Mother’s Day {When Your Mom Isn’t Here}

Mom & Me in 1995

Mom & Me in 1995

**Fair warning:  I couldn’t make it through writing this post without some tears, so this is your chance to walk (or run) away if you don’t feel like getting misty today!**

This is for those of you who will wear a white carnation today, instead of a red one.

First, I’d like to wish all of you who are mothers a very Happy Mother’s Day.  What an amazing, excruciating, wonderful, exhausting job!  I wouldn’t trade my kids for the world, but there are a lot of days when you can take my job (mothering) and shove it!  I salute each and every one of you, from one battle buddy to another.

I'm pretty sure my mom is wearing false eyelashes to give me a bath--she has me beat in the glamour department!

I’m pretty sure my mom is wearing false eyelashes to give me a bath–standards were clearly much higher in the ’70′s!

Of course, we all have mothers, too, and this day is also about them.  But that’s not always as simple as it sounds, is it?  For some of us, Mother’s Day is a double-edged sword.  Some of us have mothers who probably shouldn’t have been allowed to have children.  I’m so sorry if your mother was one of them, because it can take a lifetime to recover from that kind of childhood.  Some of us have mothers from whom we’re presently estranged.  If that’s you, then I hope that you can work out your differences and reconcile some day, but I also know that doesn’t always happen this side of heaven.  And some of you are like me–my mom died almost eleven years ago, and so while Mother’s Day always fills me with joy and gratitude when I look at my children, I also feel an aching sadness when I think of my mother (Yes, still.  I probably always will!).  If that’s you, too, then just know that you are not alone today.

One of my mom’s favorite movies was Shadowlands, which was about C.S. Lewis (one of her favorite authors, and mine, too) and the love story between him and his wife, Joy Gresham.  In the movie, she tells him, “The joy now is part of the pain to come.  The pain then is part of the joy now.”   I think that perfectly describes how we feel when we’ve lost someone we deeply love.

There is some comfort.  If you are orphaned (it doesn’t matter if you’re a grown up or a child), God promises you that He will be a father to the fatherless (Psalm 68:5).  He also sets the lonely in families (Psalm 68:6), and since I’m an only child, I’ve learned that many times that “family” is one that is not bound by blood, but by friendship (like my friendship with Amy).  I’ve also been so fortunate to have two wonderful, Godly women take me under their wings and into their hearts–my Aunt Diane and my dear friend, Becky.  They are my Titus 2 friends and surrogate mothers, and they have adopted me, my husband, and my children as their own.  I take comfort that although the family I was born into no longer exists, I am still surrounded by those I love.  I wish you that, too!

My mom’s birthday is in May, as is the day that she died.  Right in between those two is today–Mother’s Day–and a lot of times that makes May a month I would like to ignore altogether.  But this year, in honor of my mother, I thought that I’d share with you the words I wrote as her eulogy, because even though she’s been gone for quite a few years, her life and legacy continue to shape me and others who loved her, and I know that she is a shining example of a life well-lived.

Family and Friends:

I sit here and try to think of a way to do justice to my mother, who was so unique and extraordinary, and I know that I can never write anything that will communicate just how wonderful she was.  But, I also know that all of you who sit here, sharing our joy and our grief, don’t need my words to tell you the things that my mother showed you through the living of her life.

My mother was so many things, all of them remarkable.  I am so thankful that God let me be her daughter and let me have thirty years of knowing and loving her.  I selfishly wish that we could have had many more years together and that she could have watched her grandson grow up, but I take so much strength and comfort in the fact that she is watching him–and the rest of us–from the Lord’s side in heaven.

Mom’s relationship with God was the most meaningful thing in her life, and she took enormous comfort from His promises in Scripture.  She spent time every day reading her Bible and praying, and it seemed like Mom had a “direct line” to God’s ear.  It became a family joke that if we really wanted God to answer a prayer, we should have Mom pray for us.  I believe that God honored Mom’s faithfulness to Him by answering her prayer that she would die quickly and without having to fight a long battle with cancer.

