Advent Calendars: Let the Countdown Begin

It’s almost December 1st do you have your Advent Calendar ready?

A couple years ago I created this advent calendar inspiration board. It was such a fun project and gave me tons of ideas for some holiday DIY projects.  Unfortunately, I created it mid-holiday season which was a bit too late to really put to any good use. This year I decided to showcase it again since December first is right around the corner.  If you don’t already have an advent calendar in place, there are some wonderful DIY ideas above.

If you don’t have time to do all 25 days why not just the last 12?

This year I actually have two advent calendars in place to help me and my family count down the day till Christmas.

I love the red and white string as well as the tiny clothespins.

Happy Birthday Gama!

The first calendar was a gift from my mother-in-law (aka: Gama). It is a simple design but I absolutely love the cardboard numbers and the clothes line design. The red and white “bakery” string reminds me of the NYC Italian cookies my cousin would bring to Christmas Eve dinner.  I have hung this advent countdown from my mantel in our family room.   I feel it is the perfect location as this is where Santa will magically sneak into our house on Christmas morn.  It keeps things in perspective for my anxious and impatient little boys.  Sitting above the advent countdown is my beloved Norman Rockwell print of Santa mapping out where all the “good boys” live on the globe.  This is another good reminder for my children that Santa is checking his naughty and nice list. The overall feel of both the advent calendar and print gives an old fashion and nostalgic vibe which I personally love.

My second advent calendar is a small wooden house that I purchased 5 years ago. At the time, it was so difficult to find an advent calendar that would last.  Most of the advent calendars were cardboard and hid little chocolates. I paid over $80 for this little house and it was money well spent.  It is hand made, each little woodland animal is hand painted and there are 25 adorable doors.  It is still one on my most treasured holiday finds.  One of the reasons why it is so dear to my heart is because my boys love this holiday decoration.  Each year, when we begin to decorate the house, it is the first thing they ask about.   They cannot wait to get their hands on it and when they do, they carefully review each animal and strategically place them behind each numbered door.  This year, my youngest son Lincoln hid his favorite animal the Bald Eagle behind the number 5 which also happens to be his age.  He is so cute!  It is those little memories that make this one of my favorite holiday things.

Check out #5!

Happy December!!

How are you counting down to the big day?

Baby Boy Inspiration Board and Maternity Thrift Store Find

As most of you know I am expecting my third baby in early Spring.  This will be my third boy, and we are all very excited.  We are working through the name game (although I think we found one:),  we’re discussing nursery colors, and purchasing lots of adorable baby boy clothes.  Look at all the great ideas I have found on the web to keep me inspired:

The one thing I have not focused on is my maternity style.   I have some maternity clothes from my past two pregnancies as well as some clothes from my sister.  It really has been just enough to get by these past few months.  With Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner, I definitely need to up my maternity style and invest in some updated maternity fashion.

Here is my latest purchase from a local consignment shop! (Sorry for the blurry photography, it was hard to keep steady:)

I think I may need to add a pair of Spanx for Thanksgiving Day as this dress shows all my maternity curves:)

Although it is not maternity, it is a stretch jersey material and a size larger than I normally wear, so it fits my changing body.  It is also Boden so it is well made and a brand I personally love.  This dress retails close to $100 and I got it for $15, what a steal!   I think it is perfect for Thanksgiving and works well with my growing baby bump.

Side Profile, 20 weeks and counting!

Jewelry makes all the difference. Stella and Dot Snake Pendant Necklace, House of Harlow Gold Medallion Necklace and my favorite Michael Kors Rose Gold Watch!!

“F” is for Fall Fashion Inspiration Board

F is for Fall Fashion

Don’t you wish you could shop all day long?  I sure do!  Unfortunately, my busy schedule and empty wallet usually gets in the way of my shopping dreams:).  Luck for me, I have found a creative outlet to help me through the days that I cannot shop.  I am sure by now most of you have heard of Polyvore.  Have you ever used it?  I use it and I love it.  It is a fun online fashion social-commerce website that allows you to create inspiration boards without spending a dime.  It as actually voted Time Magazine‘s list of 50 best websites of 2011.

