Planning a Dinner Party {& Printable}

The Party Dress

I love to plan parties. Anyone who knows me knows that. In fact, I enjoy the planning, staging and getting ready for the party as much as actually being at one. { So, its probably no surprise that a portion of my business revolves around event design?}

So, my parties have fallen off a bit in recent years…with children, work and other issues I haven’t done nearly the entertaining I used to. I decided this week I was going to change that. And, so I am planning a “Dinner Party” this weekend with some of our closest friends.

While our time with our friends here in this area is short (as we are moving, I may have mentioned it about 100 times?) and so I want to savor what time we have left here with them. And, OK, my two boys are going on a trip with their Grandparents this weekend so with only one child to worry about (how easy is that?) its the perfect time to have some “quality” adult time. I also admit to being  inspired by this post at  At The Picket Fence that Heather wrote about the TV show Thirty Something.

In describing the premise of the “30-Somethings” on the show she wrote..

“You know cool people.
Hip people.
Grown ups with complex lives and secret relationships.
People who have cocktail parties and couple’s dinners where they all sit around for hours and laugh and talk over their wine glasses.”

Photo AMC

So right then and there I decided it was time to get us all together and have a dinner where we could all sit around for hours and laugh and talk over {our} wineglasses.
So, the party is about 48 hours away, and I have yet to figure out much of what I am doing. I typically plan everything I can out ahead of time. I am too busy to make multiple trips to the store, and I have learned that if I organize I can enjoy the event more. I also promised myself my husband I was going to keep it as simple as possible and not get stressed out.
Since I still need to plan, I made up a little printable to help organize this party, and really any party. I usually jot everything down in a journal type notebook but this sheet will keep everything on one page, including a shopping list. Feel free to download it to use {PLEASE become a Follower if you do, we like to know who is enjoying our stuff! } Also, feel free to leave in the comments section any suggestions that would be helpful and I can modify this form.

Party Plan Printable

So, I am off to work on my “spring” tablescape and double check my recipes so I can finish my shopping list. But, check back Monday– I will be sure to post about the night. I am sure it will be a fun evening!
{Note: just in case a “dinner party” sounds really boring to everyone who is not yet “30-something” I  am very lucky that my husband did some bartending in his past and therefore things don’t usually stay boring at our parties for long!} LINKING UP AT:

Star Struck in Warrenton, VA

Mr. Clint Eastwood

My little town of Warrenton, VA had a huge celebrity sighting today. Clint Eastwood, (Yes, Dirty Harry baby!!) director and co-producer of “J. Edgar” the movie was filming a scene on the steps of our old court house today. Big news travels fast, especially in a small town, so the streets were filled with adoring fans and some wanna-be paparazzi (that would be me, Tehehe).

Although Mr. Eastwood was the only shinning “star” in our little town today, Leo DiCaprio is set to portray J. Edgar Hoover in the movie.  A great deal of controversy surrounds the life of the FBI’s first director J. Edgar.   Hoover spent 48 years creating and instituting many of the crime fighting techniques we still use today. Unfortunately, he was also accused of abusing his power and his personal life was filled with rumors of closeted cross-dressing and homosexuality.  I am a huge fan of both Leo and Clint, I know they will make “J. Edgar” a movie we all will want to watch.

Here are some of my paparazzi shots of Clint turning my little town of Warrenton into “tinsel town” for a day.

Wardrobe Please!!!

Teresa's flower shop's window was completely "re-decorated" by set designers.

The Court House (and Clint)

It's all about the details

"And that's a wrap"... Clint being "rushed" out of Warrenton.

Back from Hibernation

Hi all, I am back from my winter hibernation. After some much needed R & R, the warmer weather has definitely gotten me motivate to begin some spring cleaning, yard work and of course decorating.  I promise to share all my fresh spring projects here at 11 Magnolia Lane.

As you know I started working on my boys bathroom last month and I am thrilled to share….it is finally complete (well almost:)
I still need to frost their medicine cabinet mirror and possibly hang a new light fixture.   I couldn’t wait a day longer so I wanted to share my “almost complete” boys nautical bathroom.

