The Kitchen Photoshoot is in the Can!

Woohoo!  It’s done–except for waiting for the issue to come out.  The team from Better Homes & Gardens Real-Life Kitchens & Baths Magazine (say that five times, fast!) descended on Nashville last week and, after shooting some fabulous, high-end spaces, they came to my humble abode.  So what did I do?  Headed to Disney World, of course, with my family!

Real-Life Kitchens & Baths features kitchen redos done on a budget

Seriously.  I wasn’t here for what will probably be the one-and-only photo shoot of my entire lifetime.  Because as luck would have it, they decided to come to town during the ONLY week in the first half of 2012 when we had plans…plans we’d made last November, and paid for last December.  The hubby will be gone for work all summer, and next summer we’ll be moving again, which always means no vacation, so we didn’t have many options but just to go to Florida!

I called in reinforcements–two of my bestest friends, Carolyn and Andrea–and asked them if they could “be me” for the day.  Here they are:

Carolyn, Andrea, and me, at one of our military formals

We’re not normally dressed like aging prom queens…here’s a real-life snap:

Carolyn, me, and Andrea

Yes, we’re in a ladies’ rest room in the above picture.  Where do you hang out with your girlfriends?!

So, these two dear friends drove to my house early in the morning to meet Bonnie Broten, the editor who “discovered” my shoestring-redo of a kitchen here at 11 Magnolia Lane (read the redo posts HERE and HERE, or check out our truly magazine-worthy old kitchen HERE).  She was accompanied by the photographer and the photographer’s assistant.  I had left them a sparkling clean kitchen and cleared the counters of everything that made it look like people actually USED the kitchen!

Prior to the shoot, I sent Bonnie lots of pictures of “props,” also known as “stuff I have collecting dust in my cupboards.”

She and the editors had decided on pink as the accent color to make my beige and white kitchen “pop.”

I left all the props on the dining room table, and left the crew and my girls some snacks and a fridge stocked full of water and soda.  Then I snuck out of town!

While the pantry wasn’t included in the shoot, I still feel like a new woman after tackling that dreadful space and making it awesome!

I can’t show any of their photos, of course, because that would spoil the surprise, but the girls did shoot a few behind the scenes snaps for me.

Carolyn and Andrea report that much of the work of a photo shoot involves lighting the shot, checking it again and again on the computer and having it approved via internet before snapping the final pic.  They texted me to get the password for our wireless network, but other than that, I didn’t hear a peep.

I love how the area that’s being photographed is *perfect* and there’s a perfect mess everywhere else!  That’s exactly what I do when I’m taking pictures!

Those gorgeous peonies were on their last legs when we made it home from Florida, but they sure were pretty in the shoot!

The pink cushions were just for the shoot…this is what I usually have on my chairs:

There were a few minor hitches, of course.  The valance over the kitchen sink took about an hour to get draped and folded just the way they wanted, and the seagrass pendant shade over my kitchen table was hanging just a little crooked.  Andrea weighed one side with a metal clamp from my husband’s workbench and all was well…

Not everybody was happy with the fact that our kitchen was going to be in Better Homes & Gardens.  The cat was most definitely pissed (there’s really no other word for it).  He wanted to sleep under my bed and access was DENIED all day long!

Angry Kitty!

In the end, the girls and I decided that it was probably God’s plan that I be out of town for the shoot because they’re not sure I would have handled it well (as if!).  I promised them that when their kitchens are photographed for BH&G, I will help out while they go to Florida to relax!

They’re not sure exactly which issue we’ll be in, but chances are that it will be Spring of 2013.  That timeline is typical–you always hear about magazines shooting Christmas spreads in May and June–but of course it’s hard to wait.

I can’t thank Bonnie and her team enough (and of course Carolyn and Andrea, too!) for all their efforts.

Thanks for stopping by!

Summer Strawberry Lemon Vojito

Welcome to summer!!!

Not to long ago, I had a similar drink to this in a local chain restaurant.

It was good.

Very good.

