~Thrift Store Tray Gets a Bright Makeover~

A few months ago, I was making my usual weekly stop into Goodwill, when I came across the cutest breakfast in bed tray.  It was dark red and $5, which seemed expensive to me (for a thrift store, at least!) but I saw potential.  I debated painting it white or black, my usual colors, and using it in the kitchen or the screened porch, but then I thought it would also make a cute piece for my daughter’s room, which we’re currently updating with pops of watermelon pink (read my first post on her room HERE).  Enter my trusty can of spray paint…I used Krylon’s “Watermelon” gloss and gave it a couple of coats.  Here’s how it turned out:

When I first sprayed the top, it looked a little bare, so I used my Silhouette Cameo and some white vinyl to make a monogram to put on top.  The font is a free one called “Contribute” and it’s one of my favorites for monograms.  My daughter is a Francophile and wants to bring a little bit of Paris into her room, too, so I debated putting something French on the tray, but I want to avoid “Paris Overkill” if at all possible!

The more I get to know this little tray, the happier I am that I spent so much $$ on it. :)  The legs fold under and secure so it can be used as a regular tray, too, if we ever want to put it on top of her bookshelf or desk as a display piece.

I’ll continue to share pieces from her room as we go, and hopefully we’ll have the full reveal for you in a week or two!

Thanks for stopping by.

Kitchen Hutch Makeover {Craig’s List Find}

I am jumping right to the “After’ for this, but after months of searching, I finally found the perfect piece for my kitchen on Craig’s List. It was perfect in size, look and best of all–price, it was only $30!!! It had been donated to a church, and it was even relatively close by, I couldn’t get there fast enough to pick it up.

I have been looking for something like this since before Christmas, so #1 Craig’s List lesson learned– have patience and the perfect piece will eventually appear-and maybe even for a bargain price of $30!

Once I got it home, I unfortunately discovered that it had an unappealing odor (perhaps even from smoke) as well as the lovely, typical, thrift store/mildew smell. After some google research, I tried every tactic I found that would supposedly eliminate the smell–leaving it in the sun for a few days, cleaning it well, wiping it out with vinegar, using odor blocking primer and sanding it very, very well.

It smells perfectly fine now, so something worked.

I chose the paint color Benjamin Moore’s Silver Bells, a nice pale gray. I wanted to coordinate the hutch with my white cabinets but have it still feel like a furniture piece. Ideally, I would have used chalk paint, but there aren’t any retailers here at the Beach, and  unfortunately I completed the project just before my visit to Janet’s store. Chalk paint would have certainly saved quite a bit of work.

I also wanted to use chicken wire to add interest, which was one of the reasons I was happy to find a cabinet that already had glass doors (and easy-to-remove glass at that). I wasn’t sure where exactly the chicken wire would go, until my son accidently broke one of the glass inserts for the side.  I may even eventually replace all the glass with the wire because I love how it looks.

The hardware on it was already perfect, and its even has a light in the top section if I ever want to use the fixture. It adds some nice (and needed) storage to our kitchen, and for $30 plus some paint, I couldn’t be happier with how it turned out.

Thanks for stopping by! I am finishing up the workroom today–stay tuned, its coming along great!

Garden Butterfly 1st Birthday Party

Garden Butterfly Party

This past weekend Amy and I were invited to our dear friend Trinity’s home to celebrate her daughters first birthday.  I’m not sure if you all remember but Amy and I threw Trinity a baby shower in honor of this sweet little blessing last June (click here to check it out).   Needless to say, I cannot believe that we are already celebrating her daughter’s 1st birthday!! How does time go by so fast?  Trinity went all out creating an amazing Garden Butterfly Party for her daughter.

Proud parents!! Courtesy of LuMa Images
Custom made party hat for baby Siler

Trinity choose a yellow, aqua and orange color scheme that was perfect for July and stood out with all the green grass in her back yard.  The bright colors really made the party pop with excitement from both the kids and the adults.  I loved all the little details she carefully placed on each and every table and chair.  She really created the perfect event that no one will ever forget!

Umbrella tables were a hit on this hot and sunny July day!

Everything was decorated even the resin chairs. I love the bright mix of colors.

