Pretending to be Supermodels…

Have you noticed our new look? Thanks to some amazing photography of the three of us by Jessica Oatman, we have a new Blog header and have freshened up our “About Us” page.

We had such a great time working with Jessica. She really listened to our ideas, and spent time talking about what we hoped for and looking at the inspiration shots we had gathered. OK, actually Terry was the Creative Director on our end, Christy and I just stood where we were told, and smiled through the cold!

Our goal was to get some fun shots that captured our personalities, that would feel fresh and would work within the space limitations of our blog pages.

Our inspiration for a large part of our shoot was the Mad Men era, in fact Christy and Terry both were able to wear vintage dresses (Christy from her mother and Terry from her Grandmother). These were the most fun shots to do.

We also took some dressed up shots as all three of us love any reason to get all ‘glammed up’.

Finally, we did a whole mess of outside casual shots and individual headshots.

And we did all this in a 2 hour window—including wardrobe/hair/jewelry changes. Unfortunately, the hotel where we stayed and held the shoot at was not very accommodating of extending our check-out time, and so we had to rush through much of the pictures to wrap up and race out of there by noon. Jessica was super-efficient and had some great suggestions for what have become some of our favorite pictures.

And, did we mention it was freezing with rain threatening that day? I don’t know how supermodels do it!

Thanks Jessica, we look forward to working with you again! You can read more about Jessica (her story is incredible) on her Blog here.

Easy, Knock-off Monogrammed Frames

I have always loved these frames by Marye Kelley. This one was a special gift and it matches the décor in my house perfectly.

Recently I was organizing my office and I found these craft frames I had tucked away. I knew I could very easily make some more frames similar to the pricier Marye Kelley frames.

The supplies you need to make these frames are:

Plain wood frame

Scrapbook paper

Exacto knife & cutting mat

Craft paint in a coordinating color to your paper (or gold/silver if you prefer)

Embellishment (sticker letter, vinyl monogram) or you can just print a monogram directly on the paper first.

Double-sided tape (optional)

Mod-podge

I started with this (above) wood frame from Michael’s.

I first painted a thin coat of a coordinating color around the edge of the frame and the window of the picture part. This paint will show outside the paper once it’s taped on and give the paper a nice, pretty edge.

Then I cut the frame for the window out of the scrapbook paper. This is the hardest part. I find the easiest way is to trace the inside of the frame on the back and then cut just inside it. Cutting the round corners takes some patience, but they don’t have to be perfect. *Be careful to make sure your monogram (if you have pre-printed one) is placed where you want it on the frame before you trace so everything lines up perfectly once its done.

I love the large 12×12 frames but my printer won’t print on paper that wide so it creates a challenge if I want to add a monogram.  I considered making a custom monogram using a vinyl cutter (like a Cri-cut or a Silhouette) to cut the letters, but for this pink frame I went the easy way and just punched out a circle from pink cardstock. Then I added a white “S” sticker for my daughter’s name. For the smaller beige damask frame, I was able to print a monogram in dark brown on the scrapbook paper first.

To do this, I designed the monogram on my computer first. (I use Adobe  InDesign but there are many design programs available)

Then I printed it using my regular printer, printing directly on scrapbook paper cut down to 8.5 x 11 to work in my printer.

When the paint on the frame is dry, I taped the scrapbook paper to the frame first with double-sided tape. I am fortunate to have a double-sided tapegun I use my paper/invitation business, but you can use regular double-sided tape, or even glue or modge-podge if you prefer.

Once the paper is on just where you want it. Adhere your embellishment with glue or more tape, then you modge podge over the whole thing. A thin coat should be all you need. Once it dries, insert your picture and you are all set.

With so many scrapbook papers to pick from, the possibilities for these frames are endless. I think this would make a cute personalized mother’s day or graduation gift, wouldn’t it?

This frame has a picture of my daughter last Easter. Notice her basket and her precious sailor dress? I have to capture the fancy “dress-up” moments while I can. The pout with the fairy costume (below) is really more typical.

April Showers Bring May Flowers: My Front Door Easter Makeover

I am so excited to see all the spring flowers in full bloom and our cherry tree blossoming.  Spring is here and the Easter Bunny is on its way (at least that is what my kids keep telling me).  I wanted to update my outdoor Easter decor this year and create a festive spring welcome for all our guests, especially the Easter Bunny :) .

Over the past few years I have started to repeat my holiday decorations.  Maybe due to time, or simply budget constraints but my Easter decor left a lot to be desired.  I decided to take a bit more time and plan out my Spring/Easter decor that could last a few years without boring me.

