A new baby and a new house!

**Our newest giveaway is up and running over on our Current Giveaways page.  We’re giving away two copies of 31 Days to a Heart of Hospitality, an ebook by our friend Edie over at Life{in}Grace.**

Here is a bit of what’s been going on with the other two of us while Christy’s been covering 11 Magnolia Lane over the last two weeks! She did a great job of course :) She is now in the midst of preparing to move, and winding up the school year, so I told her I would jump back in and give everyone all the news.

First of all, we are SO proud to share our newest resident at Magnolia Lane. Last week Terry and her family welcomed this sweet bundle of joy to their family. I have been lucky enough to spend time with him and can attest he will just melt your heart!

Gorgeous photo by Courtney Anderson Photography. He is in his beautiful nursery, see the whole room HERE.

And we’ve completed our move! Well, at least as far as we are able to reside in our home, but we still have boxes everywhere. We really jumped back in our new area with kids’ activities, school events, sporting events and of course, that new baby pictured above to visit  :) so unpacking has taken a backseat.

Our new home is very different from our former lakefront home near the beach. We traded the water view for space, space and more space. Just having a basement for storage the kids to play in is so nice, not to mention all this closet space :) I will be sure to show off more of the house once I get it more presentable but for now here is a bit of a sneak peak via my phone.

{the dining room}

While we waited for our belongings to arrive, I had a few days in the empty house to make some adaptions so it would match our current cooler, light color scheme. Much of this home is decorated in warmer tones like yellow, mustard, moss green and burgundy.

family room

{the family room}

We discovered the other day that the stripes on the fireplace wall are not what they seem–wallpaper–but actually painted on the wall. I need to find out the scoop on that from the owner, it’s just amazing to me someone could paint perfect stripes on a two-story wall.

front hall

{the front hall}

screen porch

{the screened porch–I have BIG plans for this space!}

I did have a few projects right at the top of my list. First off, my oldest son is moving into the room that was a former office. I tackled removing the flowered wallpaper border, as it is not really my son’s taste. I’ll do a post on that shortly, I learned a lot of what to do and not do removing wallpaper. Here is the room previously, it was an easy fix and after the border came down, the beige walls work perfectly for a preteen boy.

declan room

I also painted the master bedroom. It was formerly dark minty green, and our bedding and accessories didn’t really match. I have been obsessed with the Sherwin Williams color ‘Blue Diamond’ since I saw it in my brother in law’s beach condo last winter. Its the perfect palest blue, with just hints of gray, and couldn’t wait to use it in my bedroom. Had I not just painted my old master bedroom, I would have redone it immediately to that color after our visit.

bedroom after

Unfortunately things didn’t go as planned with the color, it came out WAY more blue then I expected. Here is the repainted room, and while I like it, its obviously not the ‘palest’ blue out there. I am not sure if its the dark green behind {but I used paint with primer?} or perhaps I incorrectly remembered the color and got something else similar instead, or maybe the color was off from being mixed at Home Depot? {Thoughts?} Anyway, lesson learned but I will just live with it–or repaint the room again down the road!

I am off to go unpack, but thanks for stopping by!

Open House at Christy’s–Updated Home Tour

Open house at 11 Magnolia Lane

Front porch at 11 Magnolia Lane

If you’ve been hanging out on Magnolia Lane with us for any amount of time, you know that Terry’s about to bring Baby Boy K into the world and that Amy and I are getting ready to move.  To say that we’ve all been just a bit frantic these last few weeks would be an understatement.  Amy showed you guys her updated home tour {here} a few weeks ago, right before they put their home on the market.  Gorgeous!  Well, we just put ours on the rental market a few days ago, and I’m going to give you a tour, too.  As I look back and realize that I’ve painted every single room (except for the two-story great room) and completed projects throughout the house, I have to admit that I do feel like I’ve accomplished a lot in the almost-tw0-years that we’ve lived here.

Here’s my favorite place to sit while I watch the kids ride their bikes:

But you probably wanted to see inside, so, without further ado, come on in!

Front door at 11 Magnolia Lane

My foyer opens directly into the dining room on the right, with the great room straight ahead.  I keep a little old chippy dresser in the hall and store table linens in the drawers–so convenient for entertaining!

