Easy, Sanity-Saving Craft Idea: We Can/Can’t Play Door Hanger

{Enter our current giveaway for a printable party package HERE}

A few weeks ago, I went on a personal mission to find a cute door sign that would easily telegraph to the neighborhood kiddos whether my two were available (or not) to play.  Some days it’s just easier to hang up the sign than to answer the door multiple times, right?

Remembering that I used to have a darling door sign when my kids were little that warned visitors away from ringing the doorbell while Baby was sleeping, I told Amy what I was looking for in regards to play time and asked her if we could put our heads together and create a cute sign.  But, as sometimes happens, before we could get to work, I found the perfect sign at Positively Splendid and figured, why reinvent the wheel when I can just follow a tutorial?  I loved what Amy (Positively Splendid’s Amy, not our Amy :)   ) had done with the idea, as well as the colors she chose.  Please head on over by clicking {here} and let her know that I sent you!  Here’s what she came up with:

How cute is that?  Don’t you just love the Tiffany blue paint combined with the black and white striped ribbon?  Can you see why I chucked the idea of coming up with my own concept and just followed her easy tutorial?  I got to work right away because I had everything I needed in the house already to make this project.  Here’s what I did:

1.  I painted wooden plaques I had from the craft store (they were 80 cents apiece).  I used regular acrylic paint and did two in robin’s egg blue and one in light green.  I’m going to do hot pink next time!

2.  I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out chalkboard contact paper for the sign.  I used chalkboard contact paper because I had scraps of it left from my North Carolina pantry makeover.  Silhouette makes chalkboard vinyl, which I’ll be buying and using from here on out, but the contact paper worked perfectly.  I just used the cutting mat because I had only a few small scraps left.  If you don’t have a Silhouette or other craft cutter, why not use chalkboard paint (spray or brush-on) to paint your sign?  You can use tape to tape off the edges and do those in a bright color; or, chalkboard paint now comes in some gorgeous shades!

3.  I screwed a small ring hanger on the back of each plaque (eye screws would work, too, but I just used what I had) to hold the ribbon.

4.  Using the Silhouette again, I cut out the words “We” and “Play” from white vinyl.  I used the free font “Boyz R Gross” and I love how playful it looks.  I like Amy’s idea of using a white chalkboard marker (or chalk) to write “Can” or “Can’t” in the middle, but you could certainly write the entire message out with chalk, and that way you could use the sign for other things (like “We’re Around Back” or “Shh…Baby Sleeping!”).

5.  I cut a length of 2″ ribbon and fashioned a loop and bow.  I have a ribbon addiction so I had lots to choose from, but I just loved Amy’s black, white, and blue color combination so I made mine out of those shades.  The green one I gave to a friend as a little birthday gift, and I gave another one to my neighbor (so my kids know when to stay away from her house, too!).  So cute and easy–and inexpensive!  Amy, thanks for the great idea–we all need one of these before summer!

Thanks for stopping by!

House Tour–Tracey’s Gorgeous New Kitchen

We are lucky enough to have some very talented friends, and we thought this kitchen makeover was too good not to share.

This is our friend Tracey. She has been mentioned many times on our Blog, just not by name. For some reason, I always say things like “I was talking to a friend” or “My friend said” because we talk a lot about decorating and she has great taste, so here she is in real life:

She has great style–fun, colorful, fresh and she’s made her house amazing on a budget. In fact, we came to photograph her kitchen but wound up taking pictures of several rooms, so we’ll be back with her Dining Room, Living Room and Office in a Part 2 post.

Here is the “Before” of her kitchen. This renovation is close to my heart because she had the same cabinets I had in my former home and wanted desperately to paint.  Tracey and her handy husband recently tackled remaking their standard kitchen into something really fun and beautiful.

And (drumroll….) is the AFTER!

They painted their maple cabinets, added new granite counters, hardware and lighting–including converting recessed cans to pendants and added under cabinet lighting.

Here are some pretty pictures~

She has such appealing accessories and vignettes.

We loved that Dash, the dog, has his own treat “Bar”

You can also see the under cabinet lighting a bit in this picture.

Here is the great in-process shot of the lighting going in. Since I have known them, Tracey’s husband has completely finished their basement, redone bathrooms and built their deck (a full story off the ground).  He is very, very “handy”, as you can tell.

