, but I know what I consider her most under-recognized event on our blog. With summer starting and my impending move we didn’t get a chance to showcase this fabulous Baby Shower Terry hosted for our wonderful friend Trinity as much as (I think) it deserved.

She pulled out all her “event planner” stops to have the most beautiful, fun and genuinely sweet baby shower I have ever seen.  I doubt I will ever go such a nice a baby shower again in my life! This talented girl made all the food (it wasn’t catered), decorated (it was held in her backyard with two standard tents which she completely “gussied” up), and she calmly functioned as the hostess for 30 women on a sweltering HOT day!

But, finally here is what I consider our most important/significant event of the year.  It’s not a decorating or DIY post but I hope everyone will take a moment to read Terry’s 24 Days of Giving series wrap-up here to see all she accomplished.

When Terry suggested a series on 24 Random Acts of Kindness we all jumped on board. However, you can probably tell from my lack of posting about my “acts” that I didn’t quite make all 24–I admit it. Terry completely ran with this idea. And, as just ONE of many wonderful outcomes of this venture, she managed the purchasing, collection and delivery of gifts to 75 children in foster/social services care who otherwise wouldn’t have received anything. And that, right there, makes every moment we spend working on this blog so very worth it!

{And, can I just say a big “Woo-Hoo!” for her?}

Anyway, I don’t have a best of post that can compete with all that fabulousness! I can say that this blog and all the friends and supporters we have made this year from it have been significant to me as I made a challenging move to a new area. Its also been great fun, and an honor, to work with these 2 amazing girls who are seriously GOOD AT EVERYTHING–if you can’t tell?

So…what’s next for 2012? We’ll be working on our thoughts on that this week. We have some new ideas starting up, like a healthy recipe/meal planning series to motivate us all, some more home re-do’s to feature and we have some very fun giveaways coming up in January.

So, I hope you enjoyed our “Best Of”…Did I miss anything?

Thank you to everyone who has commented, subscribed, followed or dropped us a note this year. We read and appreciate each and every comment and thought.

Season of Giving: The final 4 Days and Recap!

I cannot believe that my Season of Giving is over!!  I am not sure if I feel a bit relieved that I completed my goal or sad that I don’t have a daily purpose anymore?  This has been such an amazing journey!!  I think this experience showed me just how much I have and how selfish I can be at times.   I am so fortunate to have a husband who can support my family and I am so lucky to have time to share it with others in need.   I see my life a bit differently now and I hope to continue my Acts of Kindness throughout 2012.  Thank you for reading, posting and joining me on this little adventure.

RECAP:

Day 1: donated hats, mittens, gloves, scarves and socks to a local church.

Day 2: Donated money to the Salvation Army

Day 3: Helped collect and deliver coats to a local coat drive

Day 4: I spoke at my grandmothers funeral service

Day 5: Paid a toll for the person driving behind me

Day 6: Sent a thank you note to my Mom

Day 7: Delivered the first round of gifts to the children in foster care

Day 8: Picked up litter in my neighborhood

Day 13: Gave my mailman a gift

Day 14-19: Collaborative effort and huge collection of gifts for children in foster care.

Day 20: Handed out gifts to Gavin and Lincoln’s teachers.  Teachers have such a huge impact on children lives and I love to recognize their hard work and dedication with a little gifts and big thank you notes.  I am so fortunate to have 5 AMAZING teachers working with both Gavin and Lincoln this year.  Their kindness, patience, strength, positive attitudes and dedication make my boys LOVE school.  Teachers deserve so much credit for what they do so I always to try to recognize and thank them their efforts especially during the holiday’s.

My “gift pick” for Teachers, a PSA Essentials Personalized Stamp:

Perfect Teacher Gift

Day 21: Delivered the last set of gifts to social services and donated some additional clothing and toys to my local Salvation Army.

Day 22: Answered a free trivia question on freekibble.com. Anytime you answer a trivia question (right or wrong) 10 pieces of kibble are donated to the Human Society shelters all over the USA.

Day 23: Invited the neighbor’s children over to make gingerbread houses (gave their mama a bit of a break).

Day 24: Gave to my church and prayed for good tidings to all.

Day 25: Mission Accomplished and Merry Christmas!!!

Season of Giving: Day’s 14-19

Days 14-19:  A Collaborative Effort.