My mother was a lovely person on the inside, where it matters most, and she never forgot that inner beauty is far more significant than the other shell.  My mother was gracious, cheerful, and kind, and always the first to laugh at herself.  She remembered people’s names, and birthdays, and favorite colors, and worked hard to keep in touch with her loved ones.  Not a week passed that I didn’t receive a letter or note from her, and we talked on the phone every day.  I know that she was just as diligent in communicating with her other friends and family.  She was my best friend, but I know that there are many others here who considered her their best friend, too.  I can’t think of a more meaningful tribute to the person that she was.

Mom was a beautiful person on the outside, too, and always took care to present a polished exterior to the world (although she did wonder just last week whether she was using her remaining time wisely by continuing to floss her teeth every night).  She was a good steward of the body God had given her and tried to keep it healthy and fit.  She enjoyed clothes, shoes, and jewelry, and the more colorful and cheerful the better.  I guess I’m more like her than I knew–I had to buy shoes to wear for this service since I didn’t have any with me, and I found myself leaving the store with two pairs instead of one.  Stephanie was with me and bought a pair, too.  We had a laugh and figured that Mom would appreciate that even in the darkest of times, you have to put your best foot forward.

My mother cherished her marriage to Dad and her role as his wife.  My mom and dad have been married for thirty-two years, and their love only deepened and grew stronger as the years went on.  Their utter devotion to God and to each other over the past few weeks is something I will never forget.  Dad’s love for her is so selfless that he rejoices in her freedom and victory over pain and death, even as he faces the loneliness of her absence.  Thank you, Mom and Dad, for showing Chris and me what a marriage can and should be.

I know, too, that my mother loved me more than anything in this world, and that watching Connor and being his grandmother gave her immeasurable joy.  We were together the last few weeks and as always, my mother gave me the strength to face anything, even the unthinkable sadness of her death.  As Chris and I face the challenging task of raising Connor, I have fresh respect for the wonderful example she set for me.

Mom talked a lot about her mother’s death almost seven years ago.  I know that a day didn’t go by without her missing her mother.  She told me that even after so many years, she still thought about Grandma and talked to her every day.  I’m so happy to know that my mom is with Grandma because that, and seeing the Lord, were the two things that made her accept and even anticipate her own death.  I realize now that she was continuing to teach me through her own example.

Mom, thank you for being my mother.  I love you more than I can express, and I will miss you almost more than I can bear, but I have your example to follow, and I will rejoice in and look forward to the fact that our reunion is inevitable.

Thank you for letting me share my mom with you–I know you might have been expecting something much lighter (maybe a recipe or a room redo?!) and I hope I haven’t disappointed any of you.  I love to talk about her, though, because it keeps her alive in my memory, and helps my children to know her, as well as they ever can, by hearing about her.  So if you’re missing your mom today, just know that you’re not alone–and I’m sending {{love}} and prayers your way.

Thanks for stopping by.

Happy Birthday, Amy!

scan0001

1997–at the beach

Today is Amy’s birthday, and since I was raised right, I won’t tell you how old she is.  Also, I was born in the same year (although a few months LATER), so that would also be self-defeating.  However, I think it’s important to mark this occasion by telling you just exactly how awesome she is.

For those of you who are considering an online dating service, I highly recommend you give it a shot.  You see, when we were seniors in high school, the computer at James Madison University matched me and Amy up to be roommates for our freshman year there, based on the survey we took with our admission paperwork.  Given that we’re pretty much still besties a hundred years later, I’d say that was a total success, yes?  It was amazing that we fit anything else into our dorm room given how big our hair was back then, but we managed.

Bridesmaids in 1997

Bridesmaids in 1997

At one point, we dated guys who were roommates, but neither of them “stuck,”  because good things come to those who wait.  We pledged different sororities and lived with different roommates our sophomore year, but stayed close.  We lived together again our junior year with the greatest group of girls ever.

We regularly slept through the Sunday brunch on campus that ended at 2:30pm, yet we all managed to graduate (most of us with advanced degrees) and are successful, productive members of society–go figure!