I knew I wanted to incorporate both spring and Easter and love the rhyme “Spring showers bring May flowers” so when I spotted this adorable pink ruffle umbrella at JoAnne Fabrics for 60% off,  I had to have it.  I thought it would look amazing filled with some spring flowers although I have to admit, I normally would not have chosen pink!    Not only did I pick a pink umbrella, but I also bought artificial pink tulips at Walmart.  That umbrella is over loaded with pink but I LOVE it!!!

I tied it all together with a sage green tulle bow (left over from our Black, White and Green baby shower).    I have to say, I am loving the pink, especially against the black door.  It is festive, different than what I would normally do and it really captures the season perfectly.

Now onto my two black urns that sit on my front steps.

I normally fill my two large black urns with flowers but as I said, my front door really needed a spring makeover and the urns are too pretty not to utilize.   So off I went to HomeGoods for some Easter inspiration and hopefully a sale item or two. I guess I started too late this season since there was very little left.

Luckily, I found these two rabbits that I guess were once a part of a topiary set.  At the end of the day I got a great deal but needed to get creative to make them work.

"Mr." Easter Bunny

"Mrs." Easter Bunny

I covered each urn with moss and placed multi-colored speckled eggs around the base.  I actually used long toothpicks to hold the moss and eggs in place.  Then I placed each bunny on a long wooden dowel and created my own topiaries.   One of the bunnies came with a wreath around “his” neck which I just loved.  Since I didn’t have the materials to match the wreath, I decide to create a “her” bunny by using some of the left over green tulle and a pink tulip.  I am loving my new and improved “his” and “her” Easter bunny topiaries.

Happy Spring and Happy Easter!

Mailbox Redo–Perennials & Jasmine on a Rustic Grapevine Trellis

We’ve had a nice long stretch of warm weather here in Nashville, and it’s gotten me motivated to clean the leaves and cobwebs off the front porch and get to work digging in the yard. Yes, we might still have one last cold snap, but it’s hard to resist heading outside after months of gray and cold!

My mailbox area has needed something to jazz it up ever since we moved in last summer. I did my usual and planted white petunias, but those didn’t make it much past October, between the heat and the fact that they’re, well, annuals. I hung two grapevine wreaths on either side to decorate for fall, but this spring, I wanted to add some perennials to the mix.

Fall decor on the mailbox

I love the look of climbing vines that grow over a front porch. Here’s a picture of one of the houses we *almost* bought, and I loved that she was training a vine around the porch already.

Sorry--had to crop this picture so our realtor wasn't in it. :)

Since I’m not sure we’ll be here long enough to achieve that goal on my current front porch, I decided to use a climber on the mailbox as my primary perennial. I’ll train it and trim it so it doesn’t completely take over the mailbox as it grows. Jasmine won, hands down, since it grows like a weed and smells divine.

I decided to use one of my all-time favorites for the trellis—grapevine. In fact, I used one of the wreaths I had flanking the mailbox last autumn (the other one is on my front door now with a burlap bow on it, here). Grapevine can be a pain in the rear to work with and you do have to be patient as you train it to just the right shape, but it’s a gorgeous, natural, and inexpensive way to add texture.

Here’s what I started with: one wreath, my staple gun and staples, and florists’ wire (I only wound up using one piece of this). You could also buy long zip ties and use those; black ones would have blended in perfectly with the base of my mailbox and obviously you’d want to go this route if you have a metal base to your mailbox instead of a wood one.

I pulled the wreath apart and spread out the vines a bit so they weren’t all bunched together. When you look at the wreath, you’ll see that they use one thick vine to wrap around the outside to hold everything together. Just cut this thick vine and unwind it, and the whole thing will come apart.

**Warning—this is incredibly messy. If you’re intending to use your grapevine inside, you might want to take it apart outside so you have less vacuuming to do at the end of your project.**

Then I spent about ten minutes just playing with the vine, twisting it around the mailbox and stapling it in place once I got it where I wanted it. My friend, Andrea (see the grapevine and twinkle lights she uses inside her house HERE), will sometimes soak hers in water before she works with it to make the vines more flexible. I am too impatient and usually don’t bother. Here’s what I came up with:

I then planted four pots of white candytuft–also a perennial–and a $10 pot of jasmine. Jasmine grows so quickly that I didn’t think I needed to buy a larger and more expensive plant. I trained the stems around the grapevine on the left side of the mailbox, and will continue to do that every few days as the vine grows.  I also put in some white petunias and mulched.  Here’s the finished product:

Grapevine wreaths go on sale at the craft stores pretty frequently, or you can always use your coupon. When we lived in Virginia Beach four years ago, I used about 20 wreaths and zip ties to decorate a metal gazebo trellis at our rental house. The canvas had rotted and molded, but the ugly frame was still there bolted to the end of our dock, so I grapevined the whole darned thing. I don’t have any pictures as that was before the blog started, but it was a great way to dress up an eyesore.