I really thought I would be listing a new act of kindness daily but this past week has been dedicated to emailing, following up, collecting, gathering, labeling, wrapping, buying and delivering gifts to an additional 20 women and children in need here in Fauquier County.  After it is all said and done, Erin and I have collected multiple gifts for over 75 children.  People have been so GENEROUS this holiday season we are just so touched!!!  We have also been able to sponsored 4 additional families just this past week.  We could not have done this alone and I know it is due to God’s grace that we accomplished so much in 5 days.   I have to send out a heart felt thank you to the following people who have supported me and this mission of giving:

Erin F. (my partner in crime), Amy B., Christine K., Annabell L., Robin R., Sara & Hans C. (and all their church members for donating SOOO much) Nicole J., Emily V., Stacey Y., Michelle A., and Trinity J.  What would I have done without you support and help this past week and what a COLLABORATIVE effort to say the least.   I honestly delivered two truck loads of gifts and donations to the Department of Social Services.  They were blown away by our donations and efforts.  Erin, I think we may have a permanent job in 2012:)

Happy Giving and Joy to the World!

-Terry

Season of Giving: Day 8-13

WOW- what a week here at 11 Magnolia Lane.  We have been working really hard on our “24 Days of Giving” but I have to say, last week was hard.  One of the programs I choose to support this holiday season was to provide gifts for children in Fauquier Social Services.  I partnered up with a good friend and we managed to provide gifts for over 50 children.  It hasn’t ended there as the requests continue to come in.  It has take much more time than I originally planned but it has been a wonderful experience through and through.  Long story short, I have not been able to do as much as I planned this past week but I do have to say, my friends chipped in and helped me continue my goal of 24 Days of Giving.  I guess that is why it is called the “Season of Giving”….. when I was in need, my friends “gave” back to me.  They supported my mission, gave me lots of love and support so that I could reach my goal.  Thank you to everyone who got me through Days 8-13.  I am feeling more motivated than ever and I am looking forward to the next 11 days of Giving….

Day 8: Picked up litter in my neighborhood.  What a great way to get some exercise and teach my boy’s about Mother Earth and selfless acts of kindness.

Day 9: Brought doggie treats to our local SPCA for all the sweet animals that reside there.

Day 10: Delivered homemade “snowman” holiday gifts to my neighbors (more on this later).

Day 11: Dropped off a toy at a local Toys-For-Tots collection location.

Day 12: My dear friend Christina shared her Random Act of Kindness with me and I had to share it with you.  She was mailing some packages at her local shipping store and the young man in line in front of her didn’t have enough money to send his package.  She kindly offered to pay for his shipment in full which was a bit over $14 dollars.  What a sweet, kind and generous gesture.

This is where the story gets even better….  She had more shopping to do and went next door to Game Stop to pick up a few gifts for family members.  While she checked out, her total was much less than expected so she asked the clerk why?  He said that there was a sale today and she would receive her least expensive game for free.  That game would have cost her the same amount of money as the package cost to mail.  That, to me, is just a blessing back from God after her very generous Random Act of Kindness.

Day 13: Gave my mailman a gift card to Starbucks and thanked him for all his support over the past year. Rain, sleet or snow… he has always delivered our mail and has always been very sweet to my two eager boys that want to carry the mail inside.   I really appreciate his kindness and dedication especially with all the cut backs the USPS has experienced this year.

Season of Giving, December 2nd: Donated to the Salvation Army

Every December you hear their bells ringing and you see the red kettle hanging… do you donate money or do you walk on by?

I have donated to the Salvation Army for as long as I can remember.  When I was a little girl my mom would hand me her loose change so I could drop it into the bucket.  It made me feel so special and I have enjoyed doing the same thing with my own children.  I have to admit, I didn’t know where or how that money was used when I was little and I still don’t today.  I know they have stores around town and I am sure they give money to the needy but I honestly have no idea what their mission is.  So today I decided that it was time that I truly understand the Salvation Army’s mission and I wanted to share I have learned.

I copied this directly from the Salvation Army’s Website:

The “miracle” of Christmas is repeated over and over again through the joy of caring and sharing.  The traditional red kettle is an integral part of the Christmas scene, with millions of dollars donated each year to aid needy families, seniors, and the homeless, in keeping with the spirit of the season.

Donations provide Christmas dinners, clothing, and toys for families in need. Financial assistance also helps with basic necessities, along with seasonal aid. Families of prisoners often are included.

Volunteers distribute gifts to shut-ins in hospitals and nursing homes, and shelters are open for sit-down dinners. The Salvation Army endeavors to bring spiritual light and love to those it serves at Christmas so that the real meaning of the season is not forgotten.

Many families receive aid over a period of months after the Christmas season as well, people struggling with difficult family, emotional, or employment problems.

What a WONDERFUL organization and I really appreciate that fact that they are spreading the true meaning of the holiday season by bringing spiritual light and love to those they serve.  I hope that the next time you see that red kettle, you give them at least you loose “change” and help make a “change” in someone’s life.
