A Season of Giving; 24 days of Acts of Kindness

Over the past few years Christmas has taken on a life of it’s own in our home.  I’ve have to admit that I have gotten caught up in all the hustle and bustle of the holiday that I find myself extremely stressed out by mid- December.  I am not sure if the stress comes from all the buying, spending, baking, decorating, mailing or all the above.  I do know that I have gotten to a point where I need a change.  I want the magic of Christmas back and I want to share that magic with my children.  I want them to know that there is more to the holiday season than presents under the tree and I want them to experience the power of giving.   I have LOST the true meaning of Christmas but I think I found my solution and I am excited to share it with all of you.

In the spirit of the season, the girls as 11 Magnolia Lane want to give back.  From December 1st-24th, we will be sharing our “Acts of Kindness” advent activities.  Our goal is find and share the true meaning of the holiday season with our friends, family and followers.  We also want to get our children involved and teach them that it feels just as good, if not better, to give rather than receive.

I believe that we all can spread a bit more kindness this holiday season.  It doesn’t have to be an expensive act; it just has to be kind.  I am listing out a few of our ideas and I would love your feedback and suggestions and most of all your participation.  We are hoping to make this a holiday tradition so please feel free to share your “Acts of Kindness” in the comment section below.  {We even hope to have a link party as the season draws to a close with other Blogs embracing this spirit!} Can you just imagine the true holiday spirit that would happen if just a small portion of the Blog world made random acts of kindness a part of their holiday celebration?

I hope together we can bring back the magic of the holiday season and remember; there are no acts too small, just be sure to be kind.

EXAMPLE Acts of Kindness:

December 1st: Donate Hats and Mittens to a local church collecting them for children in need in our county

December 2nd: Pick up litter & trash around our neighborhood (I plan to get the kids involved on this adventure)

December 3rd: Make Dinner for my neighbor who is a single working mother of two beautiful girls.

December 4th: Organize a neighborhood winter coat drive

December 5th: Send a holiday care package to a Service Man/Woman fighting for our country and freedom

**More Acts of Kindness to follow, these are just to help you (and me) get started**

Making Christmas Meaningful.

Lydia

Today Lydia of Bless This Mess Organizing is joining us today here at 11 Magnolia Lane to share some ideas about keeping the real meaning in Christmas.

I know I struggle with this as much as anyone else, and I (along with my co-bloggers, Christy & Terry) have made a commitment to do better this year.

Hello Magnolia Lane Readers!

Are you looking for ways to keep Christ in Christmas? It can be hard these days to compete with all the cool electronics that are are on the top of so many kids wishlists. I think the true meaning of Christmas has been lost over the years but there are numerous ways to put the focus back on baby Jesus and less on the presents. Here are some ideas I wanted to share with you:

~ Have a basket for Christmas cards on your kitchen table.  In the evening during dinner, pick one of the cards and pray for that family.  Pray that their Christmas would be filled with blessings and thank God for their friendship.

{Casa Cullen}

~  Light a candle at the table and have each family member talk about how God has answered their prayers. Give Him all the glory!

{via pinterest}

~  Have a “Happy Memories” jar. Have everyone write one each day. Store it for next year and read them next Christmas.

{via pinterest}

~  Using construction paper, trace your child’s hand and make a gift tag out of them. Write “To:” and “From:” and other little messages such as “Merry Christmas”. Use red and green paper. I used contact paper to make them more durable. What better way to give a gift than with homemade love? And it only takes a few minutes!

{Primamomma}

~  Serve hot chocolate with a candy cane for stirring. Explain that the cane reminds us of the shepherds who first heard the news of baby Jesus. The white represents Jesus and purity; the red, His blood shed for us. Turn it upside down and it is a J for Jesus!

{via Pinterest}

Thank you for allowing me to share with you today, I hope you have a very Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year!

Lydia, thank you so much!  I love all those ideas, they will make wonderful traditions and memories for my children. This post is so appropriate as tomorrow we will launch our 24 Days of Giving series. We are hoping to start with small ways to magnify the spirit of the holidays, teach our children how much kindness matters and maybe make a small difference in someone’s day. Please join us tomorrow as we kick off this special series!

Letters to Santa

My kids have already written (and rewritten) their Christmas lists, but this weekend I will make them sit down and write their official “letter” to Santa Claus. This is a great tradition in our house, as my husband won’t stand for the standard “list” of toy requests, but instead expects a full recap of their behavior written for the year first. These make treasured collectibles, we have some pretty funny letters in our collection–we make a copy, of course, before they are posted to the North Pole!