While they intended to do the painting of the cabinets themselves, and even followed Christy’s Tutorial on painting cabinets HERE. They had some issues with paint on the doors, and wound up having the doors sprayed professionally–a great timesaver, and they look great.

I really want a cute Pantry sign like this now too.

Thanks Tracey, for letting us share your makeover! Did you like it? We’ll be back with more of her cute house, so stay tuned either by Facebook or Linky or Email Subscription.

My Son’s 7th Birthday Camping Party & Giveaway

My oldest son turned seven last week.  I ache all over just typing the number– seven.  How did he get so big so fast?  He also has his first loose tooth, well actually teeth, as if turning seven wasn’t enough!

My son is totally into Star Wars, what seven-year old boy isn’t these days? Since we had a Star Wars party last year, we wanted to head in a different direction for this year.  We thought a camping party would be fun as we just built a rustic fire pit in our backyard.  We came up with a party plan that he loved and one that I felt I could still be creative in designing so here it is…. s’mores, roasted hot dogs, tents and a movie under the stars… What more could you ask for?  Also, can you guess what movie we watched?  Yup, Star Wars!!!

Camping Party Invite with Roasting Marshmallow

Here is the invitation…. don’t you just LOVE it!?!  I added the stick, marshmallow and ribbon to the top to make it a bit more “me.”   I cannot take full credit for the design as I ordered a party pack of printables from Simone Made It off her Etsy Store.  She is an amazing graphic designer, all her printables are super cute and so reasonably priced.    You just pick your design and she will send you a PDF file with a ton of printables to make your party special.  All you have to do is edit the wording to fit your needs and print them out.  Her Camping Party Package came with two invitation styles, thank you notes, cupcake toppers, water bottle wrappers, chocolate bar wrappers and so much more.

Also, Simone Made It has generously offered to give away TWO Party Printable Packages of your choice to TWO lucky 11 Magnolia Lane winners.   If you have a party on the horizon, you don’t want to miss out on this giveaway! Just leave us a comment on the bottom of this post telling us what party you could use the package for. For a 2nd Entry, become a follower by Linky tools and leave us a comment telling us so. And a 3rd entry, “like” 11 Magnolia Lane on Facebook and come back and tell us so. {This giveaway will run through May 3rd at 8pm EST}   {Edit: this giveaway is now closed, thanks to all who entered}

As most of our readers know, I am an event planner by trade, so planning a kids’ party can spiral a bit out of control, especially if it is for my own child :) .   Unfortunately, the only thing I don’t have control over is the weather and the rain gods were not on my side this past Saturday.  Needless to say, we didn’t roast s’mores over our rustic fire pit, we didn’t camp outdoors, and we didn’t watch a movie under the stars.  I didn’t get the photoshoot I wanted for the blog and to be honest, I don’t feel that I took enough quality pictures.  The party just didn’t go as planned and honestly, let’s face it… that happens.    I had to move everything indoors which wasn’t my vision but I assure you, the kids did not care one bit.  I am grateful I had the help of my husband and his parents to get me through the day and in the end, what really makes it the “perfect” party?  Is it the props?  The food? The 48 homemade cupcakes?  What really makes the perfect party?  I am still working on that answer and hopefully will have it figured out by the end of this post.  While we wait, here are some photo’s from my not so perfect “outdoor” party:)

Dessert Buffet Table

Dessert Buffet Table

Since we couldn’t roast s’mores I decided to make some s’more pops.  I simply froze the marshmallows and then dipped them in dark chocolate and some graham cracker crumbs.  They were a huge hit and they were really easy to make.  I printed out “Go take a Hike” from one of Simone Made It printables and tied it all together with some brown twine.

“Go Take a Hike” Marshmallow Pops

The cupcakes were a big job, I ended up having to make 48 as we had a lot of adults join in the fun.  I decided to make two styles, both made from scratch from this recipe I found from Food.com. They were decadent and so worth the time.  With the help of my mother-in-law, we frosted two different style cupcakes.  One was a chocolate s’more cupcakes adorned with mini marshmallows and the other was a very cute campfire cupcake with pretzel sticks and red and yellow flames.

To tie it all together and to bring the outdoors in, I asked my hubby and my father-in-law to cut some logs so that we could create rustic wood cake stands.  Aren’t they adorable?