Amy's beautiful wedding

Celebrating at Amy’s beautiful wedding

Over the years, we’ve weathered bridal showers, weddings, babies (only five between us but sometimes it feels like fifty!), vacations (including December 31, 1999!), funerals, baptisms, birthdays, family debacles, job changes, and enough moves to keep the real estate market smokin’ hot.  Our kids have no choice but to love each other like siblings–one of her sons once drew a “family” picture that included my oldest–and we’ve been known to trade them off for a week in the summer just to keep things interesting.  I thought nothing of Amy and her kids coming to visit right after we moved the last time; I just put her to work sanding kitchen cabinets and we stuck her kids in Vacation Bible School right along with mine.

Bridesmaids in 2000--a recurring theme!

Bridesmaids in 2000–a recurring theme!  I was SO pregnant and miserable–Amy was cool as a cucumber!

Amy and I have an uncanny ability to buy the same jewelry, dress similarly, and cut our hair the same way, all while living hours away from each other.  This has made for interesting photo ops over the years, but it makes buying presents for her a snap!  I think one of the reasons her house feels like “home” to me–and hopefully vice versa–is because she decorates hers exactly the way I want mine to look!  We regularly pass clothes and decor items back and forth because our taste is almost exactly the same.  The only drawback to this is that when we go shopping together, we tend to reach for the same things, and must depend upon our good manners to avoid a catfight!

My favorite house in the world to visit is Amy’s.  She has perfected the art of relaxed hospitality.  You don’t have to follow your kids around her house to make sure they’re not messing things up…they’re allowed to play and have fun.  Nothing in her house is more precious than people, yet it still looks like a magazine, because she’s got such great style.   Meanwhile, she’s always making me something yummy to eat–about 90% of my recipes come from her, which makes for a horrible challenge when SHE comes to MY house–and her husband makes the best drinks ever and is the funniest person in the world.

With the hubsters

With the hubsters in downtown Nashville

If you add all the time up over the years, I have lived in Amy’s house for months.  Many times I come without my husband (because he’s deployed and off protecting the world), but with two kids and sometimes even our pets(!).  While he might roll his eyes to himself, Amy’s sweet husband is so tolerant of me.  I humor myself by thinking that he actually likes us, but I know that mostly he wants to make his wife happy by letting her friend come to visit.  Regardless, I know that we’re always welcome, and we have taken advantage of that so many times over the years.

The firstborn sons--good buddies from the beginning!

 Our firstborns–good buddies from the beginning (not that they had a choice)!

I’ve mentioned this a few times before, but my mom died pretty suddenly when I was 30.  It was May 2002, my son was eighteen months old, and my husband was deployed here and there due to the aftereffects of 9/11.  I was at my parents’ house in Maryland when Mom died–we had been in the initial stages of diagnosing and staging her cancer when she sustained a massive pulmonary embolism.  To say I was unprepared, on every level, to lose my mother would be an understatement.  Here’s what Amy did, without my thinking about it or asking for it:  she and her mother drove over to our house and brought me clothes from her own closet so I would have something to wear for my mother’s viewing and funeral.  She literally gave me the clothes off her back.  I can tell you for a fact that she thinks that was no big deal, but to me it was, and still is, something I can’t even think about without crying.  “A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.”  Proverbs 17:17

At some point, we all realize that true friends are found few and far between.  Can you count your real friends on one hand?  If you can, then you are fortunate.  If you can count them on two hands, then you are rich, indeed.  Well, when I count up my friends, Amy’s either my thumb or my pointer finger, if you know what I mean.  I’m hoping I can be just like her when I grow up, because there’s no one out there who is quite as fabulous.

So, my dear friend, have a wonderful birthday, and thank you for sharpening me as iron sharpens iron for these many years!

The story of 11 Magnolia Lane

Today we are sharing the story of 11 Magnolia Lane.

framed couch marked

I have been thinking about writing a post on the “story” behind our little blog for awhile now. I figured at some point our readers have wondered our connection or maybe the meaning behind the “11 Magnolia Lane’ title and the backstory on how we started all this. Honestly, many days when I turn on my computer and see the sweet comments and the facebook posts I marvel at how we got here too.