Front entry at 11 Magnolia Lane

The dining room has undergone a transformation, with painted walls, a new chandelier, open shelving, and painted window treatments.  I love how it turned out–not too formal, not too casual, but JUST RIGHT!  Read about the dining room and see more photos {here} and {here}.  By the way, the dining room table and chairs just got a coat of white chalk paint, plus new fabric on the chairs (complete with a monogram because I’m addicted), so expect another update on how I did all that soon.

Our great room has a huge two-story bank of windows on the rear wall.  Thank goodness I loved the paint color (Fawn Brindle by Sherwin Williams) because it would have been a challenge to paint!  We have great built-ins on either side of the gas fireplace, and my stained glass window has pride of place, as always.  Many of you know that the window is from the church in which my parents were married.  My mom’s been gone for ten years now, and I find it so comforting to have some of her favorite things in my own home.

The stairway separates the great room from the kitchen, although the entire downstairs is nice and open.  My kitchen has had tons of work done to it, as many of you know.  We started out with blue walls, cherry cabinets, black appliances, and a brown tile backsplash, and wound up with this:

Kitchen at 11 Magnolia Lane

The Better Homes & Gardens special interest magazine (Kitchen + Bath Makeovers) featuring my kitchen hit newsstands earlier in March, and I’ve gotten permission to show you a couple of the amazing photos they shot (below).  It’s truly amazing what a professional photographer, stylist, and lighting can accomplish!  Read more about the projects I did in the kitchen {here} and {here}.

The pantry was a great big corner space, but it had white wire shelves (my nemesis) so I ripped them out and built solid shelving instead.  I put in a chandelier while I was at it–why not?

The laundry room is nestled between the kitchen and the dining room.  This room was so fun to decorate–from the painted wallpaper, to the Ballard Designs drying rack, to the cafe style shelving I built.  After a search for the perfect metal storage cabinet, I found it at the Nashville flea market (I will SO miss that flea market when we move!).  The laundry room was featured in the January 2013 issue of Cottages & Bungalows magazine–very exciting!

Laundry room at 11 Magnolia Lane

Just off the kitchen is the screened porch.  This was on my must-have list when we moved here.  My hubby is irresistible to mosquitoes and this is the only way I can keep him outside in the summertime.  I put a chandelier out here and added sheers to one of the side walls, both for privacy and to block the sun.  We eat dinner out here during the warm months, and it’s a great spot to relax with a glass of wine in the evening.

The powder room got a major facelift, too, going from dark brown to bright white with paint and beadboard.  I changed out the light fixture, painted the mirror, and added decoupaged toile switch plates.

Our master bedroom is on the first floor; our kids are old enough that this worked out wonderfully.  This space started out apple green, and after three gallons of Benjamin Moore’s Pebble Beach, the bedroom (all the way up to the cathedral ceiling), sitting area (which is my 11 Magnolia Lane “office”), and bathroom were a much more restful color!  The bedroom and sitting room redo is {here} (although the sitting room has changed again since then), and the master bath redo is {here}.

We have his and hers walk in closets between the bedroom and the bathroom.  I just worked on my husband’s and will post that in the next few weeks, but my closet redo is {here}{here}, and {here}.  I painted everything pale pink and added a silver glaze in a harlequin diamond pattern.   I also added a chandelier and lots of other girlie touches.  I love how it turned out, and I think this might be the room I’ll miss the most when we move.

Now we’ll move upstairs.  I wanted to rip the carpet off these bad boys and do beadboard risers like my friends Steve & Robyn did {here}, but I ran out of time.  I do love the painted banister, though–it really pops against the gray walls.  Amy gave me the candelabra at the top of the stairs.  We swap stuff all the time to mix things up.

Stairs at 11 Magnolia Lane

We have four rooms upstairs:  my daughter’s room, my son’s room, the guest room, and the bonus room.  My daughter’s room has been changed up slightly since the last post {here} on it; we painted her iron headboard again.  I swear, it’s some sort of OCD disorder with me (one of many, my husband is thinking as he reads this…).

Aqua, brown, and pink girl's room at 11 Magnolia Lane

The DIY ballet barre has been a huge hit with her; it will probably have to move to Savannah with us.

My son’s room looks a lot like it did in our old house in North Carolina {here}.  I do love the old World War II footlocker that he uses as a nightstand.  It was his great-grandfather’s.