I love mojitos. I rarely make them as I prefer to only have them when Christy’s husband makes them, as they are the best! {And that recipe is HERE}

It’s strawberry season here where I live, so the timing was perfect to try to make my own version of this drink. With my husband’s help, we managed to come up with what has definitely become my new favorite ‘summer’ drink.

You can modify this however you like, it’s the perfect drink on a hot day as it’s served over ice, and the bubbles from the club soda make it kind of fun.

I used raspberry vodka only because I had it on hand, we mostly use regular vodka and just flavor it accordingly, but in this case the flavor difference between raspberry and strawberry wasn’t a big deal. We also sometimes use lemon-flavored vodka because it brings more “lemon” into the drink–but whatever you have is fine.

Traditional mojitos are made with rum, not vodka, which explains the “Vo” instead of the “Mo” in “Mojito” (in case it wasn’t obvious?)

Like in Chris’s mojitos, you first need to muddle the strawberries with the fresh mint.

I use a gadget from Pampered Chef –I think it was for making mini-tarts? I use it for mojitos :) — I don’t have a muddler, but you could use anything that crushes the mint with the fruit together and infuses their flavors.

We then add the fruit and mint to a glass with ice. From there you add the liquid, since my husband bartended his way through college, his measurements are more by intuition, but I am going to approximate. Feel free to tweak it to your liking.

Add 1 to 2 oz simple syrup (made with equal parts sugar and boiling water, then cooled), then 1 to 2 oz vodka, 2 oz lemonade, and finish with club soda. The peach schnapps will give the drink more sweetness but also more alcohol–so that’s an optional addition. You can add more or less lemonade depending on your strength preference.

Stir it up well and enjoy!

Hope you are having a spectacular Memorial Day weekend!

We at 11 Magnolia Lane offer our deepest gratitude to all who have, or are currently, serving this great country.

Enjoy!

Spinach, Sun Dried Tomato and Feta Stuffed Portabella Mushrooms

Spinach, Sun Dried Tomato and Feta Stuffed Portabella Mushrooms

Spinach, Sun Dried Tomato, and Feta Stuffed Portabella Mushroom

I made these wonderful stuffed Portabella mushrooms caps the other evening for dinner and I just had to share the recipe.  I found an image for stuffed Portabella mushrooms on Pinterest and fell instantly in love, so I of course pinned it.  When I went back to review the recipe, it didn’t link up to anything so these delicious fungi caps are from scratch!  Not to toot my own horn but turned out pretty darn tasty.   Honestly, how could I go wrong with spinach, sun dried tomatoes and feta cheese- anything with those three ingredients usually turns out wonderfully.

I hope you enjoy these tasty stuffed Portabella’s as much as I did.

INGREDIENTS

Stuffed Portabella Mushroom Cap Ingrediants

  • 4-6 large Portabella mushroom caps
  • 1 medium red onion
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 jar sun dried tomatoes (diced)
  • 1 bag fresh spinach chopped
  • 1 cup Parmesan cheese
  • 1 container feta cheese
  • fresh Italian parsley
  • fresh thyme
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 cup white or brown rice (couscous, orzo or quinoa could also work)
  • Panko bread crumbs (optional)
  • 1 can black olives or kalamata (optional)
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 Tsp olive oil/coconut oil or bacon grease

DIRECTIONS

Saute Onion and Garlic

  1. Saute onion and garlic until translucent
  2. Add in spinach, cook down
  3. Add in sun dried tomatoes, olives and S&P
  4. Remove from heat and toss in cooked rice or starch of your choice. This is optional so you don’t have to add this in if you are following a low carbohydrate meal plan.
  5. Beat the egg and set aside.
  6. Once the rice mixture is room temp, mix in cheeses and the egg.  Mix everything together and fill each mushroom cap- form a dome shape so there is a lot of filling.  The egg should ensure that mixture stays together.
  7. Sprinkle with panko crumbs for a crispy topping.
  8. Bake at 375 for 15 minutes.