Super Cute-- laughing

So, here is the “longer” version of the “About Us” tab. I started a {different} blog as part of my paper (wedding invitations, party design etc.) business in 2009. Whenever I did a project for a wedding or event, I posted it on my little blogspot blog. Most of my followers were my supportive friends. I met Terry during that time as our sons were in preschool together and since she was an event planner there was an instant connection. We started working on weddings and events with our respective businesses, quickly becoming close friends as well. We soon needed to create a website/blog to promote the wedding and charitable event work we were doing together. As we tried to think of a name for the site, we both decided we liked the southern motif and were kicking around using “Magnolia” in the name of the event business.

Terry STep

{Terry}

At the same time, I was reading “party/event” blogs for my business which quickly led to reading home blogs {there were fewer at that time} and I was instantly hooked, after all I love to work on my house as much as I love to entertain. It occurred to me at the time how segmented the blogs were—there wasn’t much crossover {at that time} between the party/event blogs and home décor/DIY blogs and the idea hit me to recruit some talented friends to create a magazine type blog covering all those things like-minded people want to read about. And, as I mentioned in this post on our causes, through our event work, Terry and I were hoping to launch a fun but charitable fundraising event, and we figured a blog would be a great way to spread the word down the road. And, 11 Magnolia Lane was born.

Enter Christy…I have known Christy since my first day of college when– thankfully –the computer assigned us a roommates. We couldn’t be better matched as far as our tastes {y’all probably notice similarities in our decorating, and we tend to reconvene after separating while shopping to find the exact same items in our baskets!} and have stayed close friends in the years since our college days though we haven’t lived near each other since that time. My visits to see her were always the highlight of the summer and it was easy to see how talented she was at decorating her home and entertaining her house guests.

As luck would have it, about the time this type of magazine type blog idea was kicking around in my head, Christy and family had just moved into this stunning home in North Carolina. Each time I visited her I felt like the world needed to see how lovely not just the home was, but the creative ideas she used to decorate and keep her family organized. Before too long, I roped her into joining up with Terry and I to start this little blog. Her pretty house became our initial “brand” and we used a {made up} address of 11 Magnolia Lane, liking the concept of the house and our readers being our welcomed guests.

nc house

We were pretty haphazard when we started, we posted whatever we were up to, and the holidays were upon us so we had plenty of stuff to write about. WordPress picked up Christy’s chalkboard post for “Freshly Pressed” and we suddenly started getting tons of comments on it and before we knew it we were off and running. We sort of played at blogging our first few months, just posting when we felt like it, making a few connections in the blog world and having fun with it. Most of our friends and families probably didn’t even know we were doing it, but it was fun for us.

Garden Shot-1

Things suddenly changed for me when my husband was unexpected transferred across the state shortly after we got the blog rolling. This admittedly threw my life into upheaval with having to close my design business, halt the event work Terry and I were doing, unexpectedly sell our house, find a new house and start completely over in a new area. Terry was working on a major event about the same time and Christy was also moving, {since she is military she rolls with it better then I did!} so we all pulled away from the blog in the summer of 2011, not really thinking or knowing if we’d continue working on it. {Note: that summer was the time Christy remade her new kitchen which eventually got published in Better Homes & Gardens Kitchen & Bath Makeovers, lest you think grass grows under her feet!}.

I suppose after awhile we all missed blogging, after all, we’re pretty type A girls so we constantly have projects going and a blog provides great motivation to keep going, going going! By fall of 2011, we got back to posting again, I had plenty to share about the house we’d just finished having built, Christy was quickly completing makeovers on her new home and Terry started the work on her “In the Kitchen series” of cooking/healthy meal plans—which I was happy to hear she is going to be bringing back soon—and pretty soon we were back in the swing of it all.

couch shot

In the spring of 2012 we planned a weekend to meet up in person to get better organized and get some photography of the three of us done. {FYI for new bloggers, of all the things we’ve done, I think giving the blog the polished look with the new professional photography helped us the most.} We had a great time that weekend, and came back with renewed energy and suddenly 11 Magnolia Lane became not just a hobby but a business.

amy photographed

While we’re on that slightly touchy subject, after all we all just want to read blogs and see beautiful room makeovers and mouth-watering recipes, not advertisements right? Well, that spring we were accepted into the BlogHer network which has been a great relationship for us. They provide occasional sponsored opportunities which help us offset the costs of running a blog, not to mention the personal costs of craft supplies, décor supplies and even sometimes the childcare we need to actually write our posts. We are very, very careful about which opportunites we participate in, trying only to take ones that match our subject/content areas and things we actually endorse, and we appreciate our readers understanding about them.