Cupcakes with Simone Made It cupcake toppers and rustic log cake stands

Here is another party favor I created by mixing Golden Grahams cereal, mini marshmallows and chocolate chips… I called it “Trail Mix” but my kids actually ate it like cereal the next day.  I cannot say that was a healthy breakfast but they sure enjoyed it:)

“Take Home S’more Fun”: S’more inspired trail mix party favor

Lastly, my favorite prop for my son’s party was created by my father-in-law, aka, Papa Tom.  He is a woodworker and makes the most amazing furniture, bookshelves, kids’ race tracks and photo frames  a girl could ask for.  I have lots of Papa Tom creations to share with you over the next few weeks but now I have to get back to the party.  I found some adorable tents online and asked if he could design something for me.  I really wanted it to be simple, yet effective so the kids could sit under the tents while watching the movie outside.  Needless to say, he went above and beyond my expectations and this is what we ended up with… THREE amazing tents for the kids to enjoy and “camp” under.  Here is one that I placed near the dessert table.

Custom made tent by Papa Tom

I have to say it was an amazing  party even if the rain kept us indoors for most of the event.  I had 20+ kids in my basement playing flash light tag, screaming their heads off, wrestling like super heroes and simply having a blast.   I guess that is the answer to my “perfect” party question.

It doesn’t have to be perfect, it can rain cats and dogs, you can buy your cupcakes from a store because in the end, that is not what they remember.    My son will remember playing flash light tag with his best friends David and Drew.  He will remember having his favorite girl, Hannah Banana, sleep over and eat extra special chocolate chip and marshmallow “trail mix” cereal for breakfast the next day.   He will remember that he had so much fun,and most importantly he will remember feeling special.   In the end, that is what made his 7th birthday “perfect”!! He had fun, he was happy, he was silly, smiled wide showing all his little loose baby teeth, and he laughed the entire time.  Rain or shine, indoors or out,  he was happy and that is what made his not so perfect party “perfect” for me.

Free Inspirational Printables for Runners

Remember when I posted my master bedroom with the office sitting area a few weeks ago? You can see the entire room remake {Here} . Well, I showed this picture of my treadmill and my “running corner,” where I have a hook that holds my race medals and a couple of inspirational Bible verses about running.

Amy promised to make a printable of these two Bible verses (Hebrews 12:1-2, and 1 Corinthians 9:24), and here they are (and they’re way cuter than the ones I made!!):

Click below to download and print the pdf file:

running printable 11 Magnolia Lane

Or, just download the jpg images above and below.  The one above will print two 5x7s, or if you trim off the blue striping, they’ll be 4×6′s and you can trim them and place them on whatever background you like.

I’ll be running the Rock and Roll Half Marathon in Nashville this weekend–for the fourth time because I’m a glutton for punishment–so I’ll have these verses running (pun intended!) through my head for sure!

Keep your eyes on the prize, and thanks for stopping by!

BIG BIG News {!}, Plus My Pantry Redo Reveal

***The BIG, BIG news first, because I can’t stand not to tell you right away–my kitchen redo is going to be featured in a Better Homes & Gardens magazine!  Their Real-Life Kitchens & Baths magazine comes out seasonally, and one of their editors contacted me about including my kitchen in an upcoming issue!  After I got up off the floor, I agreed immediately because, let’s face it, this sort of thing doesn’t happen every day.  I will, of course, be the example of the “shoestring” budget renovation, but as more of us have small budgets than large ones, that’s just fine with me.  We should be doing the photoshoot next month, and of course I’ll keep you updated every step of the way!***

While it’s going to be impossible to top that, I’m so happy to tell y’all that I’ve checked off another BIG item on my 2012 to-do list for the house–the pantry.  It has been an eyesore since we moved in last June, and when I redid the kitchen (those posts are here and here) I was so DONE with that room that I skipped the pantry.  It’s a great size, though, and I knew it had so much potential.

I made a few quick and easy changes to our cabinet-sized pantry in our North Carolina house, and loved how that turned out.  Regardless of the space you have available for your pantry, it’s easy to make the best of what you have.  In our NC house, that meant chalkboard contact paper, polka dot ribbon, and lots of mason jars (easy! cheap!) to jazz things up a bit.