Decorating a Dream Nursery

Is there anything sweeter, or more sentimental then decorating a nursery for a new baby? In all my homes, my baby rooms will always be the most special to me. The 9 (long!) months you wait for the arrival baby are the perfect time to create a special place for the newest member of your family.

There are so many tools out there now that can help with this huge decision–colors, decor, theme, gender nuetral? (or pink or blue?) The inspiration is just endless. Oh to have had Pinterest back when I was planning a nursery…

Nursery Designed by Windsor Smith

This nursery, by Windsor Smith, is one of my all time favorites. It must have been designed for twins, and it’s perfection.

Restoration Hardware Baby & Child has taken sophisticated baby rooms to the next level, I often find items in this catalog that inspire decor in other rooms of my house. The luck of a baby to sleep in such an elegant space.

Do you remember this gorgeous nursery we featured last fall? What I love is how timeless this room is. It will be perfect for their daughter until she goes to college.

Terry and I both recently “oohed & ahhhed” over this sweet baby girl nursery created on the Style Network show The Amandas…

Nursery by The Amandas

As I decorated my three rooms, the thing I always struggled with was choosing a paint color. My husband swears its a “being pregnant” thing but the perfect paint color was ALWAYS wrong when it went on the wall…my first son’s nursery was more “periwinkle” then blue (very masculine, huh?) and my second son’s room was much more “apple green” then light green. We lived with it, but my perfectionistic self would have preferred the color to be closer to what I hoped for.

Glidden Paint has a GREAT solution–they are introducing a new line of Baby Room Colors from Glidden, as well as an interactive tool to help expecting parents chose just the right color.

In addition, they are giving away a $2500 gift card to one lucky set of parents to be. CLICK HERE for more information on this giveaway!

What is your dream nursery? Are you as sentimental about those rooms as I am?

Fearless! Guest Post by Cristina at Remodelando la Casa

Today we kick of our series of guest posts for our “Fearless” series that Christy wrote about HERE. As she said, we constantly hear from friends (and I know even I feel this way at times) that they are “afraid” to take on a home project because they don’t know how… or they might mess up… or that its just too overwhelming.

Well, probably the first guest that came to our minds for this series was Cristina from Remodelando la Casa.

Cristina

We are in awe of her fabulous home projects, and definitely think she embodies the “Fearless” DIY’er. She is here today sharing about her projects–and being a girl using power tools!

*****************************

Hi Magnolia Lane! Most of the time the mere words “power tools” makes us think of big, burlier guys doing heavy jobs with them– or at least of something that is mostly used by men.

I used to rely on my husband to do most of the repairs around the house, like changing light fixtures or repairing leaky faucets.  But when I asked him about building a simple shelf, installing crown molding or wall frames there was no answer and he didn’t do it!

I wasn’t raised watching power tools in action. I never used them until I noticed my home was looking outdated (like about three years ago),  it was then that I decided to take the task of home improvement into my own hands, beginning by giving those somewhat intimidating tools a try.

I began using his tools and to my amazement I began buying more myself.  With them, I finished many small projects around the house, and I loved the feeling of empowerment that it gave me! I didn’t have to wait! I didn’t need help! I could do it myself … and it was so much fun!

My biggest project so far has been my kitchen.

With the kitchen, I was afraid I was going to take a bigger bite than I could possibly chew.  That is where all those little projects I’ve done helped me realize that yes, it was something I could accomplish.

Like the first task in the kitchen: Building and attaching a shelf to the island, but with the proper tool it was quite easy.

I was ready to continue and  I was not afraid to go on building a fridge enclosure or my own range hood.

I had never installed a backsplash or set tiles before but again, with the right tools that job was not that hard to complete.

Now I know that I can do most of the things I want to if you give me the right power tools!

I have continued updating my home, taking my time to learn, trying to get a new tool with each project, because I treat them like investment pieces that get paid for through doing the job.  I also recently updated my Laundry room, where I had to put many of my tools at good use.