I thought it would be fun to share some fall fashion inspiration this week.    It is just another side of me; my fashion “likes” and my shopping “must haves”.  I will admit that most of these posts fall into the category of day dreaming but a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do :)   Come dream and drool over some fall “must haves” this 2012 season!

Happy Shopping!

Stars and Stripes Inspiration Board and Summer BBQ Recipes

Are you ready to kick off BB-Q season?  Do you have a “go to” recipe that you are planning  to bring to your next pot luck cook out?  Are you looking forward to some patriotic fireworks this Independence Day?   For those of you who need a bit of red white and blue inspiration, this post is for you!  I hope you get into the spirit of summer with this Stars and Stripes Inspiration Board and I hope you enjoy some of my “must try” cookout recipes, perfect for your next party.

Stars and Stripes Inspiration Board- Happy July 4th!!

July 4th always sneaks up on me so this year I wanted to ensure I planned ahead.  I love a good cookout but I often find myself overindulging and overeating!  I have put together  healthy menu to get you through the holiday and/or your next summer cookout without blowing up like a firework:).

Grilled Lemon Thyme Chicken (Ina Garten)

Stock Image

  • 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice (4 lemons)
  • 3/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon pepper
  • 1 tablespoon minced fresh thyme

Directions:

  1. Whisk together the lemon juice, olive oil, salt, pepper, and thyme.
  2. Pour over the chicken breasts in a nonreactive bowl.
  3. Cover and marinate in the refrigerator for 6 hours or overnight.
  4. Grill to perfection and enjoy:)

Red, White and Blue Potato Salad (From Cooking Light)

Cooking Light: Red White and Blue Potato Salad

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 cups fingerling potatoes, halved lengthwise (about 10 ounces)
  • 2 cups small red potatoes, quartered (about 10 ounces)
  • 2 cups small blue potatoes, halved lengthwise (about 10 ounces)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
  • 3 hard-cooked large eggs, finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 garlic clove, minced

Preparation

  1. Place fingerling and red potatoes in a saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 15 minutes or until tender. Drain; cool slightly. Place potatoes in a large bowl.
  2. Place blue potatoes in a saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer 10 minutes or until tender. Drain; cool slightly. Add blue potatoes, onion, parsley, dill, chives, and eggs to bowl; toss gently.
  3. Combine vinegar and remaining ingredients. Pour over potato mixture; toss gently to combine. Serve warm, at room temperature, or chilled.
Note: Blue potatoes are starchier than the others and tend to bleed, so cook them separately. If you need to, prepare this dish a day ahead, but add the blue potatoes just before serving. If your potatoes are larger than the ones we call for, cut them to a uniform size.

Strawberry Mousse Parfait with Fresh Fruit and Almonds

(Adapted from Chocolate-Covered Katie and it is Paleo friendly!!)

Stock Image

I found this recipe on Pinterest, but you know me, I had to make it my own.  Chocolate-Covered Katie is a blog I follow as she finds ways to make all decadent desserts healthier.  It is a great way to indulge without overindulging.  This dessert is wonderfully light, fresh and creamy.  You really feel like you are cheating with this creamy dessert when in fact you are feeding your body wonderfully healthy coconut milk.  Coconut is all the rage right now as it is easy for the body to digest and is immediately used for energy.   Who doesn’t need a bit more energy these days:).   The presentation is perfect for your next party and the coconut cream and berries will keep you energized for your next game of horseshoes!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 can full-fat coconut milk
  • 2-5 strawberries for mousse, additional strawberries for garnish and diced layering
  • almonds (sliced or chopped)
  • blueberries for layering and garnish
  • mint for garnish
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • sweetener to taste (Stevia or powdered sugar)
  •  tiny pinch of salt

DIRECTIONS

  1. Open coconut milk and ensure it is very thick.  If it is not, transfer can to bowl and refrigerate overnight.  The coconut needs to be very very thick.
  2. Transfer the think coconut milk to a bowl leaving out any of the coconut water.
  3. Blend in strawberries, vanilla and Stevia
  4. Chop additional strawberries for layering (toss with a bit of sugar or Stevia to make them sweet)
  5. Rinse the blueberries
  6. In a pretty glass layer the following: mousse, strawberries, almonds, mousse, blueberries, almonds.  The last layer should end with mousse and garnish with a strawberry and/or blueberry and a sprig of mint.  Chill in the fridge until you are ready to serve.  This is a great time saving, make ahead dessert!

