How to Embellish a Lamp Shade

One of my favorite easy tricks to customize my lamps is to add a ribbon edge to the lampshade. You’ve seen it before in my house on my little blue and white lamp, but I don’t think I ever wrote about how I did it.

That’s probably because it’s so darned simple…but, of course, that’s my favorite kind of DIY project!

My upstairs office in the MCC House needed a lamp to balance things out.  I found this faux marble one at WalMart, believe it or not, and I loved the square shade, but felt like it was a little plain.

They also carry my very favorite gold Greek key ribbon (all sources are listed at the end of the post), so I grabbed a roll and my glue gun and got to work.

Some lampshades look best if you just embellish the top, or the bottom, but this one seemed to need both.

Lampshades with straight edges are easiest to do because it’s not as tough to keep the ribbon straight, but you can edge a rounded shade, like on my blue and white lamp below.

Ribbon that isn’t wire-edged works best, and I just put a very thin line of hot glue on the top and bottom edges of the ribbon, working with about 4-5″ at a time.

Brontë couldn’t resist “helping” with all that tempting ribbon dancing around!

I’ll show the rest of my little office off in my next post, but in the meantime, here are a few shots of how this little lamp finished off one corner of my space.

  1. Love it Christy. And agree, square or drum shape are easiest. My katie had more patience than me, and put the ribbon on mine that are a bit smaller on top than bottom. love the gold Greek key ribbon.

I just picked up my new lamp from WalMart….ordered it online and picked up at the store for free shipping. I attached the Greek Key ribbon and it’s gorgeous! No one will know it’s plastic and not marble! Love this idea..and the lamp+ribbon less than $30.