The gumball machine is frequently running low thanks to my two kids and their friends in the neighborhood.  The Coke crate holds a few loose Legos, although video games and Minecraft are taking over at this age!

Boys' room at 11 Magnolia Lane

Here’s the guest room (aka the “hodgepodge room”–we all have one!).  You can read about the anniversay pillow slipcovers {here}.  Also in this room is the old entertainment center that I painted green, although it’s not in this shot (you can see a tiny bit of it in the mirror).

Guest room at 11 Magnolia Lane

My teeny-tiny craft and sewing area is on the wall.  I posted about it {here}, although since then I have painted the sewing machine table and chair white.  I keep the Rustoleum people in business singlehandedly!

Small craft and sewing area at 11 Magnolia Lane

We also have a bonus room, and I’ll show it to you, but don’t judge, OK?  It’s where the kids play video games (and even board games, sometimes), and I haven’t done much with it.

Bonus room 11 Magnolia Lane

Oops, I forgot that there is a bathroom up here–the urchins are not using my gorgeous master bath!  I posted about the board and batten treatment I did {here} and if you’re at all handy, then I highly recommend this easy project.  My kids will hang towels up on hooks, but just drop them on the floor when confronted with a towel bar.  Who needs that?

Board and batten kids bath at 11 Magnolia LaneThe only other area that I’ve wanted to show you for ages is our walk-in storage off the bonus room.  Half of it is packed full of boxes (Christmas ornaments, old photos, etc), but the other half is my daughter’s play area for her dolls.  All of her American Girl dolls and their tiny furniture are set up, and since the door shuts on whatever she’s done, she never has to clean it up.  Of course, that’s why we’ve never shared it with you, as it has yet to be neat enough to photograph!

I’m so glad you stopped by for a home tour–I enjoyed having it neat enough for a few brief moments to share it with you (kids! dogs! cat! hamster! laundry!).

Baby Nursery Reveal!

baby nursery reveal flag

Baby boy K will be here in the next couple of weeks.   My family and I are trying to be patient but now that his nursery is complete and I am simply ready to meet our baby boy.   I find his room incredibly peaceful and I am drawn to it’s simplicity.

Baby Nursery

The white crib, drapes and bedding are angelic and pure.  They are the Vivian Drape from Ikea.  Two 56 X94 drapes come in each $10.00 pack.  I used them on the windows but I also used them to create the crib skirt since it was cheaper than buying fabric and sewing my own crib skirt.  I simply tucked them under the mattress so I can re-purpose the drapes once he is grown.

The turquoise and grey flags were designed by Amy.  She had the guests at my baby shower write well wishes on the back of each flag.  I think they add a pop of much-needed color and provide a sentimental touch to his room.   The star mirror came from a second hand store and I love that it has both gold and silver.  The light is from Home Depot and was under $75.00.

Baby Crib

White iron crib

Map Baby Nursery

Don’t just love those vintage map letters?  That was a gift from my in-laws and really make the room extra special.  I added a ruffled table cloth to an existing round table.  The lamp was spray painted blue for an added pop of color.   The rocking chair has been with me since the beginning! I have rocked, fed, and read to my wonderful boys in that comfy chair so changing the fabric was just difficult for me to fathom.  I have loved that chair 8 years ago and continue to love it today.  I think the blues and greens in the map letters forgive the added shades of sage and cream.

Night stand Nursery

This dresser came from a local antique store.  I wasn’t sure if I was going to keep it original but I have to say that I love the wood and the brass handles.  I simply works for this room and adds that vintage feel.  The photo display was challenging for me.  I like how it turned out but I really stressed out over the layout.  Check out the gazelle head– it is my favorite piece on this wall.

**Before I begin, don’t miss our current giveaway for vinyl house numbers…CLICK HERE TO ENTER**

I am wrapping up my home tour {since our home is for sale I have been doing a lot of photographing/staging etc.} with one last tiny little room. This was actually the first room I painted and decorated right when we moved in so our guests had a nice little bathroom to use. And I think that among our first guests was Christy and family? So I really wanted it to be a nicer space then it was when we started!