Our Nashville house has a big, corner pantry (because that was at the top of my wish list!), but sported white wire shelving (which I hate, hate, hate!!).  Here is the embarrassing “before” picture:

Pretty scary, huh?  I hated how my cans always fell over sideways, plus my shelves were just a little too short to hold my small appliances (bread machine, blender, etc) on any shelves but the top one.  My kids like to make smoothies, and they couldn’t get the blender down easily on their own.  Small things, but they annoyed me.

My husband was out of town Palm Sunday weekend, and so late Friday night I decided to just go for it.  I took everything out of the pantry and ripped out the white wire shelves, taking a picture of the empty shelves first so I could sell them on Craigslist.  They’re already gone; I sold the whole lot for $30 and considered it good riddance!

My recommendation if you’re doing a pantry renovation is that you use a bunch of cardboard boxes or plastic storage bins and put your pantry items in there in an orderly way.  Even if it takes only a few days, you’ll still want to be able to find your cereal, peanut butter, and other essentials without searching through everything.  It also keeps you sane, as you don’t have to cover every single kitchen counter with pantry stuff!  I stacked my boxes in the dining room, which is used more as my workshop than as a dining room these days.

The next step was to patch the holes in the drywall–there were so many holes that I really despaired at this point, but spackle can work miracles.  I then gave the pantry a coat of paint that matches the kitchen (Benjamin Moore’s Alexandria Beige), as it was still the contractor color that it was painted originally.  That gave me a clean slate to work with!

After measuring several times, I headed to Home Depot.  I wanted to use solid shelving, and I wanted it to be white, but I didn’t care too much about whether I used melamine or wood.  Once I looked at my options and realized that with wood I would have to prime, sand, paint, sand, and paint again, I decided that melamine would be just fine, thanks!  I had the nice guys at Home Depot cut my melamine so that I could build five shelves high, and I bought 1″x 2″ x 8′ primed pine fingerjoint board to use to build the supports under the shelves.  I also bought five brackets so that the “floating” shelf would have a support in the corner–pantry items can be heavy!

As I tried out the shelves, I ran into my first problem–while I had measured several times, the front of my shelves needed to be wider than the back of my shelves.  Why?  Because my pantry isn’t square (!) to the tune of 3/4″.  That’s WAY off!  I will admit to thinking a few bad words as I loaded all ten pieces of melamine back in the car, and the kids and I headed back to Home Depot after church to have the pieces re-cut.  The guys only said, “Measure twice, cut once,” about a thousand times, and how silly of me to expect that a room would be square!

Look how far off the edge is from the front of the shelf to the back–crazy!

It took me about three days to build all five levels of shelves, but only because it was a busy week, with a couple of functions for hubby’s work in the evenings, plus kid activities and homeschooling during the day.  It was so exciting as I made progress, though!

I won’t lie–getting the shelves level at the corners where the two pieces met up was a bit tricky.  A laser level would probably have made my life easier, but I made it work with just a regular level.  I used a combination of 2″ and 2-1/2″ #10 screws to secure the supports to the walls, and where I couldn’t screw directly into the studs, I used Pop-Toggles as my drywall anchors because the nice hardware guy said they’re his favorite and they hold up to 60 lbs.

I spaced the shelves 15″ apart, which is a little taller than the norm, but I wanted everything to fit and there’s always so much wasted space in the top of closets and pantries.

When I had all the shelves built, I realized that I needed to come up with something to hide the fact that the pantry wasn’t square and the shelves were all wonky.  After using my brad nailer to secure the shelves to the supports for all eternity, I cut screen trim with my miter saw and used Liquid Nails to glue it to the ends and fronts of the shelves.  Take a look at the before and after–the finishing details really make a big difference!

Before:

And after:

I also dabbed a little white paint on the screw heads in the supports and the brackets to camouflage them, although I will admit that I didn’t paint over the primed wood of the supports.  They really didn’t need it.

When all the shelves were in place and level, it was time for the fun–moving back in!  One idea that I love for a corner pantry, and have had pinned for a long time, is Decor Chick’s corner carousels {read her great redo HERE}.  What a great way to utilize the space in the back corner that’s usually wasted!  While her father made her beautiful wooden lazy susans, I went to the store and bought five 18″ turntables (using my 20% off coupons, of course!).  My shelves are 16″ deep, so that diameter worked perfectly.  Here we are with the turntables in place:

Now I’m just going to show you a ton of “after” pictures without much text.  I know the pantry looks styled and it won’t stay this neat forever, but the solid shelves and the turntables created SO much additional space for me that I really do have room to leave the serving pieces and cookbooks in here for the long haul.  I love it!