 Happy Independence Day!

“Spring” Forward Inspiration Board

It’s that time of year again… time to spring forward and time to give up that extra hour of glorious sleep.  Losing that extra hour is such a difficult transition for me and especially for my children.   I am trying not to fret as there is so much to look forward to in the upcoming months.

I just wanted to share some “Spring” forward inspiration to get you through the time change this weekend.

Tree Trimming Inspiration Board & Stamp Winner!

A little Holiday decorating inspiration!

AND….the winner of the PSA Essentials Custom Stamp Giveaway (via Random.org) is HOLLY who said:

One random act of kindness that my daughter Chloe and I are planning on doing is donating her very loved stuffed animals to our local Children’s Hospital. She has outgrown them and instead of throwing them out (well, some we did because the were “too well loved”) we are donating them to children who will continue to love them very much.

What a wonderful idea! Holly please let us know what custom stamp you would like. And, a big thank you to all who entered!

Let there be Light (s)!

Before I run on about the drama of lighting selection in my new house, I wanted to say a huge Thank You to Shelli at A La Mode for the feature as part of her Roomspiration Nursery series of our “Princess Nursery“. A la Mode is one of my favorite blogs (she finds the most gorgeous homes to share!) and she could not have been sweeter about our little nursery feature. Did you see all the great nursery’s she had this week? It just makes you want to have a new little one to decorate a special room for…

While I don’t have a room with a crib and changing table in my new home as my children are growing older. But, hands down, the hardest part of building our new house has been making the lighting selections.  We opted not to take our builder’s standard lighting “package”, and instead take an allowance to select our lights ourselves.  Had the allowance gone much further then it actually did, making these selections would have been very fun. The light fixtures for our main rooms (dining room, kitchen, foyer) quickly used up most of the credit we had so for the less “public” rooms (like the laundry room), its been a bit of a challenge to find a light fixture that works with the decor ideas I have but within almost NO budget.

Thankfully, I have a wonderful friend who knows lighting and design. She has been tireless in helping me make selections, even when we were up against a 24-hour deadline and my brain was fried from all the last-minute craziness. (I shared about it here). I wanted to share these beautiful lighting boards she made for me which really helped me refine my ideas. You will see soon that I incorporated much of what she pulled together in my new home.

So…we are finally (fingers crossed!) less then a week from closing. The house has come together beautifully, beyond what I hoped for.  What did I pick for lights? Here is a sneak peak of my kitchen lighting! Stay tuned, I hope to post pictures next week of the interior.

Gone Glamping

Autum in all it’s glory!!

I can already smell Fall?  S’mores toasting, apple pies baking and pumpkin ravioli sauteing. I cannot wait to see the leaves change and the harvest moon brightly shinning above.  Fall is by far, my favorite time of year.

My hubby and I have always been into hiking, fishing and camping- we are definitely into the great outdoors.  With the addition of two boys, our family makes any excuse to spend a weekend exploring the woods.  I spent most of my time as a child exploring the woods and and searching for little natural treasures around my home in the beautiful Hudson Valley.  It is a joy to watch my children as they now marvel in all that nature has to offer.  Camping and hiking have been a great way for my family to bond, relax and enjoy a “back-to-basics” style of  living.

As much as I love to “rough it”, I am also a true Gemini, and need glaming things up once in a while.   Being the only girl in my house I sometimes feel the need to “get girly” so camping isn’t always the perfect get-a-way.  However,  I found the perfect solution for the ying and yang sides of my brain: “Glamping”!!

Glamorous Camping ofter the great outdoors in a very luxurious setting.  I LOVE THIS IDEA!!!   It is truly a romantic, relaxing and a luxurious way to spend time outdoors and with people you love.  I think this would be a perfect anniversary weekend away don’t you? ** Hint Hint Honey, I hope you’re readying my blog this week!!**

Here is a look at my perfect Glamping Anniversary Weekend!!!

Fall fashion perfect for a glamourous camping weekend!