Here is the plain, builder grade before:

Getting Ready for Baby- Nursery Sneak Peek

Terry Maternity

As most of you know, Baby Boy K is going to be here very soon. Over the past few months I decided to take a bit of a blogging break to prepare for his arrival. The time off has been bittersweet, but it was really good for my soul and my growing baby boy.  I have just over a month before this little guy arrives, and I have been working on a bunch of sewing projects as well as planning out his nursery.  Christy and Amy have been providing a ton of inspiration and lots of support over the past few months, and I am feeling very blessed and grateful for their friendship.

Here is a sneak peek of some of the items that I have been collecting over the past few months that will be displayed our baby boy’s nursery. I cannot wait to share the final nursery reveal and hear what you all think.

Vintage Map Suitcase filled with a beautiful plaid blanket (thank you Amy) , toy money (Thank You Grammy) and his sonogram photo.

Vintage Map Suitcase filled with a beautiful plaid blanket (thank you Amy) , toy money (Thank You Grammy) and his sonogram photo.

As you can see I have a vintage map theme in mind for the nursery.  I found this amazing wooden soda crate from an antique store here in Warrenton.  I fell in love and just had to have it.  It was reasonably priced and the perfect storage solution for toys and books.  Speaking of books, that Better Homes and Gardens book is a special gift from Christy.  It has vintage stories and offers an awesome pop of color for this neutral nursery.
The maps are just USGS topographical maps that you can purchase at any outdoor hiking store or even online.  I am lucky enough to be married to a cartographer (aka a “map maker”) so I didn’t have to go very far to get these.  I love the shades of green and blue that these maps bring into the nursery.  The darker “vintage” styled map is actually wrapping paper from Paper Source.  They have an amazing collection of wrapping paper which costs $3.95 per sheet.  I particular love this piece because of the vintage tea-stained finish.   I also found the ABC sheet of wrapping paper and thought it was really cute.  It is reminiscent of vintage school art and I plan to have that framed as well.  Check out all the cool and inexpensive wrapping paper products that the Paper Source has to offer.

This is my favorite find for the baby's room. It was not as cheap as I would have hoped but I know I will cherish this piece for years to come. It is solid wood and the antlers (you have to wait) are amazing.

Baby Boy K's Sonogram

Baby Boy K’s Sonogram

I hope to have a photo wall mixing white, silver and gold frames.  I have not purchased all the frames yet but I did find this frame at a sweet baby store.  I love the “coming soon” window.  Sonograms are just so special.  Hard to imagine that back when my mom had me they didn’t do them.  It is such a treasure have to this photo.

This mirror was a steal and I love the star shape as well as the silver and gold. It is perfectly set above the crib.

I had to include his closet that is filled with baby clothes generously donated by my dear friends. This baby is so lucky to have a closet filled with gently used clothes.

I do hope to spruce up the baby’s closet, but I had to share this photo of sweet newborn sized clothing.  I am so thankful for all my friends and family that have passed down clothes and supplies.  This baby is so very lucky, as am I!

I just love this PINK baby sleeping sign that Christy sent me.   Even a mom of three boys deserves a bit of pink!  What a great gift for any mom!

Spring Front Porch in Greens and Burlap

At some point, I should publish a list of all my front porch posts, because there are quite a few.  I LOVE to change things up on the porch for different holidays and seasons.  After taking down my Valentine’s wreath after that holiday, it was time to decorate a porch in a way that would take me through until spring.  Since we’re putting the house on the rental market in just a couple of weeks, I wanted things to look clean, crisp, and welcoming.  Here’s what I came up with:

Spring front porch at 11 Magnolia Lane

Last spring, I also used a combination of bright green and burlap; and you can read about that HERE.  The green cushions I used last year were Goodwill purchases and did not survive the summer (too much sun fade), so that’s why you don’t see them again.  This year, the green comes from florist’s moss, in the “B” on my door, and in the moss sphere in the urn.  The “B” was SO easy to make–the tutorial is HERE–I just posted it last week.    Amy posted the tutorial on the moss ball HERE and it was a little trickier because of the shape, but not by much.

Pretty front door at 11 Magnolia Lane

The white urn was a Goodwill find, although the tag on the bottom says it was originally from Kirkland’s.  I’ve been toying with spray painting it black.  Any thoughts?