You can also use grapevine on your mantel, around your pillars (inside or outside), on top of your kitchen cabinets, or even just to decorate an empty wall. You can buy clear lights on brown wire and they blend right in…I’m considering doing grapevine with lights on my screened porch this spring. And, of course, it would make a great trellis if you’re luckily enough to be training a vine over your front porch!

Sneak a Peek at the Spring Menu: Fish Cakes with Remoulade Sauce and Romaine and Carrot Shredded Slaw

Lemon Fish Cakes with Remoulade

As you all know the Spring Menu/Meal Plan is almost ready to be revealed and I have been testing the recipes and enjoying every bite.  This particular recipe may be a family staple as it is light, crispy and wonderful for spring and summer.  The remoulade sauce is a favorite and goes with just about any seafood but I also love it on burgers and sandwiches (with or with out the bread).  This meal has lots of vinegar and the fresh herbs which makes it vibrant, fresh and perfect for spring…ENJOY!!

Lemon Fish Cakes: (Adapted from Everyday Food Light)

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoon olive oil
  • 6 tilapia fillets
  • salt & pepper
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup Helmans mayo
  • 1/2 cup parsley
  • 1/2 cup dill
  • 2 lemons, zested and juiced
  • 3 tbsp prepared horseradish
  • 1 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.  Line a baking sheet with foil and spray with cooking spray or use 1 1/2 teaspoons of olive oil to coat.  Place tilapia fillets on pan, season with salt and pepper and bake for approx. 8 – 10 minutes.  Let fish cool, then flake with a fork.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the eggs, mayo, parsley, dill, lemon juice/zest and horseradish.  Fold in the fish and add in 1/2 cup bread crumbs.  (Paleo/no carb folks can substitute nuts or even coconut would be tasty).  Mix with everything together with your hands and form 1/4 cup sized patties
  3. Dredge each patty in the remaining panko crumbs, pressing down to adhere.
  4. Heat a large skillet on medium high with the remaining olive oil.  Place the fish cakes in the hot skillet and cook on each side until golden brown (4-6 minutes per side).  Serve with remoulade and slaw.

Cook the fish cakes until golden brown

  • 1 tsp mustard (ground or Dijon)
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar or champagne vinegar
  • salt/pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh dill
  • Few sprigs of fresh parsley

Directions

  1. Place all ingredients in the food process and pulse several times until all is incorporated.  Do not over mix- you want this to be the consistency of slightly thinned mayonnaise.

Romaine and Carrot Shredded Slaw

Ingrediants:

  • 1 head romaine lettuce, shredded finely
  • 4 carrots, shredded in cheese grater
  • 1/2 cup fresh dill
  • 1/4 fresh parsley
  • 1/4 cup orange juice
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp red-wine vinegar

Homemade Sharp Mustard~The Perfect Easter Hostess Gift & Free Printable Labels

Seriously–doesn’t pretty much everyone eat ham on Easter Sunday?  And whether you’re hosting a crowd at your home, or perhaps planning to enjoy the day with friends and family, this mustard recipe is the perfect complement to your Easter ham.

Courtesy of my dear Aunt Diane, who is a fabulous cook, it’s a staple in my refrigerator at all times, and best of all, it makes enough that you’ll have some to keep, and some to share.

This is a great recipe—as stated in the title, this mustard is *sharp* and almost has a horseradish bite to it, which comes from the mustard and vinegar.  Yum!