Trinity alternated the aqua and yellow chair ties

Each cocktail table was cinched with a colorful chair tie and displayed a photo of baby Siler- it was such a sweet personal touch.

The children’s tent was just a colorful and as festive as the adult area.  Each chair had a polka dot aqua ribbon embellished with white daisy .  Trinity created some amazing bright yellow carnation balls that she hung from the top of the tent.  Lastly, she attached large Monarch butterflies around the perimeter which tied the Garden Butterfly theme together perfectly.

The children’s tent was perfectly decorated- look at those hanging flower balls!!
The kids chairs were perfectly polished! Each yellow chair was adorn with an aqua bow and a bright daisy!

Even the kids chairs got some added decor. Aqua polka dot ribbon adorn with a large daisy!

Each child recieved their very own (no spill) mason jar filled with lemonade and sprite.

Look at this cake that Trinity made.  It is just too pretty to eat!  She also had two different types of cupcakes for the adults and the children.  They were delicious and adorable.

Amazing homemade cake!!
Cupcakes with flowers and butterflies for the Adults
Butterfly and bug cupcakes to please both the girls and boys at the party!

Trinity had two adorable activities planned for the kids.  The first was a craft station where you could create your very own butterfly mask.  The girls LOVED this station, they were all so creative!!!  The second was a bug hunt.  She gave each child a net to collect bug goodie bags placed along the perimeter of her yard.  I am not sure which activity the kids loved more, they were both equally creative and fun.

The kids were able to create their own butterfly mask.

Look at all that glitter!!
Look at her beautiful butterfly mask- so creative!

You would think that bug hunt goodie bags and masks were plenty to give away but they children also received this beautiful parting gift.

Parting Gift: Grow your own sunflower!

As you can see, this party was over-the-top amazing.  Trinity created a beautiful event that she can look back on with pride.  Here are a few more photos from our friend Michelle over at LuMa Images.  How lucky Trinity is to have all these wonderful photos to look back on and remember her daughter’s very special garden butterfly birthday celebration.

Mama and baby ready to blow out her candle

Look who just turned 1 and is WALKING!!
     Peek-a-boo birthday girl!!
Mr. Len turned the sprinklers on and the kids LOVED the cool surprise!!
Adorable Girl!!

Happy Birthday!!!

Carnival-Striped Side Table for My Big (Little) Girl’s Room

My 8-almost-9-year-old’s room is getting another facelift–not a huge redo, just a little tweaking.  When we moved to Nashville last summer, she told me she was done with the pink and green bedroom she had in our old house (below):

Sigh.  I loved that room!  But, I understood that she was ready to be done with pink.  She chose a pale aqua for the walls and we paired it with white and celery green.  It was nice and peaceful, but that’s not really what she had in mind.  I talked it over with her and we decided that bold punch of color would help jazz the room up a bit.  After much deliberation (red? peach?) she actually decided on watermelon pink.  Yes.  PINK.  Again.  Granted, a brighter shade than she’d had before, but still, pink.  I had a quick giggle and got to work.

When I grabbed this little table at a yard sale for $3, it was brown and kind of homely.  The first time I painted it, it wound up with a pink top (Krylon’s Ballet Slipper, I think) and white legs, and an awesome pom pom fringe trim.

Sometimes this little table was used as a nightstand, and sometimes it went at the foot of the bed, depending on the time of year.  When we moved to Nashville, it lost its pom pom fringe and gained a celery green top:

In case you’re wondering, I loved both of those previous iterations, but hey, you’ve got to roll with the changes!  It’s her room, after all, and for $3 I can’t exactly complain that it’s an expensive antique.

When we decided to add pops of watermelon pink throughout the room, I thought about painting an awning stripe on the table top.  I simply measured the width of the top (21″) and divided by 3″ as I thought that would be a good width for the stripes.  I decided to use three different colors:  aqua, pink, and green.   After measuring and taping off my stripes with blue painter’s tape, I got to work.  Here’s the result:

The paint colors were kind of random.  I didn’t paint the green at all as it was already there–that was Krylon’s Celery Green spray paint.  The blue was from the wall paint we used in her room (I think it’s Behr’s Ionic Sky) and the pink is actually from one of those little acrylic paint bottles that costs $1 at the craft store.  If you wanted to use spray paint, Krylon’s Watermelon is a close match.  I used that color to spray the big “A” over the table–that used to be celery green.