The house number porch pillows are an easy project–I just slipcovered existing pillows using the tutorial I posted HERE.  The polka dot cushion is from one of my favorite Ebay stores–I buy all my outdoor pillows there, and the old window is from the Nashville flea market.  The chandelier is from a yard sale.

Old window on porch at 11 Magnolia Lane

I also planted some white violas in my two black urns–it’s still cold out, but it’s warm enough for them!  I added sphagnum moss and tiny grapevine balls for visual interest.

Front porch at 11 Magnolia Lane

The black wicker chairs are from a yard sale.  I scored both of them for $5.  They just got a new coat of black spray paint (I respray them pretty much every year) and they’re good to go for another season.

The plant stand is from Hobby Lobby, a few years ago.  My little old wicker table finally died this winter, so I spray painted this guy black and put him out there to take its place.  I need a little table to hold my coffee or wine (depending on the time of day :) while I watch the kids playing out front.

Black and white front porch at 11 Magnolia Lane

In the end, probably what made the biggest difference was that we trimmed all the bushes in the front and spread new black mulch.  Well, my husband trimmed the bushes and spread new black mulch.  I was busy doing something else (maybe hiding in my closet?).

Anyone need to rent a house in Nashville with a sweet front porch and a whole lot of chandeliers inside? :)  Just give me a yell!

Happy-almost-spring, and thanks for stopping by.

Our Family Room

chair side

Like Christy, I am gathering all my room photos together so we can prepare our home to be on the market. This room, while it’s probably our “most used” room, seems to always lag behind other rooms on my “to-do” list, and therefore really has never been shown to ‘the world’ here.

fireplace view

couch side

If we weren’t moving, I would paint the room to warm it up, but for now we are leaving it white. We chose a very neutral color scheme inside this home–dark floors, white walls, white kitchen. I know many of you prefer to see more “color” in rooms, but we designed this house during a crazy, stress-filled time in our lives {if you have met my daughter, you understand!} and I craved quiet in our new home. We also didn’t want the inside decor to take away from the pretty view of the lake outside.

My future decor plans include a custom cushion for the chest shown above. Also, reworking the couch pillows and painting our entertainment center. That will all happen after we get done touch-up painting and the pre-move purging finished {then pack, move, unpack etc.} I suppose!

{Amy’s} Updated House Tour

One of the nicest parts of blogging is that I have a permanent record of all the houses I have {recently} lived in. Of course the reason I haven’t shown every room in our current house is because every room hasn’t been whipped into ‘perfect’ blog-worthy shape.

However, I have done some updates and the time has come to pull some photos together in one place. We’ve been in this house over a year now, and while I still have a long list of things I hope to do, we’ve come a long way from our move-in day.

So the first thing you notice about our home is the large front porch and the pretty lake we live on. Here it is decorated for spring–I can’t wait for warmer weather to arrive here so we can enjoy this space again.

In the front door…

To our front hall with the forever in-progress Gallery Wall.

 On one side of the stairs is our Dining Room with its blue ceiling. {Read more HERE}

Through the hallway to the left is our Butler’s Pantry {Read more HERE}.

Behind the Butler’s Pantry is our little Guest Bathroom and guest room.

Across the hall is my Office. {Read more HERE}

Down the hall into the Family Room, here is a picture since I haven’t posted about the entire room yet.

The family room is across from our kitchen {Read all about our kitchen HERE}.

And our adjoining breakfast room with the $30 hutch I remade, you can also read about how we did our open shelving HERE.

Heading upstairs you will find our daughter’s room {Read more HERE}.

And our laundry room {Read more HERE}.

Here is one of our upstairs bathrooms, this was such a fun project {Read more HERE}.

Here is a shot of our boys’ room. They used to share it, but we recently separated them so their rooms are also still ‘in progress’.

Here is a picture of our Master Bedroom {Read the ‘in progress’ post HERE}

So, thanks for hanging in for all that! Since you did, I am going to share a little secret. A few weeks ago, after much consideration my husband and I have listed this home for sale.

Without boring you with details, we have loved living in it, putting our spin on it, and living both on a lake and near the beach, but this area isn’t our home. And the time is right for us to return to what is home in our hearts, where we have family to lean on and dear friends to enjoy.