My latest “investment” has been buying a router, a tool I needed to complete a small bathroom makeover project. Here I am trying it out! As with any new tool, the excitement is enormous! Reading the instructions, being safe, and just putting it into action are the sure ways to go.

But the most important thing after safety I would say is …practice, practice, and more practice! Some power tools are surprisingly similar to things you use in the kitchen. That’s why I think any woman can handle them!

I am by far not an expert and I have a long road to keep on learning but in my opinion I like to leave you with the five most important power tools that every woman needs to do home improvements on her own.

  • Power Drill.   You use it to install curtain hardware, to change door knobs, and in general the possibilities are endless– you must have at least one!
  • Power Sander.  Us women like to finish furniture pieces and working with this power tool will shorten your work.
  • Compound Miter Saw.  If you have follow me, you know I love moldings. Having a miter saw is just part of working with molding.  It is also good for cutting narrow pieces of wood and very easy to handle.
  • Power Nailer.  Talking about moldings, have you try to install them without having a power nailer? Just with simple nails and a hammer?  I tried once and  I couldn’t complete that task. A power nailer makes that job super easy.
  • Power Stapler.  Again, we love decorating our homes and yes, we can see ourselves working on upholstery projects, right?  This is the tool for that!

You can begin building your own set of tools, and at the same time you’ll begin building the confidence that you can tackle any home improvement because you have the right tool.

Not so fearless,

Photobucket

**********************

OK, we think she is pretty fearless. Thank you so much Cristina for stopping by Magnolia Lane today–and for all your inspiration. Make sure to visit her at Remodelando la Casa and see more of her amazing projects.

Must-Have Recipe for Easy Summer Entertaining: Mojitos!

Not too long ago, I posted a tutorial on making your own wooden beverage tags a la Ballard Designs (read about that HERE).  The tag I chose to use while shooting the “after” photo was one of my favorites:  mojitos!  Since my husband has created the absolute best mojito recipe I’ve ever tasted, I figured I’d post it for you today.  It’s the perfect summer drink for entertaining, whether it’s grilling and playing cornhole in the backyard, spending a day on the boat or at the beach, or serving evening cocktails on the screened porch.

Mojitos are a bit labor-intensive compared to other drinks, because you have to start with fresh mint and real limes for the best results, so I’ve found, sadly, that when I order them in a restaurant or at a bar, I’m never quite sure of what I’m going to get.    My husband has started to question waitstaff and bartenders closely before he’ll commit to ordering one out!  But I can tell you that this recipe is a never-fail one.  Why not mix up a batch this weekend?

The below recipe is for a single glass (although why would you ever make just one?!) and after that I’ll give you the recipe for a pitcher.

Chris’s Mojitos by the Glass

1/2 lime, quartered                                            5-6 fresh mint leaves

Crushed ice                                                         2 oz white/light rum

1 oz simple syrup                                               2 drops bitters

3 oz club soda

1.  Begin by making the simple syrup:  combine 1 cup water and 1 cup white sugar in a saucepan, bring to a low boil, and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sugar dissolves.  Cool to room temperature and store in the refrigerator.  One batch will make up to 12 mojitos.  Side note:  for all of you Yankees reading, this is how Southerners make sweet tea–with simple syrup!  If you pour granulated sugar into iced tea, it just sinks to the bottom.  Simple syrup blends in perfectly.  Whenever I served iced tea, I place a small pitcher of simple syrup next to the tea so people can sweeten it to their own taste.  You can also infuse simple syrup with lemon peel, and my husband infuses it with mint leaves for his mint julep recipe, but that’s a post for another day!!

2.  Muddle the lime and mint in the bottom of a tall glass.  That means smoosh them together for awhile to release the juice from the lime and the oil from the mint leaves.  My hubby does this in the bottom of his Boston shaker, which he swears is the only way to shake a cocktail.  A muddler is a wood or metal pestle that’s long and thin enough to get into the bottom of a glass.  Before we bought one, we used the end of a wooden spoon, and obviously since it was so narrow, it was a tougher job.  Here’s a close-up of our muddler:

The fresh mint and fresh limes are essential.  If you’re not going to do that, just buy a premade mix!  I’ve started growing mint in a huge pot out back every summer; it’s hardy and usually comes back every spring.