So we’re now entering a new stage at 11 Magnolia Lane. Terry is still spending time with her gorgeous new baby boy, but she’s got a ton of ideas about healthy eating and menu planning coming up soon. Christy is getting ready for her next move and will have a new house to start making gorgeous—probably a rental home this time which will give a new perspective since many of our readers are renting as well. I am in a new home too, we were fortunate enough to be able to move back to where we lived when we started the blog {just blocks from Terry!}. We don’t know yet if we’ll be able to buy the home we’re in—we hope the owners will sell it to us—so I am also in a quasi-rental situation as well. Christy and I both think this is a great opportunity to show new projects that don’t involve major construction :) . We have some great new things coming up, such as offering decorating/ organizing services in our respective areas and possibly offering some of our favorite home décor items for sale via 11 Magnolia Lane. Christy and I are heading to Haven {anyone else going? We’d love to meet you!} this summer to network with other DIY bloggers. All in all, we think the future is looking bright!

street shot

Thanks to all of you who read us, and especially take time to interact with us via comments, email or on Facebook. As a blogger we all have many, many days where we think—“What am I doing posting my pantry on the internet??? This is totally nuts!” But we enjoy the relationships that we’ve built online and it’s been fun to be a part of this ‘blog-o-sphere’ as it grows.

Did I answer anything you might be wondering? If not, please leave questions in the comments. As always, thanks for stopping by!

XO,

{Amy}

A new baby and a new house!

**Our newest giveaway is up and running over on our Current Giveaways page.  We’re giving away two copies of 31 Days to a Heart of Hospitality, an ebook by our friend Edie over at Life{in}Grace.**

Here is a bit of what’s been going on with the other two of us while Christy’s been covering 11 Magnolia Lane over the last two weeks! She did a great job of course :) She is now in the midst of preparing to move, and winding up the school year, so I told her I would jump back in and give everyone all the news.

First of all, we are SO proud to share our newest resident at Magnolia Lane. Last week Terry and her family welcomed this sweet bundle of joy to their family. I have been lucky enough to spend time with him and can attest he will just melt your heart!

atlas2

Gorgeous photo by Courtney Anderson Photography. He is in his beautiful nursery, see the whole room HERE.

And we’ve completed our move! Well, at least as far as we are able to reside in our home, but we still have boxes everywhere. We really jumped back in our new area with kids’ activities, school events, sporting events and of course, that new baby pictured above to visit  :) so unpacking has taken a backseat.

Our new home is very different from our former lakefront home near the beach. We traded the water view for space, space and more space. Just having a basement for storage the kids to play in is so nice, not to mention all this closet space :) I will be sure to show off more of the house once I get it more presentable but for now here is a bit of a sneak peak via my phone.

dining room

{the dining room}

While we waited for our belongings to arrive, I had a few days in the empty house to make some adaptions so it would match our current cooler, light color scheme. Much of this home is decorated in warmer tones like yellow, mustard, moss green and burgundy.

family room

{the family room}

We discovered the other day that the stripes on the fireplace wall are not what they seem–wallpaper–but actually painted on the wall. I need to find out the scoop on that from the owner, it’s just amazing to me someone could paint perfect stripes on a two-story wall.

front hall

{the front hall}

screen porch

{the screened porch–I have BIG plans for this space!}

I did have a few projects right at the top of my list. First off, my oldest son is moving into the room that was a former office. I tackled removing the flowered wallpaper border, as it is not really my son’s taste. I’ll do a post on that shortly, I learned a lot of what to do and not do removing wallpaper. Here is the room previously, it was an easy fix and after the border came down, the beige walls work perfectly for a preteen boy.

declan room

I also painted the master bedroom. It was formerly dark minty green, and our bedding and accessories didn’t really match. I have been obsessed with the Sherwin Williams color ‘Blue Diamond’ since I saw it in my brother in law’s beach condo last winter. Its the perfect palest blue, with just hints of gray, and couldn’t wait to use it in my bedroom. Had I not just painted my old master bedroom, I would have redone it immediately to that color after our visit.