These adorable metal stars came from my sister-in-law Holly.  They were the perfect accent for that navy blue wall.

The boy’s grandfather is a ferry boat captain in Hilton Head, S.C.  It really makes their room extra special and very nautical.

I love this basket from Home Goods!!

I trimmed out the mirror with white molding- it made a huge difference.  You can see the before shot on my Nautical Valance post.

Happy sailing!

Spring Wedding Invitations

For my “day” job, I own my own graphic design business, which since the birth of my daughter 2 years ago, I have focused on “lighter” work such as wedding invitations and Christmas cards. I am fortunate enough to be a designer for Envelopments and have all the gorgeous papers and tools they offer at my disposal. Since spring is wedding season, and I have been working hard to get everything done for my lovely brides. I recently finished up this beautiful set of invitations for a bride who is also a good family friend, named Brandy.

Brandy is planning an evening beach wedding in May and wanted to use the elements of the sea, sand and starfish to reflect this in her invitations. My favorite size to use right now is the 7×7 square invitation because its so unexpected. We used a “caspian” paper (a gorgeous sparkly blue/green color) as a base for the envelopes and accent cards (the RSVP, Hotel, etc.). Her white invitation was backed on to a light blue 7×7 card, with a thin bit of a champagne-colored card showing which was layered in between. We used light blue thermography (raised) printing which was gorgeous on the white card. All in all, the entire suite turned out lovely and I know its going to be a gorgeous wedding!

(Note: this paper is gorgeous in person but impossible to photograph…my apologies!)

My next project is a Tiffany’s inspired wedding, I am very excited to work on those invitations…you could say its right up my alley.

More on my business (which is currently closed to new clients until after my summer move) is available on my website, www.gracepaperie.com.

Organized Jewelry

OK, so this is what the top of my dresser used to look like…my jewelry was always overflowing my jewelry box. I admit I like ‘clunky’ jewelry so it takes up a lot of space!

Inspired by my dear friend Lydia, of BLESS THIS MESS Professional Organizing, I made this Jewelry Organizer after seeing how she organizes her jewelry.

{see pic below}

Lydia's Jewelry Perfectly Organized!

Its VERY easy,  I just took a regular artist’s canvas (available at Michaels, JoAnn’s etc) and covered it with some fabric I had already, just using a staple gun to attach the fabric along the back of the canvas.

Then I attached cabinet knobs–just the kind available at any Home Center– I bought (cheap) plain silver ones. I just drilled in little holes, inserted the screw that came with them, and then screwed them in along the edges of the canvas (obviously, where the wood frame is).

I also added some foam board (what I had lying around, thus the lovely navy blue color) to the back–adhered with glue–so I could also use pins or tacks to hold lighter pieces.

I added some wire to hang it, and here it is complete with my organized jewelry collection!

I love it, it actually makes picking a piece to wear out so much easier!

Bright and Fun (and Incredibly Easy) Springtime Wreath

Bright and fun ribbon wreath--it's that time of year!

It feels like forever since I’ve posted–thanks to the other gals for picking up the slack.  Our house is officially on the market, and I’ve been spending FAR too much time online looking at houses in Tennessee.  If you know the Nashville area, let me know if you prefer Brentwood to Franklin.  We’re torn!

The grass is starting to get green and spring is definitely in the air here, but Easter is so late this year that I didn’t want to put my decorations up until the end of March/beginning of April.  Still, my door needed something cute and fun to get us in the springtime mood.

I’ve seen similar ribbon wreaths in the stores here for over $100 each.  That wasn’t in the budget, and it’s always more fun to make your own.  I apologize that I didn’t take lots of pictures along the way, but trust me when I tell you that you don’t need them!