3.  Add rum, simple syrup, and bitters (you can buy a bottle of bitters at the liquor store; it’s right there with the other mixers.  We use Angostura bitters from Trinidad & Tobago.  I wouldn’t skip the bitters, either, as they really bring out the flavor).  Fill the glass to the top with crushed ice and top with club soda.

4.  Shake for a 5-6 seconds to mix thoroughly.  Garnish with a lime wedge and mint sprig.  Enjoy!

Chris’s Mojitos by the Pitcher

3 limes, quartered                                         36 mint leaves

12 oz rum                                                        6 oz simple syrup

12 drops bitters                                              about 18 oz club soda

These ingredient amounts make a six-serving pitcher, so we’ll often double or even triple it for large gatherings.  We stir the club soda in rather than shaking each serving separately, but be sure to mix it well!

The only pre-made mojito mix that I will drink is made by Stirrings, but I will still add fresh mint and limes if I have them.

Yum–thank you, Cuba, for inventing the mojito!  Enjoy your mojitos, and thanks for stopping by!

In the Kitchen with 11 Magnolia Lane: Sesame Grilled Pork Chops with Green Apple Slaw

Click on the “In the Kitchen with 11 Magnolia Lane” Button to read about our new series

It has been four months since I have changed my eating habits (and began work on this meal plan series!) and I have noticed some serious changes.  The biggest change I’ve made in my diet is to give up bread, pasta, flour, crackers, pretzels and as much processed food as possible.   I still indulge here and there, but it usually leaves me feeling terrible.   That result really has helped me curb my cravings for sugar and processed foods.  Why eat something if the end result makes you feel terrible?  Now, don’t get me wrong– I still drink wine (and even the occasional cosmopolitan :)  ).   I will definitely enjoy  a homemade dessert once in a while without any hesitation.  I am just trying to ensure that I am aware of what I eat, when I eat it and why I am eating it (is it to benefit my health or did I have a bad day and feel I need chocolate?).

Among the physical changes I have experienced are weight loss and inches off my waist line.  That was never my personal goal but it sure is a nice bonus:). My goal was simply to feel  more energized.   I felt like I was walking around in a fog and I grew tired of that low energy feeling.  Managing the sugar (breads, pasta, rice…) has reduced my body from spiking insulin and therefore I am no longer crashing through out the day.  My energy is back which has allowed me to give more of time to my kids, my home, my nutrition, the gym and of course, this blog.

One of the best things I have learned from this journey is that no two bodies are alike so people really need individualized meal plans to feel great.  I am not advocating a low carbohydrate meal plan for everyone but this is how I cook and it works well for me and my family (and lots of my friends too).  The second thing I have learned is that you have to continually educate & advocate for yourself.  I just read an amazing article about eating high fat foods (good fats like avocado and nut oils) are essential to losing weight.  Isn’t that amazing.   You really should check out the article here as I found it fascinating.  We live in this low fat/chemical word and now science is proving that philosophy wrong.  You have to be your own advocate and I hope that some of the meals I provide inspire you to take action in your own the kitchen and your own personal health.

Here is another yummy recipe option to add to your own personal recipe book and here is the spring shopping week 2.

Sesame Grilled Pork Chops and Green Apple Slaw

Sesame Grilled Pork Chops with Green Apple Slaw

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4-6 pork chops (boneless or bone-in)
  • 1 bottle of your favorite sesame marinade
  • 1 cup mayo
  • 1/4 cup white vinegar
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 medium green cabbage, shredded
  • 1 medium sweet onion
  • 1 carrot
  • 2 tart green apples
  • Salt & pepper to taste

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Marinade pork chops 30 minutes prior to cooking.
  2. Grill pork chops for approx. 5-6 minutes the first side and 3-4 minutes on the opposite side.  Let stand 5 minutes after you remove them from the grill.
  3. For the slaw, shred the cabbage, onion and carrot into large bowl.   Thinly slice the apple, match-stick style.
  4. Combine the mayo. sugar, vinegar, salt and pepper in a mason jar and shake well until combined.
  5. Pour over the slaw and let sit for a few hours to ensure the flavors come together.
  6. Enjoy!