bedroom after

Unfortunately things didn’t go as planned with the color, it came out WAY more blue then I expected. Here is the repainted room, and while I like it, its obviously not the ‘palest’ blue out there. I am not sure if its the dark green behind {but I used paint with primer?} or perhaps I incorrectly remembered the color and got something else similar instead, or maybe the color was off from being mixed at Home Depot? {Thoughts?} Anyway, lesson learned but I will just live with it–or repaint the room again down the road!

I am off to go unpack, but thanks for stopping by!

Terry’s Baby Shower Details {The Invitations, Menus and More}

queen bee marked

Hi everyone! We took a much needed family vacation to a Magical Kingdom last week (I am still recovering!) so I am just now responding to all your nice comments and am back with more details on Terry’s Baby Shower. If you missed it, the first post on the whole fun event is HERE.

Queen Bee Baby Shower

A whole team (well, three!) of us worked together to pull this off. Our friend Trinity {see the shower Terry hosted for her HERE, and her baby nursery HERE} and our friend Christina. We divided and conquered the tasks, thank goodness for Pinterest, where we used a “secret board” so Terry couldn’t see all our pins during the planning process! Terry has thrown some lovely parties/events for each of us –and for many others as she is an event planner by trade– so we wanted to make the most of the chance to spoil her for a change!

dsc_9267_edited-1 DSC_0093

Today I wanted to share how we did some of the party decor, in particularly the paper. I am so pleased with how the whole event came off, but none of the details were very complicated.

queen bee invitation

I will begin with the invitations. I have the advantage of having had a business making wedding and event invitations, so these weren’t hard. Once we decided on the Queen Bee theme, I knew I wanted to use the yellow damask paper available through my paper supplier Envelopments. {NOTE: Envelopments has the best papers for DIY invitations but its only available through dealers. As luck would have it, I am a dealer for them so email me at 11magnolialane@gmail.com if you need invitation paper to DIY, they have GORGEOUS paper!}

paper for invitesCreating invitations like this is not difficult at all. I have design software but you can simply create a file in any word processing program and print on white cardstock. I used a Bee Graphic from The Graphics Fairy on the top, and then added text. I ordered the paper in both full sheets and 5×7″ cardstock, but you can always cut the regular sheets down to your preferred invitation size which is slightly cheaper but a paper cutter is essential for straight lines, FYI.

invitationsI simply taped the white paper invitation to the cardstock with double-sided tape, the extra layer makes the invite special, adds color and I think the extra thickness makes it feel ‘fancy’ :)

I also lined the envelopes, an extra step for sure, but my favorite special touch. I used scrapbook paper from Michael’s in a variety of patterns, honeycomb, polka dot etc. I made a template out of plain white paper first, and traced it on the back of the scrapbook paper and then cut the shapes out, then you just tape inside your envelope with double-sided tape or even glue.

envelope liner template

queen bee invitation

The final touch was sealing the invitations with a small piece of yellow damask washi tape {found at Michael’s} because I couldn’t resist!

menu card on table

Using the same technique, I made Menu Cards for the table. I also used plain black scrapbook paper, cut a shape I liked out of it and wrote on it with a chalkboard pen to make each guest a place card.

menu card

I added a small square of paper to make the menu card stand up and they were placed along the center of the table.

bottles doneAnother easy touch is to make little custom water bottle stickers. Again, this is SO simple. We intended to send these home with the guests, but wound up distributing them during the extended socializing that went on after the shower events were done. The refreshment was welcome after all the sweet treats and I was very glad we had them to offer.

To make these, simply peel off the existing water bottle label, which is pretty easy to do. Then cut strips of scrapbook paper {we used honeycomb to go with the “Bee” theme} that are large enough to wrap around the bottle. I believe I got five, maybe six, strips per scrapbook sheet for the small Deer Park bottles? Using double-sided tape, just seal them at the back.

water bottlesI then printed a small design on full-sized label paper. Using a round punch, I cut out the “Bee is for Baby” and then just stuck them in the center. You can find plenty of these designs on ETSY if designing something like this is intimidating, then just print it yourself, punch each one out and you have a practical and cute party accent.

bottle signs

Phew! I will be back with a few more details, especially regarding the favors and some of the decor but for now I will leave it at that. If you have questions, please let me know in the comments.