Once I added some knick knacks to the table, the look was done.  I moved the multi-colored fabric strip shade to her nightstand as it competed too much with the table.  You’ll see it soon enough when I reveal her updated room.

I just noticed that her cord cover is missing…it must have gone with the other lamp.  Oh, well, that’s how we roll–there’s always SOMETHING that needs fixing up!

I’ve loved all the “lives” of this little table and don’t doubt she’ll get another makeover or two before my girl grows up and moves out.  The moral of the story is:  don’t be afraid to change things around every so often.  Paint is cheap!

Stay tuned for more–the room will be done (again) soon.   Thanks for stopping by!

The Empty Nest {A wonderful new shop}

Terry and I were so excited when we heard that our ‘blog’ friend Janet from The Empty Nest was opening a store on Main Street in Warrenton, VA. We couldn’t wait to see all her beautifully painted furniture and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in action.

I was in the same area last week {working on my Mother’s Work/Craft Room} and so we made a shopping event out of visiting the store during her opening and finally got to meet Janet in person. {If you don’t know her blog, please visit her HERE.}

Terry & I with Janet at the opening of her new store, The Empty Nest

She is as uplifting and radiant as you would expect from reading The Empty Nest and her new store is filled with all sorts of beautifully redone furniture and other wonderful goodies.

She is a stockist for Annie Sloan and regularly gives workshops {I am planning another trip so I can make sure to attend the next workshop} and is a wealth of knowledge about furniture and paint.

Each piece of furniture is unique, but all are beautiful.

She also sells some fabulous finds from other small businesses like these delicious candles. I was so overwhelmed deciding among all the delicious smells, I somehow didn’t buy one, but will be loading up on my next visit.

Even her checkout table was gorgeous. I think I will steal her fabric treatment style for my Mom’s sewing table.

And, a wine rack to hold paper rolls–wrapping paper? Art paper? She has creative ideas everywhere you look.

Its exciting to see and hear about all the new creatively inspired businesses coming to Old Town Warrenton.  Make sure you stop by and visit Janet and the Empty Nest at 92 Main Street, Old Town Warrenton, Virginia.

{Warrenton is located approximately 40 minutes outside Washington DC, read more HERE and HERE}

Good luck Janet! We’ll definitely be stopping in again soon.

A Craft/Workroom in Progress

I was beyond touched when my Mom asked me if I would makeover her craft/sewing/ironing/wrapping/decor storage {from here on out I will just call it her “workroom”, as she does!} room for a birthday present this year.

Here is the before…

The room, which is in their basement, was finished by the previous owners into an exercise room, which will explain the huge mirror on one wall. Its a nice size room, and how nice is it that she has a space that can be dedicated to these type of pursuits.

My challenge was the kind of thing I love, to figure out how to store all these assorted items, create a space for her to sew, wrap gifts and iron, plus of course, make the room beautiful so she would enjoy spending time in there.

{I should disclaim that the rest of my parents home is perfectly clean, organized and decorated. This is the basement space in the home where things that didn’t belong in the other perfectly clean and organized spaces just accumulated!}

I had visions of being a little further along with this project by the end of this week, but all in all, we came pretty far considering I had three kids in tow that required their fill of pool time and summer fun, I battled a virus and we started from complete scratch in the room on Monday morning.

First off Monday morning, we went out to pick paint. We already knew our color scheme (she wanted pale green and rose pink). Because the room has no windows (part of the reason that we left the mirror on the wall to reflect light, the other reason would be the drywall damage that would ensue from taking it down), I went straight to a Benjamin Moore Natura paint, which they promise is almost odorless. While it was expensive, it was amazing in its coverage, and truly had hardly any paint odor.

My Mom selected Apple Blossom as the color.

Next we went fabric shopping, unfortunately to no avail due to the small fabric selection in her area, so we came home and ordered fabric online. My plan is to head home and work on the fabric accents and bring them back in another week or so and hopefully finish the room up.