The stoneware crock on the floor was my grandmother’s and it holds my onions and potatoes.  An old freezer basket holds my cracker boxes and large chip bags.  And the blender’s low enough for the kids to reach now!

The chip rack was an Ebay purchase; I have two of them in different sizes.

The Jessie Steele apron was a birthday gift from my friend, Andrea.   I love the colors!

I also got the idea of hanging a wreath in the pantry from Decor Chick.  Why not decorate this often-used room?  I also added a plain black “B” from Hobby Lobby on the other wall.

About a week after I finished the rest of the redo, the chandelier I had ordered arrived.  Our friends were visiting from Virginia Beach, so I pulled the box out one morning and put them to work–Robyn put the crystals on with me, and Steve hung it (that was a nice break!).  I chose the same little white chandy that’s in my laundry room, as they’re just a few steps from each other and I thought it would provide continuity.  It’s impossible to get a decent shot without it being on, but here it is:

Why not hang a chandelier in a pantry? :)   I left the white wire shelves on the inside of the door, although I am debating whether to build a wooden spice rack to take its place on the door, or to replace the door itself with either a screen door or a frosted glass paneled door. Does anyone have an opinion?

I can’t tell you how good this redo made me feel, and even though the shelves were a huge pain because the room wasn’t square, it was still well worth it.  With the chandelier, lazy susans, and the shelving materials, I spent about $260.  I consider it money well spent, because now I like opening the pantry door!

Here’s one more “before:”

And one more “after:”

Aaahh…much better!

Thanks for stopping by!

My Spring Menu has “hatched” and I am so excited to share this healthy but satisfying menu that truly captures the essence of spring (at least I think so!).  This menu offers a ton of fresh veggies, light and fluffy fritattas, and energy-packed protein shakes that will get you through a busy morning.  Click here for to download our tasty spring monthly calendar as well as the spring shopping week 1

Spring Menu Reveal

Here are just a few of my favorites from the Spring Menu so far:

1. Fish Cakes with Remoulade Sauce

2. Red Bliss Potato Salad with Mojito Braised Pork

3. Soy Marinaded Skirt Steak with Asparagus and Sugar Snap Pea Stir Fry

4. Romaine and Carrot Slaw

Our “In the Kitchen Series” is designed to make your life easier, providing a healthy, easy to follow meal plan and shopping list. No more drive-throughs, frozen nuggets or unhealthy boxed macaroni and cheese!

I personally feel that spring is a time to refresh, renew and rejoice.  It is the perfect time to focus on your health and possibly a good time to begin spring cleaning–not your closets, I am talking about your diet and your body.

So many of us rely on carbohydrates, caffeine and sugar to make it through the day.  We poison our bodies with excess and wonder why we feel so tired.  Trust me, I know how hard it is to change bad eating habits.  I have been there and done that!  In fact, I have been there and done that so many times that I constantly need to remind and challenge myself to stay on a healthy life track.  There are so many ways to spring cleanse but I wanted to share a story recently shared with us from our good friend and guest blogger Kara Pfau, we thought it was an important message and we asked her if she would share it here too.

Kara is an expert when it comes to good healthy eating habits and she, like most of us, was sick of living in the fog of unhealthy eating and caffeine dependence.  She was searching for clarity, energy and of course wanted to feel and look great.  Here is what Kara has to share about cleansing our bodies:

Stock image

Kara…Why do we need to detox and cleanse our bodies?

It’s simple, we are a product of our environment and we are exposed to toxins in the air we breathe, the foods we eat and the products we use on our skin. You are a subtotal of those toxins and these toxins stay in our tissues and fat for long periods of time.  Unfortunately, these toxins we let into our bodies really don’t want to leave.  In fact, they love to live in our tissue and fat cells.  When this happens, it causes inflammation which can lead to more serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

Stock Image

Here is the good news, we can do something about this! By simply detoxing our systems daily you can reclaim your health.  First, I suggest you avoid hurtful toxins, take supplements that support your liver/ kidneys and of course, exercise!!