Here’s what you need:

  • 6-8 rolls of bright ribbon (the more patterns, the better).  Most should be 1-1/2″ width, but I threw in one that was 1″ and one that was 1/2″.  I bought mine at Hobby Lobby during the 50% off week.
  • grapevine wreath–again, from the craft store when they were 50% off.
  • glue gun and glue sticks
  • 4-6 faux Gerber daisies–Michael’s had the best colors and they were $1 each; they even have cute polka dot and zebra striped ones.
  • initial letter (mine is from Hobby Lobby)

All you do is cut lengths of ribbon and tie them on one side of the grapevine wreath . You can use varying lengths, just be sure that your ends are cut on the diagonal to keep them looking nice.  Some of your ribbon might need a bit of glue or fray-check to keep it from unraveling.  In hindsight, I probably would have used wire-edged ribbon so I could have made it stand up more.  The idea is to tie the ribbon on thickly; I used almost all of the ribbon on this wreath.  Keep reading to see what I did with the leftovers!

The letter was white when I bought it, and I put the polka dots on using a Sharpie only because I am all about immediate gratification.  One of our local gift shops sells vinyl polka dots for just a few dollars, and I would use those if I had to do it over again.  However, I ordered a metal curlz letter from a guy online (I’ll tell you who he is later if I wind up liking his work!), and this is a placeholder until it arrives.  Just tie the letter on using a couple of different kinds of ribbon.

Last, when you like how everything else looks, glue gun on several flowers.  Obviously you can play around with the number and colors, but I wanted it BRIGHT and from the street, the brighter the better.  You want this wreath to POP, after all!

Total cost, under $20, although I did spend another $15 for the curlz B that has yet to arrive.  Still WAY better than $100-plus!

Here’s how it looks on my porch.  I already have been working the polka-dot theme with my cushions, as you can see.

Check out that wind today--Old Glory is flying horizontally!

And here’s what I did with the leftover ribbons and flowers:

Tiny little wreath for my daughter's playhouse--how fun!

I already had the little curlz “B” from Hobby Lobby (they’re about a dollar on sale weeks); I just spray painted it purple and made her wreath the exact same way I did mine.  I didn’t have all the colors of ribbon left, but I had enough, and the flowers are bright enough to make up for it.  It’s maybe 10″ in diameter.

Happy Spring!

What’s for Dinner? Healthy & Delicious!

This recipe is SO good, I can’t wait to make it again. I found it in the recent Wegman’s magazine (if you don’t have Wegman’s in your area, its an amazing grocery store, and I am truly sorry you don’t). Each quarter they mail out this wonderful full-color magazine filled with fabulous food ideas, cross-referenced with how to find the ingredients, or even buy it ready-made, in the store. Seriously, people “field trip” to Wegman’s just for the experience, and I am a huge fan.

Since I have recently made a vow to help my family eat better–both healthier (its been a long winter of comfort food) and more carefully (we are seeing great success having undertaken a modified diet for my formerly hyperactive daughter, and I will post on this soon.) this recipe totally fit the bill. And, oh yeah, it has pasta and goat cheese…two of my favorite foods, and power foods like spinach, tomatoes and red pepper.

If all that isn’t enough, its super easy to make and my picky family ate it. Truly its a keeper. Here is the Recipe. {sorry no “Pioneer Woman-esque” Step-By-Step Tutorial…Its really too easy to need it} or here it is direct from Wegman’s.

Baked Pasta with Sweet Pepper, Spinach & Arugula

1 package (16oz) Super Pasta (the healthy kind) Penne, Rotini etc.

8 oz Red/Yellow Pepper Strips (available in Wegman’s from their Olive Bar) NOTE: I actually used jarred Roasted Red Pepper, but next time I would buy Red & Yellow Peppers fresh, chop them up and add them instead, as the jarred peppers have an overpowering flavor.

4 oz Yellow Roasted Tomatoes (again, from the Wegman’s Olive Bar), however fresh chopped up tomatoes would be fine, or jarred/canned, or you can even omit.

1 package or jar Cream Sauce, in this case I used Wegman’s Parmesan Cream sauce, any jarred alfredo (in the healthy eating spirit I recommend a light version) would work fine here.