Finally, sweet Terry tagged along with me to IKEA and we came home with all this (and much more not shown) to tackle storage issues in the room.

Today, Terry and I knocked out assembling the Billy bookcases, and went over final plans and storage strategies for the room.

She also came up with the brilliant plan to use this table (which had just been sitting right outside the room being used for another purpose) instead of having to create a new built-in work table for the alcove.

So, we have to head back home (across the state) this weekend but I will be back to finish this room up, hopefully in the next week or two. Its hard to leave it half done, but my Mom is being patient and in the end, I am hopeful the result will be worth it.

Here is the current To-Do List:

  • Paint new worktable white
  • Decorative finish on the wall behind the bookcases
  • Hang Chandelier
  • Paint her sewing cabinet, and makeover chair
  • Make the fabric accents
  • Miscellaneous Items {since my Mom reads our Blog, everything else falls under this category so I can keep a few things I have planned for her a surprise}
Its been a great week, with lots of fun seeing old friends mixed in with the projects–the perfect summer week in my opinion! So, stay tuned for the full reveal, I can’t wait to see it done either.

Middle Eastern Vegetable Salad

Middle Eastern Salad Courtesy Ina Garten

I have to give credit to Amy for sharing this tasty and healthy little salad with me.  It is perfect for summer, a wonderful side to share at your next pot luck and a high protein vegetarian meal tossed in one bowl.  This salad comes from the Barefoot Contessa, How Easy Was That cookbook.  She is my personal favorite food network star, I have all her books and I really enjoy everything she creates.  This salad will not disappoint you so bon appetit!!

Chick Peas are super high in folic acid, zinc and molybdenum (helps the body detox naturally).

Ingredients

  • 10 scallions, white and green parts, thinly sliced
  • 1 pound ripe tomatoes, seeded, cored, and 1/2-inch-diced
  • 1 hothouse cucumber, halved lengthwise, seeded, and 1/2-inch-diced
  • 1 can or jar (12 to 16 ounces) chickpeas, rinsed and drained
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 1/3 cup chopped fresh mint leaves
  • 1/3 cup julienned fresh basil leaves
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (4 lemons)
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic (3 cloves)
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/2 cup good olive oil
  • 8 ounces good feta cheese, 1/2-inch-diced
  • Toasted pita bread, for serving

This is a one bowl meal and allows for easy clean-up!!

Directions

  1. Place the scallions, tomatoes, cucumber, chickpeas, parsley, mint, and basil in a large salad bowl and toss to combine.
  2. In a small bowl or measuring cup, whisk together the lemon juice, garlic, 2 teaspoons salt, and 1-teaspoon pepper. Slowly whisk in the olive oil to make an emulsion. Pour the dressing over the salad, tossing gently to coat all the vegetables. Add the feta, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and toss gently. Serve the salad with the toasted pita bread.

Christy’s Powder Room Redo–Just Add Beadboard!

Drumroll, please, because this is my first room redo in a long time (since the kitchen photoshoot, I think)!  Let me first inform y’all that this is only Part 1 since the room isn’t quite done (are they ever?) but it’s good enough to show it off a little bit.

Our downstairs powder room was always too dark for me.  While the previous owners had done a pretty faux finish on the walls (gold tones over chocolate brown), the dark paint color combined with the limited light sucked all the light out of the room.  I like white, and light colors, so I knew the bathroom would need a redo at some point.

Here’s what the room originally looked like:

The gold leaf mirror was heavy and obviously very expensive, so I wanted to save that.  It was also my intention to leave the faucet, sink, and toilet intact, and maybe just change out the light fixture.

I HAD to use my flash in here even though that doesn’t give us a very pretty result, but the room was too dark to shoot otherwise.

Hubby headed out of town for six weeks for work, and as usually happens when he goes away, I decided this was the perfect time to start the project.  The kids could happily eat cereal and frozen pizza for dinner for a few days, right?

I started by giving the ceiling and the top half of the walls a coat of flat white paint (I just used the Ultra Pure White by Behr at Home Depot).  I was pleasantly surprised that it only took two coats to cover that brown, and I didn’t have to sand the walls as the texture of the faux finish was smooth.