Spring on the Porch

Just popping in to share some pictures of my front porch updated for Spring…now almost summer!

We have been looking forward to warm weather to be able to use this space as living space. Our home sits on the edge of a sand quarry turned fresh-water lake, so we love our view. We have waited all winter long to be able to really enjoy it.

I ordered new cushions from HERE (Susan kindly did a giveaway with us last fall) and I spent the winter trying to decide which colors and patterns I should get. I love how the green and black look against our house, and the quality of the cushions is great.

We hung the ferns up recently and I am hopeful they will survive the winds here on the coast. So far, so good.

Now, I think its time to plan a party to enjoy this space!

New “Fearless” Series at 11 Magnolia Lane!

We’ve had such a great response from Terry’s healthy eating/meal planning In the Kitchen series (click on icon on the right sidebar for all the recipes), that we’ve decided to introduce a second series here at 11 Magnolia Lane.   We’re going to call it, simply, “Fearless,” and it will showcase the absolutely-not-afraid projects of a variety of guest bloggers.

One of my VERY fearless moments–taking a paintbrush to two dozen cherry cabinets!

Over time, one of the things that readers have mentioned to us repeatedly is that while they want to improve their home through do-it-yourself projects and decorating, they often get stuck because they’re scared.  They’re afraid that they’ll hurt their home’s resale value, that they won’t be able to finish what they started, or that it won’t turn out like they envisioned it.  I think we’ve all been there!  Any DIY’er will tell you that in addition to her amazing, blog-worthy successes, there have been any number of epic fails.  I still remember the time I spilled an entire gallon of bright-red paint all over the pristine white ceramic tile and grout in my powder room (this was years ago), or the time that I punched a hole in the drywall while attempting to pry off molding (only months ago).  It even happens to the professionals, though.

I think the best advice I can give you is just to give it a try!  Start with a smaller project, like painting a room.  Worst case scenario, you hate the color and have to repaint it.  I do that on a regular basis–paint is CHEAP!  If you don’t know how to do something, call in an expert, watch how he or she does it, and then do it yourself the next time.  That’s how I learned to rewire lighting fixtures and hang chandeliers.  I wasn’t sure how painting my tile backsplash in my kitchen would work out–I couldn’t find a lot of information on whether the paint would stick or how it would hold up over time–but I realized that the backsplash had to go, either way, so I just decided to give it a try.  Six months later, it’s holding up beautifully, and I’m so glad that I saved all that time, money, and effort that it would have taken to tear down the brown and put up white, just by pulling out my paintbrush and being fearless.

Before–brown tile backsplash
After–pristine white and perfect!

Go ahead, add a built-in!  You CAN do it yourself, and what potential buyer will come to your house and say, “Oh, no, I can’t stand having all this extra storage!”?

Make an Ikea bookcase look like custom, built-in storage shelves? Why not?!

So what if you put a pry bar through your drywall while you’re putting board and batten in your upstairs bathroom?  :)   You’ll learn to patch drywall (it’s not hard) and the end result will still be pretty, functional, and a definite improvement on where you started!  Oh, and you’ll still have paid about a quarter of what a pro would charge you to do the same thing.

This result was well worth a little suffering along the way!

We’re looking forward to showcasing the amazing efforts of some of the most fearless DIY’ers that blog-land has to offer, and hopefully they’ll inspire you that “you’ll never know until you try!”

{Do you have a project that you overcame your fear and tackled? Do you know of one that we should feature? Email us at 11Magnolialane@gmail.com and tell us about it and we may feature it!}

Thanks for stopping by!