{So, if you know anyone looking for a house in Virginia Beach please send ‘em my way! 11magnolialane@gmail.com}

In the meantime, the focus of my home projects has shifted a bit and we’re actively searching for our next {and hopefully forever} house. I am excited at the thought of having a new home to decorate, and expect that will mean I will have plenty to share!

Thank you, as always, for stopping by.

Christmas Vignettes (and My Kitchen and Laundry Room Trees)

Our family Christmas tree in my living room is not very glamorous, but that’s okay.  I let my kids decorate it every year, and it’s covered with homemade ornaments of every shape and color.  I love to look at other people’s beautifully coordinated and styled trees {take a look at my friend Andrea’s trees here and here}, and maybe one year I’ll have one, too, but for now, the point is that my kids enjoy our family Christmas tradition, even if that means we wind up with a Charlie Brown tree!

To compensate, I have a small tree in my kitchen and another one in my laundry room.  Why not?

I love my laundry room tree.  It sports a scrap of blue and white ticking stripe fabric around its base, jute twine as “roping”, tiny clothespins as ornaments, and bars of Fels Naptha soap as “presents” under the tree.  I also borrowed from my daughter’s doll house, and so you see the wash tub and board, sewing basket, scissors, and little washer and dryer as part of the decor.  Last year, I used a measuring tape as garland; this year, I kind of liked the twine.  Does anyone else have a tree in their laundry room, or is it just me?

The kitchen tree is nestled in an old Ritz cracker tin (I got that idea from Andrea–thanks, girl!).  I’ve collected kitchen-themed ornaments for several years–my favorites are my mixer, blender, and coffee pot, although my kids are fascinated with the tiny cheese grater and flour sifter!

I didn’t really go over the top with Christmas decorations this year {simplify!}, but I did jazz up our coffee area a bit.  The colorful Christmas subway art is a free printable from Tammy Mitchell photography, and you can download it {here}.

I used one of my homemade banners/garlands over the open shelving in the dining room.  You can read about my “Merry” garland that I used in my outdoor decor {here}.

The vintage decanters always sit on top of my dining room buffet–for the holiday they just got jollied up with a little sign.

My thrift store silver candelabra is sporting festive red wreaths (I tried one on the Venus de Milo’s head, but it didn’t quite fit).

The vintage Santa mugs were my grandmother’s (that’s a picture of her as a little girl on the top shelf).

I decorated the dresser in my front entry for the holiday, using white and silver.

The powder room got a little touch of Christmas, too:

Did you do more or less than you usually do this year when it comes to decorating for the holidays?

Holiday Decor Recap

Hi…I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving, I know we did! I am still out of town so I haven’t started my holiday decorating yet {the above picture is from last year} but I am looking forward to getting back home and getting started. We’ll be getting ready for a great-big-fourth-birthday party next weekend (my daughter’s first official birthday ‘party’!) so I don’t know how much I will get done right away.

Before I even drag my bins out of the attic, I knew I would want to take the time to comb through last year’s holiday posts and find Andrea’s house just for the inspiration. Christy’s sweet and very talented friend let us photograph her house when it was all dolled up for the holidays and it’s a show-stopper. In case you missed it, here are some of my personal favorites:

The above shot is from Andrea’s closet.  Don’t you love the Audrey Hepburn dress and the silver and black tree?  I would love to dress up for a holiday party in this space!

Make sure to check out her entire home tour, click here for Part One and here for Part Two.

Christy’s former home in North Carolina {view the entire tour HERE} was just made to be decorated for Christmas!

Don’t you love this mantel? Just one of something like five {?!} mantels she had in that house, lucky girl!

Even her daughter had her own special tree in her pretty vintage pink room.

And for the kitchen, a tiny tree in the kitchen decorated with cooking ornaments.

 Precious.

I am making a promise to myself to simplify this year. Last year we went all out when our neighborhood had an outdoor decorating contest with a $500 prize.  We did put a tree on our front porch in our zealousness, which was fun for awhile, although it didn’t fare too well when the coastal winds kicked up. We’ll be rethinking that this year!

So, have you all started decorating? Or did you just shop Black Friday? Either one works as far as we’re concerned! We’ll be back with more holiday inspiration and some organizing printables in the next few days. In the meantime make sure to enter the fun giveaway we are hosting for a Fabric Steering Wheel Cover!

XO,