1/2 t crushed red pepper

1 package spinach/argula (packaged salad greens) Blend NOTE: I used half a bag of fresh spinach, just threw it in (though I might chop it first if you have picky eaters to hide it better) I didn’t use any argula as I forgot to buy it.

3/4 a package goat cheese crumbles (I cut up a log and used the whole thing!)

1 c cold water.

Cook pasta to slightly less then package directions. Rinse in cold water to stop cooking.

Combine pasta, peppers, tomatoes, the red and white sauces, spinach, water and 2/3 of the goat cheese in a very large bowl. Stir well to combine.

Spray a casserole pan w/ nonstick cooking spray, add mixture to pan. Cover with parchment paper directly on the sauce mixture. Then cover with foil.

Bake for 50 minutes, remove foil and paper, sprinkle with remaining goat cheese and return to oven. Cook 20 minutes more, until bubbling at edges.

Enjoy!

Home Tour {Part 1}

I have been working on photographing each room in my house for the purpose of providing photos to our real estate agent for when we put our house on the market in a few weeks, and more importantly, so we can remember this home by. {We are moving b/c of my husband’s job, and its a good thing, but we will miss where we currently live quite a bit, so its bittersweet}. I also want my children to have pictures to remember this house when they began to grow up. Two of them came home from the hospital here so its always going to have special memories for us.

So…here are some of the rooms. I have lots more work to do but here is a quick look at what is “ready” to grace Zillow, MRIS, Realtor.com etc. I know I only look at the houses for sale online with photos…so I figured this was a good way to record my home for posterity and give the Realtor some shots to use.

My two boys share a room, and its never this neat, so I quickly took pictures! (I am going to follow up with a post on this room in the near future.)

Shared Boys Room

Our Family Room…decorating a two story room has some challenges…

Our Master Bath…

My Office…(you can see post on this space HERE)

My daughter’s Room…(you can see the post on this space HERE)

Sloane's Room

So, more pictures to come. And, we are hard at work on a Home Tour of Christy’s Historic Home…Stay Tuned!

(and if you know anyone looking to move to Virginia I know of a great home for sale…(LOL)…)

Ruffled Burlap Table Runner

My kitchen table (that was my grandmothers, which my husband calls the “bomb shelter” due to its weight…{sigh} I totally love it.) has a center opening where the leaves can go in to extend it. Over the last few years, the opening doesn’t close tightly and probably could use some cleaning painting so I have been in need of something to run the length of the table and cover the “crack” up.

This cute little runner that I literally whipped up hardly needs a tutorial, but I will quickly show how I did it just in case anyone is interested. I am hooked completely on burlap these days, and have seen in “blog-land” variations on these with ruffles, and I wanted one. I looked on ETSY, but didn’t want to pay $40 so I figured I could make one pretty easily.

The best part is that while I really don’t like to sew (but am so glad I know how, thanks Mom!) due to my impatient nature, I actually made this on my  grandmother’s vintage sewing machine (hmm…is there is a “grandmother” theme going here?). Trust me, I have been carting this sewing machine around with me for ages and I am always totally shocked that it works perfectly. I usually borrow my Mom’s newer Singer but she’s busy making pillowcase dresses for girls in Haiti (a post on that soon, she’s amazing). However, since she took her sewing machine along with her to Florida for her annual “winter jaunt” so she could keep making the dresses, I broke out my fallback. Its amazing that my Mom’s circa 1970′s machine is just a newer version of my grandmother’s, if anything my grandmother’s is even simpler to use. I checked the instruction manual and the last copyright date is 1941, that’s how old it is. Really, they just don’t make things like they used to!

Anyway, back to the project at hand…So I cut down my burlap to size and just used fray check on one side and used the selvage on the other and then quickly stitched up some ruffles out of white muslin. (To make a ruffle you just make a center seam with a loose stitch, then pull one of the strings gently to gather the fabric).

Then I glued on the Ruffles to the burlap. I would have sewed them, but was afraid how the machine would handle the burlap.

So here is the finished product…super cheap  as I had everything on hand, but it would cost less then $10 to make this, and super easy, less then 30 minutes. A perfect little project.
