There are few recipes that I make over and over again, because they are just that good. My Aunt Diane’s sharp mustard recipe is one those tried and true staples in my kitchen. I’ve shared it before, along with some cute Easter printables, because obviously mustard and ham belong together!
However, I just made a batch for our Thanksgiving festivities, because we’re going to have ham one night, too, and thought I’d share how I used part of the recipe to gift to a few special people, because it makes 32 ounces and there’s always plenty to share.
As we all know, packaging makes all the difference–didn’t these turn out so pretty?
I’ll share the recipe and then my sources for the jars, tag, and baker’s twine.
Homemade Sharp Mustard Recipe
Ingredients
- 3.5 ozs dry mustard (usually 2 jars/bottles)
- 1 c. apple cider vinegar
- 1 egg
- 1 c. sugar
- 1/2 t. salt
- 1-1/2 c. mayonnaise
Instructions
-
Combine the dry mustard and vinegar in a bowl and let stand for 8-12 hours (I’ll usually do this before I go to bed). Beat the egg (I do this in a medium saucepan off heat so I make fewer dirty dishes), and then add the sugar, salt, and mustard/vinegar mixture. Cook over medium heat until thickened. Cool and then stir in the mayonnaise. Pour into jars and keep refrigerated.
I stirred in a few teaspoons of whole mustard seeds this time and thought that added nice texture. This mustard is sharp–it has a nice bite to it–it will taste great with all pork, but especially spiral-sliced hams with honey glaze.
Sometimes I’ll package the mustard in four half pint Ball jars, like these:

I found these absolutely adorable hexagonal jars that hold 3.75 ounces and I like them better, because this way I can share with twice as many people. And they are just SO cute!

The darling “So Very Thankful for You” tags are available as a free download at She Wears Many Hats {here}. I thought these would be a great small pre-Thanksgiving gift for a few special people. You can print them and cut them out; I modified them a bit and printed them on Avery 22802 labels since I already had those on hand.