So, this year I made up a cute letter to use. It would have been great to have done this years ago but we’ll start now. Please feel free to download and use for yourself, and your kids.

Just click below to download this letter to print!

A Natural Thanksgiving Tablescape–Pine Cones, Berries, and Dried Flowers

We’re hosting Thanksgiving here in Nashville this year, so I needed to come up with a quick (and informal) table before the family arrives.  My goal was to use what I have rather than buying new.  With the exception of the champagne-colored chargers (a cross between gold and silver, and therefore more versatile, IMO), I succeeded.

My best helper was in charge of making the place cards.

I didn’t use my formal china this year–just my everyday white!  I did use the good silver, the “everyday” crystal, depression glass for bread plates, salt cellars (my kids love those tiny spoons), and apothecary style spice jars for individual vases.  My decorations are all natural–pine cones, osage apples, spanish moss, berries, d’Anjou pears, and dried hydrangeas.  I gathered most of them out back, although I will admit that I carry my favorite huge pine cones around with me when we move (the movers were convinced I was crazy!).  I apologize for the pictures–we’ve had nothing but rain the last few days and there’s NO natural light to speak of.

Dried hydrangea centerpiece with scattered pinecones.

I used canvas painter’s dropcloths as tablecloths for the table and the buffet, and tied the sides up with jute twine.  My table’s extended to 12′ right now and I realized that I can’t find my super-long tablecloth–but this worked great with the color scheme, anyway.

The buffet will be a resting place for food on Turkey Day, but for now it’s holding random items.

FYI, the “B” pumpkin was on sale for 80% off at Hobby Lobby this past week, making it $5.  Score!  The “Thankful” subway art can be printed at Over the Big Moon here, and there’s a darling banner that you can print out, too (mine’s hanging above the buffet).

We’re going to enjoy a piano concert during our dessert.

More hedge apples (osage apples) from my backyard–I am obsessed!

The head of the table–see the gobble, gobble on the place card?!

Sorry about the glare from the chandy in this last picture…one day when I share the dining room I’ll have to show you the hideous fixture that was up there before I scored this Ballard Designs Grande Claire off Craigslist for $100.

All it needs now is the turkey!

We are so very thankful to God for all of His tremendous blessings.  Have a very Happy Thanksgiving with your families!

Merry Christmas!! Red and Green Polka Dot Pillows GIVEAWAY

Won’t your porch look beautiful sporting these festive pillows?

I recently showed off my front porch, decorated for fall.  I received several inquiries about my outdoor pillows, and after sharing one of my favorite Ebay sources, I figured I’d touch base with her and see if she wanted us to host a giveaway.  She graciously agreed! Courtesy of Susan at Pillows-Pet Beds-and-More, the winner of the giveaway will get this set of four trendy lumbar pillows–two solid red, two green and white polka dot–to decorate her home for Christmas.  Can’t you think of at least a dozen places you could use these? I have about ten of these pillows in different colors, all purchased from Susan, and they are awesome!  I just change out the colors based on the season or the holiday.  They are reasonably priced, even with shipping, and they’re made (in the USA!) from thick, durable, indoor-outdoor poly fabric.  I use them inside and outside,  and when I use them outside, I can attest to the fact that they do not fade in the sun, nor do they get mildewed when they get left out in the rain.  Just think of the possibilities with this set–use all four together for Christmas, the green ones for spring, the red ones for Valentine’s Day, 4th of July, Memorial Day, etc.  Lots of decorating options! To enter, you need to 1) become a follower of 11 Magnolia Lane (over on the right) or tell us you already are,  2) leave me a comment at the end of this post telling me where you’d put your awesome cushions.  One entry per person, please, and no entries after noon central time on Sunday, 11/27.  The winner will be selected at random and announced on Sunday night, and Susan will mail you your pillows just in time for you to decorate for the holidays! Take a look at some of the other pillow combos Susan’s got in her Ebay store:

Aren't these great fall colors?

LOVE these--and the damask will go with anything, just like the polka dot ones that I have.

Lumbar pillows are versatile, plus these are so stinkin' cute!

I can’t wait to see your porch with your new pillows jazzing it up!

Four lumbar pillows from Pillows-Pet Beds-and-More!!

Thanks for stopping by.

Thanksgiving Table & Give Thanks Printable

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and usually by now I would be selecting recipes and making shopping lists but this year, I am getting off easy. No, I am not going elsewhere just having a smaller celebration then usual, and keeping it simple. But, Christy has a big celebration going in Tennessee this year so I can’t wait to see what she does.