Thanks for stopping by!

Happy New Year!!!

Looking back on 2012, what a year it was here at 11 Magnolia Lane!

We just wanted to take a moment and share some of our highlights, thank a few friends, and pass on a few things.

Early in the year, Terry and Christy and I got together for a much needed Girls’/Blog Pow-Pow weekend. Thanks to Jessica Oatman for taking a whole bunch of professional photos for us.

Shortly after that, we got the news that Better Homes & Gardens wanted to feature Christy’s kitchen. That magazine should be on newstands any day {we can’t wait!}. Her NC pantry is also being featured on the DIY Network website, and HouseLogic.

We were lucky enough to be featured at some of our favorite blogs.  Click HERE to see us on Feature Friday at Southern Hospitality,  Click HERE to see our feature at I {heart} Organizing, and Click to see us at Eclectically Vintage. Thank you so much to those girls for being so kind to write about us!

We had some of our favorite bloggers stop by and guest post. Ashli from MiniManor, Christina from Remodelando la Casa and Jessica from Four Generations One Roof. We so appreciate them lending their talents to our little spot in the blogosphere.

We made friends all over the DIY blog world. So many kind bloggers featured our posts, like Amanda at Serenity Now, Kristin from My Uncommon Slice of Surbubia, Sarah at Thrifty Decor Chick, Courtney from A Thoughtful Place come to mind, but we know we are forgetting some other wonderful blogs.

Terry shared her BIG news that she is expecting a baby this Spring, which can only mean ONE thing–we are now planning a baby shower and decorating a nursery! Woo Hoo!

We started our Facebook page and thanks to Christy’s hard work and the popular antics of her golden retriever, Harley, our page has grown to over 1100 “likes” in a short period of time. We also started “tweeting,” {@11magnolialane} and while we’re still figuring all that out {thanks, Stephanie!}, it has become our “go-to” social media when we find something at Homegoods that we think you all need to know about!

We each chose and wrote about our special cause. We are proud to share in giving back anytime we can.

Finally, so many of you take time to leave us comments, drop us notes and interact on Facebook and Twitter. Like all of you, we have busy lives and kids and while we often miss the chance to reply, or comment back on your site, each comment means the world to us. Know that we read each one, and we appreciate each of you more then you know.

We all have some big things coming up in the New Year–babies, moves and new opportunities. We can’t wait to see what our year-end post looks like 365 days from now!

Happy New Years! We wish you all peace, prosperity and joy in 2013.

XO,

Terry, Amy & Christy

Our Top Posts of 2012

Happy New Year everyone! This year just FLEW  by, didn’t it?

We thought we’d do a quick recap of our top {the ‘most read’ according to google analytics} posts this year, just in case you missed anything :)

Christy’s North Carolina Pantry lives on…and on…and on, thanks to Pinterest {oh, how we love thee, Pinterest!}

Christy’s Kitchen Makeover follows next.  The Better Homes & Gardens Real-Life Kitchens & Baths issue featuring this kitchen should be out any day!

Christy’s Kitchen Re-do

Her adjacent Laundry Room also got prettied up, and it’s another “top post.”  This room is in the current issue of Cottages & Bungalows magazine!

 My Kids’ Bathroom makeover follows next. I called it a Part 1 post because I intended on doing some more work to the mirror, but that will have to fall into our “goals” post, I suppose!

Terry’s Kids’ Learning Center is our next most-read post; her basement is amazing and such a great use of space.

Next up is Christy’s {New} Pantry Makeover.  In this post she also reveals that Better Homes is on their way to photograph her house for this spring’s Kitchens special issue.

Next up is a post with a great tip–an easy way to hang silver platters on the wall.

This tutorial post was next with a very useful chalkboard  “Out of Treats” sign to end Halloween on your terms :)

 Terry’s Camping Themed Birthday party she threw for her son is our last but not least, “most popular” post.