I will tell you that even with just the top half of the walls painted, the transformation was immediate.  The light was fantastic, even though there’s only one vanity light over the sink and no overhead light).  I knew I’d made the right decision!

Our last house, in North Carolina, had white beadboard in the bathroom, and I loved the cottage-y feel of it.  I also like the fact that it was taller than the standard 32″ and 36″ installations.  I decided to cut my bead board to 48″ high.  I bought the long packages (they’re 96″ tall) and cut them in half on my miter saw.  I still don’t have a table saw…soon!

Installing the beadboard was actually pretty easy.  I did use construction adhesive on the back of the panels and my brad nailer to secure the panels in place once I’d positioned them on the wall.  I’ve always been a little scared of my nail gun (correction: scared of my air compressor and the LOUD noises it makes!) and this project forced me to learn to use it by myself since Chris wasn’t around to help me.   The brad nailer made the job about a million times easier.

Because my house is neither trim NOR square, as I discovered when building shelves in my pantry (read about that HERE), the panels were a little wonky at the corners.  I did the best I could, and figured caulk and paint would help as I finished the project.  I had some screen trim left from my pantry shelves and put a piece of that in two of the corners to cover up some small gaps.  I was right, when I was done caulking and painting it was impossible to tell.

I wasn’t sure how I’d manage to install the beadboard around the toilet and the sink.  I lucked out with the toilet as my water pipes come up from the floor (in some of our houses they come through the wall) so I didn’t have to remove the toilet or the tank; however, I did have to remove the pedestal sink to put the beadboard behind it.  THAT was fun–not!  Plumbing work always involves standing on your head while screwing or unscrewing connections with the perilous possibility of dropping porcelain and having to buy a new one.  But, I persevered and got that sucker off the wall.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but getting it back into place was going to be more work than removing it! :)

Here we are with no sink!

“Measure twice, cut once” takes on new meaning when you’re measuring for pipe openings.  This was also a chance to use that hole-cutter-attachment thingy for my drill that I’d always wondered about.  How nice and easy it made the job!  Oh, and you can see the two holes in the wall where the toggle bolts for the sink attach…I had to buy new ones as the old ones fell into the wall when I removed the sink.  I wouldn’t have thought of that ahead of time!

Since the bead board was 48″ high, I also had to cut openings for the light switch and outlet.  I think a jig saw would have been the appropriate tool here, but I don’t have one, so I used a utility knife to saw away at the back of the beadboard and make the openings.  Don’t forget to use outlet spacers whenever you’re adding something like bead board or board and batten to a wall; that way your switches and outlets won’t look sunken into the wall.

Finally, I had to trim the top of the beadboard.  I used pine finger joint board and cove molding to create the top trim and glued and nailed them into place.  The finger joint pieces are sold in 1″ x 2″ x 8′ sections and then I cut them with my miter saw.  The cove molding went underneath to create a smooth transition between the finger joint board and the bead board.  The cove molding was the only thing that wasn’t pre-primed, but two coats of paint still covered everything.  Oh, and I did not remove my baseboards.  The bottom of the bead board sat right on top of my baseboards and I just piped in a line of caulk for a smooth transition.

The last step in the process (before decorating–yeah!) was to give all the beadboard and trim two coats of Ultra Pure White in semi-gloss finish.  Bead board is a little tricky to paint, but I found that a 3″ wide brush worked best with a 1-1/2″ angled brush for corners.

I spray painted the big heavy mirror black and then realized that hanging it would be tricky with the finger joint board projecting out from the wall.  I solved that problem by using a couple of wood scraps and drywall anchors to allow me to hang the mirror away from the wall.  Here’s the picture from the side of the mirror–maybe it will make more sense than my description.

And here’s the now-black mirror, from the front:

I did take down the old 3-bulb light fixture and replaced it with a chrome fixture to keep things consistent.  Since I bought the new one off Craigslist and sold the old one on Craigslist (both for $30), I was pretty pleased with myself.

As is true with all of my DIY projects, it took longer than I thought it would, but I’m so glad I did it!  The last step is going to be to do something on the top half of the wall, but I’m not sure yet if I want to wallpaper (black and white toile, anyone?) or maybe paint a black and white awning stripe or harlequin diamond pattern.  Let me know if you have any input!