Aunt Diane’s Sharp Mustard

3.5 oz. dry mustard (usually 2 jars/bottles)
1 c. apple cider vinegar
1 egg
1 c. sugar
½ t. salt
1 ½ c. mayonnaise

Combine the dry mustard and vinegar in a bowl and let stand for 8-12 hours (I’ll usually do this before I go to bed).  Beat the egg (I do this in a medium saucepan off heat so I make fewer dirty dishes), and then add the sugar, salt, and mustard/vinegar mixture.  Cook over medium heat until thickened.  Cool and then stir in the mayonnaise.  Pour into jars and keep refrigerated.  **I use Ball’s half pint, large mouth jars for this recipe; it will fill about 4 of them.**

Here are some gorgeous black and green  labels that Amy whipped up for us (thank you, Amy).  You can print these out on sticker or full-sheet label paper and stick them on the top of the jar, or try printing them on cardstock and tie them around the jar with a little raffia or decorative ribbon—I think they’d look great either way, and they’ll definitely dress up your mustard to make this the perfect Easter hostess gift.  I always have a few jars of this mustard ready-to-gift in my fridge; it’s a nice change to the typical bottle of wine or flowers that we usually take our hostesses.

Now that Google Friend Connect has gone away, please take a minute to follow us through Linky Followers (on the right).  Enjoy the mustard, and thanks for stopping by!

Easter Mantel Decor

Easter is right around the corner and everyone in my house is very excited. My 3-year old daughter asks me every day “Is the Easter Bunny is coming TODAY?! “

Easter is among my favorite holidays. I love the pastel decor, the celebration of resurrection and new life and the fresh, easter dresses (!) and the happy, “spring” feeling that comes at this time of year.

I don’t usually do much to my mantel, and having a new house it took a bit of thought to decide how to decorate my new (very white) mantel/fireplace. My house was painted all white (as you have seen in my kitchen HERE and my daughter’s room HERE) so I decorate with neutrals and texture to make it more interesting. Light blue is my favorite color,  so going that route was kind of an easy choice.

I made the EASTER sign out of a wooden plaque from Michael’s and traced some letters, then painted them. My daughter and I painted some kraft paper eggs light blue together, and Christy sent me the light blue cut-out of a bunny which I backed with scrapbook paper and framed.

This little green guy came from Pier One. Don’t they have the best Easter decorations every year?

I hope its feeling very spring-like where you are, I am SO happy it is starting to warm up here.

Here is a link to our Spring Giveaway for a cute monogrammed Burlap Tote!

And, did you see our new header? Yes, that’s us Magnolia Lane girls! Its a preview from our recent photo session with Jessica Oatman, we can’t wait to reveal our whole new look very soon.

Yummy Easter Treat–Pretzel Kisses

I wanted to share one of my favorite go-to recipes when I need a fast and easy treat.  If you’re on the hook to provide something sweet at an upcoming Easter party, then this is a great one to try.  Apologies to Terry, though, because just like Amy’s cupcake post, this totally blows her healthy, low-carb eating plan!

I didn’t make this recipe up–it’s been around for ages–and it’s so easy that it barely counts as a recipe.  I made hundreds of these at Christmas and bagged them up to share with neighbors, family, and friends, and they were a hit at my kids’ homeschool tutorial program.  Let’s begin, OK?

Assemble your ingredients:

Yep, that’s all there is:  mini pretzels, chocolate kisses (I use Hershey’s–is there any other kind?) and M&Ms.  The lovely folks at M&Ms make their chocolates in colors that suit practically every holiday on the calendar, so you can make these for every season of the year, or according to your child’s favorite color.  I’ve made pink ones for my daughter’s birthday more than once.  Guess it’ll be aqua ones this year since she’s turned her back on pink.

I like to put a small square of parchment paper on a microwave-safe plate to make transferring the finished product easier.  Then, simply unwrap a kiss and put it on top of a mini pretzel.  I melt them in the microwave, although you can certainly do them in the real oven if you prefer.  In my microwave, it takes 3 minutes at 50% power for the kisses to get soft enough that the M&M smooshes them down (sorry about the really technical cooking term there), but if you try to put the first M&M on and the kisses are still slightly hard, then give them another 30 seconds at 50% power.

Ready to go into the microwave

Once the kisses are soft, just press a single M&M onto the top of each kiss.  They’ll look like this:

They are totally delicious at this point, with the kisses all warm and melted, and I lose a bunch of them to the kids if they’re hovering nearby.  The ones that survive get slid onto a cookie sheet and put in the fridge (or more frequently during the winter, out on the screened porch) to firm up and cool down.

I usually get an assembly line going on and while one plate is in the microwave, I’m peeling kisses and getting the next batch ready.  I also enjoy violating child labor laws and making my kids unpeel the kisses (yes–without paying them–I’m mean like that).  Even the Bible says that if you won’t work, you don’t eat!

These are also fabulous with a dark chocolate M&Ms and kisses, but regardless of how you mix and match with this recipe, it’s a great sweet and savory treat.  Whip up a few for the Easter bunny!