Since I am not doing the whole “do” this year, I thought I would re-post my table from last year. You can read that post HERE. Our blog was young then so most reader’s probably haven’t seen it. {Chris Neese from Celebration’s at Home actually featured my tablescape on her Facebook page on Thanksgiving, so nice of her!} And, I added a few more pictures to the mix here for those who have seen it.

I made the place cards and the “give thanks” cards to decorate the placesettings by printing on craft paper and then writing over it with a colored sharpie. I am attaching the “Give Thanks” cards as a printable at the end if you would like to make them for yourself.

Hydrangeas from my garden, I love that color they get in the fall.

Look familiar? This candleabra is always in use at one of my parties, somehow or another!

A printable sign I made, printed on Ivory cardstock then backed with brown paper and framed.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Here are the “Give Thanks” cards table cards I added to the center of each placesetting. Simply print them out and use them as is, or if you use a darker paper you can write over the “Thanks” in the color you prefer.  You could also have guests write on these what they are thankful for, or make a “Thankful” Tree out of them…the ideas are endless!

Enjoy your holiday, and be sure to click to enter our giveaway for a set of green & red polkadot holiday pillows.  Aren’t they are awesome?  (GIVEAWAY CLOSED)

Win these Four lumbar pillows from Pillows-Pet Beds-and-More!!

Dressing Up the Screened Porch for Fall

I posted the other day with photos of my front porch, so of course I couldn’t leave the screened porch out.  I grew up with a screened porch, and we ate dinner out there almost every night when the weather permitted.  I also spent many an hour curled up out there with a good book.  Small wonder that a screened porch has always been at the top of my “wish list” whenever we’re moving and searching for a new house.

Our North Carolina house, that we left this summer, had an awesome screened porch (I’ll show it to you below, just for fun).  The high ceilings of that era made it feel so airy, and we had a fountain just off in the side yard, so when we sat out there we got to enjoy the sound of running water, too.

This is the view from the kitchen; there are actually two other doors onto this porch, from the front entry hall and the library.

The steps leading up to the formal English garden and the fountain.

I love to include pictures of our old house because that house was pure eye candy, and even though it makes me nostalgic for it, I think all of us house-lovers really enjoy looking at gorgeous old houses.

I’ve mentioned it before, but our current house is about 90 years newer, so it’s completely different.  The screened porch is right off our kitchen and has a great view of the green space (that’s the fancy realtor-name for woods!) which defines our back property line.  There’s a little stream down there, somewhere, and the kids are forever coming in muddy and needing to be checked for ticks because it draws them like a magnet!

The wicker furniture is from K-mart.  I honestly abhor Kmart, but their Martha Stewart outdoor furniture is usually a pretty good deal.  It took me about two hours and a chat with the manager to get this furniture purchased and loaded into my car back when we lived in Virginia, but it was worth the trouble.  The seagrass rug is from Pier 1 and the side tables are actually plant stands from Hobby Lobby.  I just flipped the rug over because there’s a big black spot on it from where my son decided to spray paint his Nerf gun black.  Really, why mess up perfectly good newspaper when you can use an expensive rug as a dropcloth?!

The table and chairs are a must in my opinion, because we also like to eat on the screened porch whenever we can.  In fact, it’s about the only way that my sweet-blooded husband can be outdoors in the spring and summer without getting eaten, and the mosquitoes still sometimes find their way in to him!  The table was a curbside find in our old neighborhood in Virginia Beach.  It was a dark forest green when I found it and I spray painted it white.  The glass table top was intact, which was very lucky–someone’s trash was definitely my treasure!  I looked for the longest time to find chairs that matched and finally found them at the Cameron Antique Show in Cameron, North Carolina.  I recovered the seats with fabric that I already had and I think the table and chairs look like they belong together.

The centerpiece on the table is perfect for fall–hedgeapples from the woods out back and grapevine balls in a bowl that I bought at a yardsale and–you guessed it–spray painted white!  Hedgeapples (aka Osage apples) are supposed to be nature’s DEET and repel bugs and spiders, but we haven’t tested it out on hubby yet.  They do, however, smell great–kind of citrusy.

This isn’t the greatest shot of the chandelier–it really isn’t crooked even though it kind of looks that way in the picture, but I had to show it off.  I scored it on Craigslist for $20.  It was a rusty red color, so I taped everything off and gave it a coat of white paint.  I was tempted to make it a funky bright color, but since we’ll sell or rent this house when we move on in a couple of years, I stuck with a color that would please most everybody.  I had another lighting nightmare, like in my laundry room, when I pulled down the old, rusty ceiling fan, because once again, there was no electrical box in the ceiling.  I figured it out, but it took WAY longer than the 30 minutes I had planned!