Here are a few “after” shots, always my favorite part!

I bought the step stool at a garage sale years ago for $1 and decoupaged toile paper onto the top and trimmed it with ribbon.

The brown telephone stand is also from a yard sale (recurring theme?) and holds my back issues of Romantic Homes magazine and a variety of powder room essentials.

Why not use a hotel ware ice bucket to store that extra roll of tp?!

I hope you like how it turned out.  Now, stay tuned for Part 2!

Thanks for stopping by.

Get Organized~~Simple Decoupaged Bulletin Board!

I’ve been saving this project for awhile and it seems perfect for summer.  In some ways, summer is even busier than the school year for us, because we have no set schedule and it seems like we spend a lot of time away from home on various vacations and trips to visit family (not that I’m complaining!).  Still, a fast and easy project always helps me to feel like I’m getting things accomplished, even when I don’t have time to spend days on it.

When I decorated my master bedroom sitting area/office (read about that HERE), I went with a mostly black and white color scheme, which I’ll admit is my usual go-to palette for decorating.  I already had a black-framed bulletin board that was in our bonus room, but not getting much use, so I decided to give it a facelift using decoupage paste and black and white damask wrapping paper.  Here’s what I started out with:

I bought my bulletin board at Hobby Lobby when it was 50% off and I’m sure it was under $20.  You can pick up the cheaper bulletin boards for WAY less and all you’d need to do it spray paint the frame the color you want.  There’s one in my daughter’s room that we bought for $1 at a yard sale and then sprayed celery green from top to bottom.

The wrapping paper was also from Hobby Lobby (I spend a lot of money there!) and it’s nice quality–thick and shiny, which I think is important when you’re going to be getting it wet with Mod Podge glue.  If you’ve never decoupaged before, then this is an easy project to get started on.  Seriously, just follow the instructions on the bottle!  And while there are probably other decoupage pastes on the market, Mod Podge is synonymous with decoupage (like “Kleenex” is with tissues!) so I use them interchangeably.

I used a foam brush to apply paste to the board, then carefully smoothed on the wrapping paper (cut to size, of course).  I then applied a top layer of Mod Podge and smoothed out the wrinkles.  The paper will look hazy, but that’s normal until the glue dries.  If you’re neater than me, then try to keep the glue off of the bulletin board molding.  Otherwise, wipe it off with a wet paper towel. :)

When the paper had dried nicely onto the bulletin board, I used this black braided trim around the inner edge to disguise some of my less-than-perfect straight edges.  I simply glue-gunned it into place, and I think it makes it look more finished.  A contrasting color (white, hot pink, green, etc) would also have looked nice.

Here’s the finished product, once again:

And here’s the bulletin board, in use.  Notice that most of the surface is covered with “stuff” already–kind of ironic, huh? :)

Summer Girls Night Out

A few weeks ago I hosted a Kick-Off Summer Girl’s Night Out Party. I wanted to get my new neighbors and friends together before summer got in full swing. It was a great night, and even more fun because Terry came down to help me pull it off and put her signature stylish touch on everything.

We started the night with drinks on the porch. I am so happy to say the weather cooperated and I finally got to host an event on my porch!

To start with, we offered the girls Peach Sangria served from a makeshift Bar on the porch. I will be back with the recipe soon as it was a HUGE hit! Everyone seemed to enjoy being outside as the sun set, and I thought one of the particularly fun parts was watching the guests who came from across the lake roll up to the party on their Beach Cruiser bikes. It’s the perfect form of transportation here at the beach!

Inside we had all the food, mostly some dips and my favorite cupcakes. I had my friend Janet, who sells Thirty-one bags have the bags on display, after all everyone can use a new summer bag, right?

{The goodie bags were from HERE }.

The menu was light, some of my favorite easy appetizers and some desserts, including Trader Joe’s macaroons and the delicious cupcakes from HERE.

It was a fun night and great to spend time with new friends and neighbors before we all set off the whirlwind of vacations, camps and activities summer brings.

Thanks for stopping by~