Last year I decided to do this 30 day challenge and it has changed my life. I did note that my intense cravings for sugar, carbohydrates, coffee and wine were a result of an imbalance of blood sugar in my body as well as an indication of a sensitivity to several of these allergenic foods. As a result of this program I began working out 4-5 times a week, picked up a new sport of tennis, lost my strong sugar cravings, had a much clearer mind ridding that foggy state I had been in from the overload of sugar and toxins, and had an enormous amount of energy to get through all the events of the day with 2 small children.

The program I followed was Arbonne’s 30 Days to Fit which is an overall body cleanse that encompasses eating whole fresh foods, eliminating allergenic foods, balancing your blood sugar, increasing nutrient intake, and supporting the body’s 4 elimination pathways (the liver, kidneys, intestines and your largest detoxifying organ, your skin).

Arbonne 30 Day Fit Program

Your liver regenerates every 45 days, your brain regenerates every 60 days, your bones regenerate every 90 days, and your skin every 30 days.

Balancing your blood sugar is crucial to your health and balancing your PH is essential as diseases grow in acidic environment. Every food is either alkaline forming or acidic forming and next post I will go into which foods to eliminate, how they impact your blood sugar and ph imbalance and how these foods might be causing you to hold on to pounds you wouldn’t mind parting with!

The 30 days of detoxing and cleansing helped me accomplish all 5 things above. The program includes eliminating inflammatory type foods an help your body automatically release toxins. Weight loss is a by-product of this cleanse. 80% of your immune system is in your gut as well as 80% of your serotonin so the main goal of this cleanse is to help you feel as good as you can, reclaim your teenage like energy, and have clarity and release those toxins that may have been building in your system for quite some time!

I invite you to take the plunge and challenge yourself to a 30-day spring cleanse!

In wellness and good health,

Kara

(If you want more information on how to begin a 30 day detox, you can email Kara directly at karapfau@yahoo.com)

Thanks so much for your insight Kara, we are so excited to have you on board as our health guru:).  I tried to keep all this useful information in mind while creating the spring menu.  My goal is to keep me, my family, and our readers healthy and well-balanced so we too can enjoy the “feel-good” life Kara describes above.  I will continue to featured recipes from the Spring Menu over the next couple of months so please stay tuned (either via Linky Tools, Facebook or email subscription) as you don’t want to miss a thing.

Thanks for stopping by and enjoy!

Things are “Looking Up” in my Dining Room

In our recent HOME TOUR post, I showed this picture of my dining room.

I just felt like the room needed some jazzing up so this weekend, despite the gorgeous sunny weekend weather we finally have here, so I decided I needed to paint the ceiling blue.

I think it adds a lot, don’t you?

We wanted to pull the blue from the lake outside but still keep the room clean and simple so as not to distract too much from the view.

And, I wanted to give this chandelier a little more impact.

While we are in the Dining Room, I will say that this china cabinet is probably my favorite piece of furniture. I have taken a paint brush and white paint to most of my dark wood furniture, but this I will never change. My Dad found it many years ago in a barn on his grandparents’ property and scraped dark green paint off it and made it gorgeous. I coveted it for years; my parents passed it down to my husband and me when we got married. I am even attached to the circa 1970′s brass hardware (yes, even the one that has been  missing since our move!).

As I have mentioned, we don’t use this room much for a traditional dining room, it’s really too small to hold more then a few people. But it’s the perfect spot for coffee.

And, it has one of the best views in the house.

The warm weather has brought out all sorts of visitors to our community,  just moments ago I glanced outside and saw a guy riding his bike on the bike path using a kite to propel him, while passing by in the water was a dad in a kayak pulling 2 little girls in a raft behind him.  Its never dull around here on a beautiful day…and so on that note, now I am going to head outside too!

Hope it’s a beautiful Sunday for you as well.

Home Office and Learning Center Progress

A few months ago, the ladies here at 11 Magnolia Lane shared our home goals for 2012.  One of my goals was to turn a portion of our basement into an office for me and an educational center for my children.    I am thrilled to say, our office has been designed and installed so now it is time to decorate.

I have to admit, decorating doesn’t always come easily to me, I often call Amy and Christy in for validation.  What would I do without them?

So here are some photos of the old office and as you can see, it was a blank canvas.

Basement prior to installation

Here is the new and improved basement office.  I am really excited to have my own desk and space, and just look at all the additional storage I have as well!

My children are just as excited and are begging me to buy them chairs so they can do their homework at their new desks.  I guess I has better get on it before they lose motivation to do their school work.  IKEA, here we come!!