I’m on the lookout for a piece to fit in the corner by the sliding door, right under my white “B”.  I’d like something that’s more indoor furniture than out, like an old dresser or some wooden shelves.  Something to watch for at the next flea market!

I used some more hedgeapples and some sprigs of purple berries (also from the back yard) in a basket to bring in some fall decor.

Long matches for the outside firepit and votive candles in mason jars sit on top of the mini-fridge.  The wine bottle filled with twinkle lights was a gift from my neighbor last Christmas–too cute!

As always, I’ve got a couple more things to do out here.  First, in my messy corner (there’s always one in each room–trust me!) I have an old antique hanging basket that I need Chris to hang for me.  I think I’m going to have him put it on the side of the house.  I usually fill it with seasonal flowers, pine cones, grapevine balls, etc.  Also, I am dying to paint or stain black harlequin diamonds on the floor, which is just pressure-treated wood decking.  Not sure if that will happen before the holidays or if it will be a spring project, but I’ll be sure to share it when it does!

Stay tuned; we’re about to do our first giveaway in the next few days!  (Update:  click here for the giveaway that runs 11/21-11/27).

As always, thanks for stopping by, and have a happy fall, y’all!

More Fall Front Porch Decor–Just in Time for Thanksgiving!

I’m really looking forward to Christmas, but I like to give Thanksgiving its due.  That can be hard, sometimes, when the Christmas stuff is in the stores in AUGUST, but I love Thanksgiving, and I think it’s one of our country’s most meaningful holidays.

My Halloween decor isn’t very different from my Thanksgiving decor, because we don’t do the whole cobwebs-and-spiders thing for Halloween.  We do carve pumpkins, and I put out luminarias (just white tealights in Ball mason jars) to line the sidewalk and the steps for the trick-or-treaters, but other than that, things don’t change very much at our house from October 31st to November 1st.  No wonder, then, that I felt the need to jazz things up a bit today.  Here’s how the front porch looks after I tweaked it a bit…

Can’t see anything from this far away?  Don’t worry, the close ups are next!

My seating area is shown below.  I have a glider, two chairs, and a little table.  The glider is from Walmart (about 15 years ago) and the chairs were $5–for both–at a yard sale.  I have to give them a coat of spray paint every spring.  We love to sit on the front porch in the evenings with a glass of wine and watch the kids playing.  My son and his buddies are usually throwing the football in the front yard, though, so one of us might have to jump in as referee.

I change the colored cushions out a couple of times a year.  Obviously, the orange ones are in rotation right now, but the red ones will have their turn beginning the weekend after Thanksgiving.  As we were sitting on the porch on Halloween, passing out candy, my husband asked me why we had so many cushions!  Sometimes I’m not sure that he “gets” my vision!  As an aside, I buy the cushions from a great Ebay seller (click here for a pillow giveaway), and they are pretty reasonably priced, as well as being completely weatherproof.

Below you’ll see my “window to nowhere” on the porch wall, and the hanging candle-lier (is that a word?).  I usually light the candles when we’re sitting on the porch, and they get a color change to match the season, too.  The white ones I had out this summer kept melting and wilting off sideways–we had a HOT summer in Nashville!  The metal “B” is from an online store, and I added vinyl polka dots to match the cushions.

I have two of these pumpkin topiaries flanking either side of the front door.  Usually, I buy the real Cinderella pumpkins and stack those as topiaries, but in this house there’s enough of an overhang that these faux ones won’t get wet.  The black planters are filled with petunias or impatiens all summer

To the left of the front door, I have a basket filled with extra pillows (take that, honey! :) and the watering can.  I’m not watering much of anything right now, so I filled it up with some sprigs from this cool bush with purple berries in our backyard.  We back up to woods, and there’s a lot of interesting greenery back there.

By the way, I think I stole the pillows in the basket idea from Amy’s porch post.  Even though she’s in Virginia and I’m in Tennessee, we decorate our homes in a shockingly similar manner, and if wasn’t for this blog, no one would notice!

I didn’t want to leave the mailbox out of the fun, so I put up a couple of grapevine wreaths and wove some of the unknown purple berry plant into them.  My vinca died last week when we had a hard freeze, so I yanked them out and put a few mini pumpkins in the empty space until I find some pansies.

I think my next post will show the screened porch, but let me leave you with this picture as a sneak peak–I am so pleased with the very cool live decor I’m finding right in my own backyard!

Can you even believe those hedgeapples (aka osage oranges)?  I just love them–and they smell so good!

Happy Fall, Y’all!  Thanks for stopping by.
