I thought I’d jump in today and share with you all my next home project–my teen son’s bedroom makeover. This room redo has been a long time coming, I am still waiting on all the parts and pieces to arrive but I pulled together all the elements for you to see what we’re currently working on.

My son has hinted more than once that he’d like to have his decor blogger mom give his room some love.  I actually really like how his room currently looks (you can see it below, and no it’s never this clean!), but I see his point that it isn’t a reflection of who he is. It might have a bit more of me in it than him, so I have been promising him for awhile that his room would be next up on my project list.

I stalled on starting it last year since we briefly had our house on the market and I figured I’d wait until we moved, but with his time left living at home flying by, I figured I’d better do something sooner rather than later.  Since we still plan to build a new home, all of the elements I selected for this house will easily transition into a new space. I also am keeping in mind that in just a few short years he’ll be heading to college, so I have been very budget conscious in our selections.

I love this room with the IKEA buffalo check bedding and the retro iron bedframe, but my son does not. He has said on a number of occasions he thinks bed looks like it came from an asylum 😂 . His style is much more polished and preppy, and he’s NOT at all into rustic, chippy, and worn-looking stuff even if his mom is. We looked at some bed options online and I tried to convince him that this nailhead upholstered headboard would work perfectly, because at it’s $64 price point it’s definitely budget-friendly, but I could tell he wasn’t sold. We wound up ordering his choice, which is this darker wood headboard and I admit it is more refined and more suited to his taste.

His new bedding will resemble his current bedding but will be new (his set is getting past its prime) and we will switch to navy blue check this time. Most importantly, I ordered a tailored dust ruffle so we can maximize the storage under his bed but still keep all his teenage boy junk stuff hidden.

His room is not large and quite honestly I have configured and reconfigured his furniture in my mind to try to make more space. Being in high school he really needs to have a desk in his room, which he currently does not.  While I didn’t include this in the inspiration photo, we will add a desk {and a large bulletin board for him to hang his high school memorabilia} directly across from the bed. Right now, I am leaning toward this desk below, it is very similar to the one in Christy’s son’s room. The size of this desk is compact and since he already has a large bookshelf to the right of the bed (not shown in the photo) to store his books it should work out nicely.  The bookshelves do need some organizing, so I’m adding a few more of these metal baskets to them.

His wall color is currently Pale Oak by Benjamin Moore, it’s a nice basic beige neutral, great for a boy’s room.  I am considering painting the wall behind the bed navy blue, or I may wait until our next home, even though I already have a gallon of Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy paint here all ready to go.

Pale Oak by Benjamin Moore in Boys Room

Benjamin Moore Paint Hale Navy in a Boy's RoomI am having a large canvas print made from a picture from our family vacation house in Maine, it will  hang over his bed. Of all my kids, this one loves Maine (and fishing!) the most. He goes up each year with his grandparents to help open up the cabin and literally do the heavy lifting {like getting the dock in the water} so we can all enjoy the place over the summer. I’ll also include some inspirational artwork, because well I am his Mom and I only have a few years left to saturate him with scripture, right?

Finally, our house has no wiring for overhead lighting in the kid’s bedrooms {seriously, why?} so I’ll be adding these plug-in wall sconces. This way he’ll have plenty of light for reading in bed without taking up space on his small nightstand {you can just barely see it but he inherited a vintage telephone table from his great-grandfather’s law office, I’ll be sure to show it to you once the room in done}, which is next to the bed.

So I am waiting for the UPS man to bring all the components then we’ll get to work with this redo. We’re also working on the adjacent bathroom that my boys share to give that space a bit of an update, so I’ll have that to show off shortly too.

If the idea of a full-sized “asylum” bed {HA!} doesn’t deter you, and you are local to the Virginia/DC area, I’ll be selling his iron bed. Just message me at amy@11magnolialane.com if you are interested.

XO,

LOVE your design for your son’s room! BTW, this evening I visited with a young lady who sells BeautyCounter skin care. I was really impressed and will start replacing my skin care products as soon as possible! Love the cleansing balm! Thanks for passing this line of skin care on to us!

    • Thanks so much, I am so glad you like the Beauty Counter products. How nice to have someone to meet with in person. I can’t wait to hear what you think after you use them for awhile! Best, Amy

  3. I like his current room too. But it could be considered a little young but I don’t think so. Have fun doing a project with your son. My husband is blessed with most son fun.

I love the new bedroom components!

    • Thanks! I know, it is fun to share something with him (other than just driving him around!) LOL…thanks for your kind words 🙂 Amy