As you can see, there is a lot of open shelving that I need to fill and keep organized.  I also have some corner bookshelves that are exposed so I will need to find baskets and/or bins to help maintain an orderly look.

I have been pulling some inspiration from the web and these are a few examples of what I like.

Of course I found an office with red accents… if you know me at all, you know I love RED!!!

Red and white office with open shelving from Decor Pad

Here is another great office from Houzz.  I love the cork board and the black and white organizational baskets.  Moving forward in 2012, I am committed to streamlining the decor in my home.  Now that we have ebony floors on our main level, I feel that black and white is the direction I am moving toward.   It is simply a timeless color combination and it allows you to add pops of color throughout your home.  The example below has blue accents, which I really liked.

Farinelli Construction Inc eclectic home office

Here is a chair that I have been pining over for months.  It is called the Zuo Modern Premiere Leather Office chair and costs well over $550.00.  That is way out of our budget, especially since I am looking for 3 chairs that match.

Here’s the chair…isn’t it beautiful!?

I cannot wait to decorate and share the final office reveal.  Amy and I are heading to Ikea this week where I plan to pick up tons of organizational supplies to help me design and organize my new basement work space.

Thanks for stopping by~

Monogrammed Burlap Tote Bag Giveaway Winner AND Sneak Peak at My Pantry Reveal

I hope everyone had a wonderful Easter.  We enjoyed an early worship service, followed by dinner and an egg hunt with dear friends.  My hubby even managed to see the end of the Masters in his recliner–a perfect day all around!

Amy and I appreciate all the nice compliments on our Home Tours, if you missed seeing both our homes, click HERE to see the post.

And, thanks to everyone who entered the drawing for this monogrammed burlap tote bag.

The winner is comment #29

(Thanks for the nice compliment too Sharon!)

Congratulations!  Please email us at 11Magnolialane@gmail.com and we’ll get your bag on the way.

We have friends visiting this week and I still need to get the pantry redo post written up.  Also, the chandelier I ordered only arrived tonight and I need to install that before the final reveal, because what is a pantry without a chandelier, I ask you?  Still, I can tell you that I LOVE how it’s turned out.  Here’s a nasty “before” picture so you can see what I had to deal with–lots of space but white wire shelving (which I am allergic to), and a big fat mess of my own making.

Yep.  Pretty bad.  I just love showing you my “before” pictures; it’s like showing you how I look in my sweatpants without makeup!  Plus, it makes my OCD flare up in a bad way.  Well, here’s an “after” shot just to get your attention:

Ah, much better!

In the meantime, here’s my old pantry in North Carolina (if you’re not sick of it yet), so you can see what I did with a much smaller space.  Hang in there with me for a few more days and I’ll have it up soon.  Meanwhile, thanks for stopping by!

Soy Marinated Skirt Steak with Sugar Snap Peas and Asparagus Stir Fry

Click on the "In the Kitchen with 11 Magnolia Lane" Button to read about our new series

For the Marinade:

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon minced green onion
  • Handful of coarsely chopped cilantro
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1 (1.5- 2 lb) beef skirt or flank steak

A simple soy marinade makes this skirt steak extra tasty

Grilling Instructions:

I marinated the skirt steak overnight and the flavor was wonderful.  If you didn’t plan ahead or you just don’t have that kind of time, I would let it soak for at least 3 hours prior to grilling.

Directions:

  1. Preheat your grill to medium low.
  2. Cook steak for approx. 6-8 minutes per side.
  3. Remove steak from grill and let it sit under a tent of foil for at least 5 minutes.

Grill approx. 6 minutes until steak is nicely browned

Slice against the grain of the meat

Sugar Snap Peas and Asparagus Stir Fry adapted from Everyday Food

This very quick and easy stir fry is an excellent side dish for the Ginger Soy Skirt Steak.

Ingredients:

  • 8 ounces sugar snap peas
  • 1 bunch asparagus, cut into 2 inch pieces
  • 4 cloves of garlic, sliced thin
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons rice wine vinegar

Directions:

  1. Combine snap peas, asparagus, red pepper flakes, garlic and water in a skillet.  Cook, tossing until veggies are crisp-tender (Approx. 3-5 minutes)
  2. Add soy and vinegar, toss, and cook a few additional minutes until well combined.
  3. Serve with skirt steak and enjoy!!!

Enjoy!