As always, thanks for visiting us! We are looking forward to an exciting 2013.

XO,

We decided to pull all our ideas together in hopes that some our our “favorites” for gifts and for ourselves :) will brighten your day in some way or another this holiday season.

Here are Amy’s top favorites to share:

Bath & Body Works Wallflower Fragrances

The “Winter” scent is divine, as is “Warm Vanilla Sugar” They make the house smell delicious!

These mugs are from Crate & Barrel’s Holiday Line, perfect for hot cocoa or just sitting prettily on a shelf!

Isotoner I Phone Gloves

IPhone friendly gloves are a necessity in the winter! How frustrating is it to forget you are wearing gloves and try swiping at your phone in vain?

Thymes Frasier Fir Fragrances

This amazing fragrance makes your whole house smell like Christmas. They have sprays and cleaners too, you can find it online or order it from one of our favorite stores, like Carter & Spence in Warrenton, VA.

Christy’s favorites include the decadent Lollia handcreams, they are great for hostess presents or stocking stuffers.

Lollia

{We are in good company, these were on Oprah’s list last year too :) and are available on Amazon and lots of other retailers. }

And, a great kids treat:

Crayon Wallets

Every child needs a crayon wallet, they are so cute and go anywhere with you. Perfect for times when some entertainment on-the-go is needed! These are available from a variety of sellers on ETSY.

Another GREAT source we’ve found for gifts {or just little goodies for ourselves} in case you haven’t caught the buzz is www.VeryJane.com

Just enter your email and you can see their awesome and ever-changing supply of goodies like these coffee holders or scarves.

Home Goods/ TJ Maxx Gift Card Giveaway AND My Magazine Debut!

***THIS GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED.***

Well, I’ve got two fun things to announce and it’s hard to choose what to talk about first.  I think I will have to show you…drumroll, please…my laundry room in a magazine!

I stopped into Lowe’s yesterday just to see if the January issue of Cottages & Bungalows was on newsstands–and honestly wasn’t expecting to see it yet–but there it was!  I bought two copies :) and turned to page 13.  There was my laundry room!  Yeah!

You can read ALL about my laundry room redo {here}.

I entered Whisperwood Cottage’s Organizing Solutions Talent Scouting Party in September, and was so surprised (and pleased!) in October to be chosen as one of the six winners.  The process was easy, because they used my photos instead of coming out to do a shoot (you can read about my kitchen photoshoot, which will be on newsstands soon, {here}), and everyone was so very kind and easy to work with.

I think the part that makes me happiest is that one of the editor’s favorite things was my grandmother’s aqua Ball canning jars, that I use to hold borax, Oxyclean, and baking soda.  Grandma’s going to turn 94 in a few days, and I’m going to send a copy of the article to her in her card so that she can see her jars in print!

Okay, now, moving on to the next fun thing…

We hit 1,000 Facebook fans just a couple of days ago.  Thanks so much to all of you!  I do most of the Facebook posting, while Terry handles Twitter and Amy handles emails and blog administrator duties (she has the hardest job, by far!).  I have so much fun chatting with y’all on Facebook!  If you only follow us one way, you’re missing out on some of the fun–like how Facebook folks knew the back story behind my dog pee porch decor!

{Sorry this giveaway is now closed}

So, because we love you all, we’re giving away a $50 gift card to Home Goods/ TJ Maxx (yes, it works at both stores).  We know you can use a little extra cash around Christmas, and you’re welcome to spend it on presents, or yourself–we’ll never tell!

Here’s how to enter for the $50 Home Goods/ TJ Maxx gift card:

1. Follow 11 Magnolia Lane via email, Facebook, or twitter.  If you already follow, that’s great!  Leave us one comment below telling us you’re following. (1 entry)

2.  Share this giveaway with your peeps via your blog, Facebook, or Twitter and leave a comment below telling us so.  (1 entry)

So, you have up to two chances to enter and can have up to two comments below–each comment is an entry.  Make sense?  Let me know if not!

**The giveaway will end Monday, December 10th at 12noon (central time), and we’ll announce the winner by Tuesday or Wednesday.  Good luck!**
